‘Twitter the Opera’?!

August 19th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

The Royal Opera House has called on the general public to help them write a opera out of tweets! The public will be donating there ideas and thoughts for the lyrics and story line of this wacky new opera style. It is an experimental opera, which is trying to break down the barrier between the audience and the art form. The show will be held at the Royal Opera House on the 4th-6th September with people twits set to music. See the full BBC video report here. It's an interesting idea but will it work? As Backbytes points out: "Expect the unexpected,"...

Worldwide Photowalk

June 24th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

I recently became aware of the Worldwide Photowalk, it's a brilliant idea - Photowalks are "a social photography event where photographers get together, usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town, to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers" they are free to take part in and open to anyone - although, for practicality all walks are limited to a maximum of 50 people per walk. Q. How many cities and people participated in last year’s Photo Walk? A. We had: 1. 8.324 photographers register for local walks 2. 47 Countries had participating cities 3. 44 States in the...

Cryptozoo: Bringing weird wildlife to the streets

June 16th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Cryptozoo is a "secret world of strange and fast-moving creatures", it is also a social networking and real-world game designed by Jane McGonigal for the American Heart Association. The game is part of an AHA initiative in collaboration with the Institute for the Future to "re-invent physical activity with the help of online games and social media". CryptoZoo is about inventing the future of physical activity, about making play and gaming a bigger part of how we take care of ourselves. CrytpoZoo is a proof-of-concept game, a way for us to show what physical activity could (and we think, should) be like...

Life’s Good – find you’re happiest day with a little help from LG

June 12th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Now, unless you've never seen an advert ever, you're probably familiar with LG’s chipper ‘Life’s Good' outlook. Well, they've decided to spread the good cheer through Facebook and have developed a cool Facebook application using their ‘Life’s Good formula’ that will pinpoint your personal happiest day of the year. Take the test to find out your happy day - curiously mine is exactly a month after my birthday but I guess that kind of makes sense; I've had time for my new age to sink in but the thrill of all my brand new toys/clothes/gift-cards has yet to wear off! - ...

Digg announce ‘Digg Ads’ – giving users a way to feedback

June 4th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Props to Rocio from LG Blog ES for spotting this one: Yesterday Digg announced plans for a new advertising platform — Digg Ads. Digg Ads will give you more control over which advertisements are displayed on Digg. The more an ad is Dugg, the less the advertiser will have to pay. Conversely the more an ad is buried, the more the advertiser is charged, pricing it out of the system. ... The goal here is to give advertisers a way to present content related to their brands and get immediate input on whether it’s relevant to the Digg audience, or not. Here’s...

Akoha – the online game that aims to make real world better

May 29th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Akoha is an rather special online game - it combines social networking, online gaming and real-world activity to help make the world a better place. Players carry out real life and virtual 'missions' such as “Donate an Hour of Your Time” or “Make Someone Smile” to collect points, recruit new players and, as important, spread good deeds and perform little acts of kindness. It's still in Beta, having only launched at the TechCrunch50 conference last September, but it's already seen more than 3,000 mission plays in 37 countries and was selected as a finalist for GamesBeat2009’s Who’s Got Game? start-up competition...

In B flat: Music, web 2.0 style

May 15th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

In Bb 2.0 is a collaborative music/spoken word project which seems to be growing all the time - I first stumbled upon it on Wednesday and in the past day another video has been added to the mix.(Ok, that may not sound like a massive growth but as Darren Solomon, the creator, says: I am being selective, in order to maintain the feel of the project. Many, many thanks to all who have submitted! This is my kinda of web2.0 project - a simple but effective idea put out there for others to bring into being, creative, collaborative and crucially relatively simple...

Belated Ada Lovelace Day

March 25th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

So I'm going with being fashionably late on this one (yes, fashionable, not dreadfully disorganised and forgetful at all!) yesterday was Ada Lovelace Day; an international day of blogging to draw attention to women excelling in technology. The Finding Ada site explains better than I could: Women’s contributions often go unacknowledged, their innovations seldom mentioned, their faces rarely recognised. We want you to tell the world about these unsung heroines. Entrepreneurs, innovators, sysadmins, programmers, designers, games developers, hardware experts, tech journalists, tech consultants. The list of tech-related careers is endless. Recent research by psychologist Penelope Lockwood discovered that women need to see female...

Twitterfall and the rise and rise of Twitter

January 29th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Chris just introduced me to TwitterFall Twitterfall is a way of viewing the latest 'tweets' of upcoming trends on the micro-blogging site Twitter. Updates fall from the top of the page in near-realtime. Unlike other sites, Twitterfall purely does trends (for now). Because of this, we can be efficient - Twitter is queried from the Twitterfall server, and results are pushed to your browser, rather than your browser doing the queries, or your computer polling our server repeatedly. Current trends include Digital Britain and the Superbowl, as well as the option of creating a custom trend, however: These do not use the same method...
