Augmented Reality pt 2: The T-Shirt

March 16th, 2009 by LG Blog UK

Those smart boys over at Squidder are finding some amazing ways of mashing up the real and the virtual.. Not content with creating a barcode T-shirt that projects out the wearer's Twitter feed... PaperTweet3d: Augmented Reality T-shirts from squidder on Vimeo. ...they are now experimenting with a facial recognition-meets-Twitter functionality Facial recognition meets Twitter (kind of) from squidder on Vimeo. Creepy? A little bit. Amazing? Very. The applications for technology like this are vast and exciting, but also intimidating. As Squidder say themselves, ... imagine associating specific faces with twitter (or “face”book… …. sorry) usernames and you’ve suddenly combined the power social networking with video monitoring...

Touch of Class

January 19th, 2009 by LG Blog UK

One of my closest friends studied robotics at university, and ever since he told me that one of their most challenging experiments was to get a robot to successfully butter a slice of bread, (an incredibly complex feat of sensitivity, apparently), I have been fascinated by the subject of robot 'touch'. So it was with great interest that I watched a recent video on National Geographic which showed a Japanese humanoid robot with fingers that can pick up small delicate objects, such as straws, nearly as well as people. Watch the video for...

Music on tap

January 12th, 2009 by LG Blog UK

My recent favourite thing has to be Spotify , an application that allows you streaming access to a stunningly vast music library completely free of charge. To generate revenue the application periodically serves you ads while you're listening. This may sound intrusive but the ads are few and far between and, if they still grate on your nerves, you can buy a premium subscription which removes them altogether. Spotify has all sorts of other features like sharable playlists and themed radio stations all of which work really well. The service is still in beta but I'm really hoping this is one...

2009, already, where’s my Flying Car!?

January 12th, 2009 by LG Blog UK

The title is a quote from my other half, who is just mildly disappointed that technology has failed to live up to the promises Hollywood made in previous decades! However, according to the Sunday Times the Flying Car thing may be able to come to fruition! The first flying automobile, equally at home in the sky or on the road, is scheduled to take to the air next month. If it survives its first test flight, the Terrafugia Transition, which can transform itself from a two-seater road car to a plane in 15 seconds, is expected to land in showrooms in about...

Large Hadron Collider turned on, world still here!

... which was nice. Unfortunately they also made this: Great way to explain the project or painful attempt at engaging the 'yoof'?  I hated the concept but actually didn't mind it so much when I listened to it. I think I may have unintentionally learnt something too... Sly...
