Andy Goldsworthy

June 16th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

I've been a big fan of Andy Goldsworthy's sculpture for many years, and have recently rediscovered his brilliance. Goldsworthy is a British artist whose collaborations with nature produce uniquely personal and intense artworks. Using a seemingly endless range of natural materials—snow, ice, leaves, bark, rock, clay, stones, feathers petals, twigs—he creates outdoor sculpture that manifests a sympathetic contact with the natural world. Before they disappear, or as they disappear, Goldsworthy records his work in photographs. Goldsworthy deliberately explores the tension of working in the area where he finds his materials, and is undeterred by changes by changes in the weather which may...

Shake Pole

April 12th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

This rather lovely installation by Richard Box caught my eye recently. Shake Pole 831 fluorescent tubes powered by the electromagnetic field surrounding overhead power lines. 145 x 39 x 1.5 metres. Spectators report that "touching the tubes altered how much light they produced and running your hand up and down changed where the light was too, as did touching the tube whilst jumping in the air." Read more about the artist, Richard Box,...

Oscar Lhermitte

March 30th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Oscar Lhermitte is studying product design at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design. One of his main interests is the relation people have with objects, and the different reasons they prefer one object to another. In most of his projects, he tries to create a unique relation between the user and the product, by giving it a “hand-made” touch or by involving the user in the design process. Resolving issues with simple eco-friendly solutions is also one of his aims. He thinks it is a designer’s responsibility to observe every single aspect of daily life, and to constantly question...

Augmented Sculpture

March 3rd, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Pablo Valbuena is a Spanish artist who has been working with augmented reality since 2007, altering our perception of real-world space through his light animations. About his Augmented Sculpture project, the artist says: This project is focused on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation. For this purpose two layers are produced that explore different aspects of the space-time reality. On the one hand the physical layer, which controls the real space and shapes the volumetric base that serves as support for the next level. The second level is a virtual projected layer...

A brief hello

December 22nd, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

Hi everyone, As you may know, Chris will shortly be moving on from this blog. We’ll miss him dearly and I’m sure you will too. I’ll be taking over his duties and, to keep things easy for everyone, my name is Chris as well. I’ll be working alongside Helen to maintain normal service. Like the other two, I’m pretty fascinated by innovation in design, the arts and music and so, besides the inside-track on new stuff from LG, I’ll be bringing you those things that catch my eye while I wander the internet. I’ve always loved the use of water in sculpture...

Kinetic beauty

July 9th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

This kinetic sculpture from the BMW museum is at times astonishing. Bear with it - it starts out looking quite random but after a minute becomes beautifully undulating and full of form: A truly beautiful way of using movement to showcase your design - I can't say much more than that!...
