MWC 2011 – Windows Phone 7 OS to get a facelift

February 16th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK

The news from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has thus far been dominated by dual-core handsets and the ‘next-generation’ of Android tablets armed with Android 3.0 – Google’s OS designed with tablet use in mind. Which begs the question what happened to the Windows Phone 7 OS? Well it is still here and at Microsoft’s Keynote speech on Monday Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, gave the first demonstration of its upcoming multitasking functionality. So far it only works on third-party apps by freezing them in the background and in some cases will allow for background APIs to be utilized. It looks like...

LG Optimus Black creates art with Keith Haring

February 14th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK

LG’s Optimus Black handset already lays claim to being the world’s slimmest and lightest smartphone, measuring in at just 6mm at its thinnest and 109 grams in weight. But now it has just gotten that bit cooler thanks to LG’s collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation. Two of the late pop-artist's iconic images have been selected to emblazon the back cover of the LG Optimus Black. This is the second time that LG have partnered with the Keith Haring Foundation, with the first being 2008’s collaboration for the KF600 and KF700 with the goal of bringing art into more people’s lives. The...

LG Optimus 3D – the World’s First Full 3D Smartphone

February 14th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK

Two weeks ago, we announced on the Blog that LG were going to release the world’s first 3D smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2011. Well MWC is underway in Barcelona and we are excited that we have detailed information for this eagerly-awaited handset to share with you all.

Now officially named the LG Optimus 3D, LG’s first 3D phone is equipped with a dual 5MP lens camera which allows you to capture 3D images and record 3D video on the go, whilst glasses are not necessary to view 3D content.  Not only can you shoot and view in 3D with the Optimus 3D, but you can share content anytime, anywhere via an HDMI 1.4 connection on 3D TVs and monitors as well as upload and stream on YouTube’s 3D channel (youtube.com/3D), all directly from your phone. To make the 3D experience even fuller and immersive, there is also a bright 4.3-inch WVGA screen which is great for viewing 3D (and 2D) content and users can also navigate through the phone’s 3D interface with a unique 3D Hot Key, which presents five 3D-dedicated UIs including Gallery, Camera, Games & Apps, YouTube 3D and 3D Guide.

Besides being the first full 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D is so exciting due to its superior speed and power. The Optimus 3D uses LG’s unique ‘Tri-Dual’ technology, utilising dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory, meaning unlike other dual-core smart phones, the LG Optimus 3D also offers significant performance benefits as a result of the faster transfer of data between the dual-core and dual-memory. This means you can browse web pages, multitask between programs, play games at a higher frame rate and enjoy movies more smoothly than ever before. As Dr. Jong-seok Park said ‘We’ve incorporated every feature for the power user and we think they’ll be pleased with what they see.’

Key Specifications:

  • 1GHz Dual-Core Dual-Channel processor (Texas Instruments OMAP4)
  • 4.3-inch 3D WVGA screen
  • 8GB memory and 4Gb LP DDR2
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 5MP dual-lens camera
  • 2D: 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 recording and playback
  • 3D: 720p H.264 SEI recording and playback
  • HSPA+, DLNA/HDMI 1.4
  • H.264, H.263, DivX, MKV, WMV-9, ASF, AVI, 3GP, MP4

If you are as excited as us about the Optimus 3D, then you should know that it will be available in Q2. It will initially be released with Android 2.2 Froyo and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We will bring you the upgrade schedule for the UK when it is available in due course.

The LG Blog’s Christmas Message

December 23rd, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Merry Christmas Everybody! It's been a brilliant 2009 for LG and it seems an apt time to look back at some of the highlights from this year! We started the year on a high, winning the CES Innovations Award for the LH9500 LCD HDTV. In February, we welcomed Marc from Coolest Gadgets to be our man on the scene covering MWC in Barcelona. It was the official launch of the Arena KM900, our first phone to include LG’s 3D S-Class user interface (UI) and we got to see a live video call on the LG GD910 watch phone to none other than Microsoft’s...

That’s a wrap!

February 20th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

So my time at MWC is over. I've met some interesting people and seen some pretty cool stuff over the past few days but sadly it's back to real life for me. It just remains for me to thank all involved for making it happen, and I'll leave you with some crowd photos to try and give some small impression of what 50,000 people, 8 exhibition halls and the press room where most of this was written from looks like. ...

Hands on with the Arena

February 17th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

The Arena is, unsurprisingly, a popular phone on the LG stand but we managed to pry one loose for a few minutes and record a quick video demonstration of the UI. In what has to be the most unstructured presentation I've ever done (it was the first time I'd picked up the phone) you'll see me navigating some of the menus, tuning the radio and playing some music. You can see the result on Youtube or below. (Once again, thanks to Frank on LGBlog.de for taking the...
