Here at the LG blog we have a keen interest in robots, so while recently spending some time catching up on the latest in this field, reading gorobotics.com’s list of the top 10 robots of the past decade, I was impressed with the range of robots that have been developed over the past ten years. They ranged from toys for the family like the Pleo robotic dinosaur (we want one for the office) that succeeded the Furby, right to the other end of the spectrum with serious pieces of military technology including the Predator Drone unmanned aerial vehicle and the PackBot...

One of my closest friends studied robotics at university, and ever since he told me that one of their most challenging experiments was to get a robot to successfully butter a slice of bread, (an incredibly complex feat of sensitivity, apparently), I have been fascinated by the subject of robot 'touch'. So it was with great interest that I watched a recent video on National Geographic which showed a Japanese humanoid robot with fingers that can pick up small delicate objects, such as straws, nearly as well as people. Maybe it's because WALL-E is in the cinemas right now but the news is full of robots in one shape or another, it seems. Some have a fairly simple purpose in life, such as Robopong, a robot that fires table-tennis balls for anyone stuck at home without a partner. Unlike some ball-firers though, with the addition of an accessory it's still able to pick up balls and reuse them, thus allowing you to keep playing till you drop (or pull the plug).
