This Season’s Trends
August 24th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
I hope everyone is ready for the return of the tweed, velvet and leather because this month's Vogue has outlined all the up and coming styles:
Velvet will be back with force, every colour, shape and style has been walked down the catwalk; the likes of Stella McCartney and Elie Saab have taken a new approach from the old frumpy eighties velvet, and we see a sophisticated, well shaped cocktail dress theme coming out.
We will be seeing a whole new side to leather, as it looses the biker, boyish image and takes up a new well cut, light-weight feminine image, with...

One of a Kind
February 8th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
On the hunt for lovely and original gifts I stumbled across Shielagh Tacey, an artist and designer living and working in Glasgow, Scotland who makes unique hand woven textile products using a traditional wooden floor loom.
Her products range from cushions to scarves to iPod covers. According to her site everything she produces is a unique, one-off item and she also makes items to customers particular...

We love unique
February 4th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
Way back in March last year, Helen mentioned the webshop Etsy in passing.
I thought I'd draw your attention to it again as it's well worth another visit. A place for artisans to sell their handmade goods, Etsy can consume hours of your time, and huge chunks of your cash if you let it.
Catching my attention this week has been almapottery's barnacle bowls
...bobishi's underwater bangles
..and thecharmlady's green grass rings
So if you're ever stuck for gift idea, never forget Etsy...

Hats off to Sandra Bamminger
February 2nd, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
A link in the most recent Shop Curious newsletter reminded me of Sandra Bamminger, the sculptural* milliner and designer who's label is the engagingly daft named House of Boing. - A very suitable title considering their ethos:
House of Boing aims to add kinetics to people’s lives in a bid to remind them of curiosity and excitement experienced most strongly in childhood. We try to fashion objects and environments re-connecting us to that childlike enthusiasm, the instant reaction to new and exciting objects and activities that a majority of “adults” have lost somewhere along the way. We are playing with the...

Style on Trial
January 30th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
The BBC's Style on Trial series reached it's finale last night with a jury - Lulu Guinness (who's pronunciation of 'decade' gradually became like nails on a chalkboard for me!), Celia Birtwell, Dylan Jones and Jamelia - deciding the most stylish decade of British fashion (which apparently starts in 1940s and ended at the turn of the millennium! I know we've not had a full decade of 'noughties' yet but isn't 8 years worth a mention?) Now, to be fair, I should prefix this post with the admission that I've not seen the whole series so perhaps that, and other...

British Style Genius
October 8th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK
Last night I caught the first episode of the Beeb's new series 'British Style Genius' I, like Susie at Style Bubble & I'm sure many more of the stylish bloggers out there, was really looking forward to a show with the focus on distinct British style, past & present, and not just another 'What to not wear while looking younger &/or naked'-type show.
I rarely watch fashion/clothes shows on TV - I'm limited to Freeview/terrestial channels and most of the shows on offer don't feel very relevant to me, although Trinny & Susanna and Gok have on occasion bestowed a new...

Solar powered clothing
August 19th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK
Solar panels are appearing on everything these days, and in one of those nice blends of tech and fashion, it appears they're now appearing on clothes to help you charge your mobile or your gadgets - thus saving you the perils of a flat battery.
On the left is a solar powered tie that I found via Phones Review: academics at Iowa State University - the panels provide power for a phone charger (which you just pop in a pocket behind the tie). It wasn't just a case of gluing on some panels - they had to make sure the tie...

What a way to wear your hair!
June 16th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK
I was pleased to discover on Friday that the Lates festival has returned to London for the summer. Now if only I can get my GP opening for the same hours I can fix my culture withdrawal and my hayfever woes in one fell swoop!
I have to admit though, that right now the only thing I'm excited about is Hair Hats, which One Part Truth brought to my attention this morning:
Incredible, aren't they? If I were going to Royal Ascot this week I'd love to wear a horse themed hairhat! Unfortunately I have no idea whether you...
