Mark Ronson for Gucci
September 9th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
As the FW collections are filling the rails in the shops and our ears are begging to be fed something other than the summer hits, an interesting partnership is grabbing our attention. Mark Ronson has designed a shoe line for Italian luxury fashion house Gucci. The range, which is out in October, consists of 16 men’s styles and two women’s styles and the collection is set to become a collector's item with pop-up stores travelling the world. As well as designing footwear Mark Ronson has produced a 12-inch vinyl record with exclusive tracks as a gift with the sneaker.
The Gucci pop-up...

In B flat: Music, web 2.0 style
May 15th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
In Bb 2.0 is a collaborative music/spoken word project which seems to be growing all the time - I first stumbled upon it on Wednesday and in the past day another video has been added to the mix.(Ok, that may not sound like a massive growth but as Darren Solomon, the creator, says:
I am being selective, in order to maintain the feel of the project. Many, many thanks to all who have submitted!
This is my kinda of web2.0 project - a simple but effective idea put out there for others to bring into being, creative, collaborative and crucially relatively simple...

ToneMatrix
April 7th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
André Michelle is a German flash designer who works for Hobnox.
I was recently passed a link to his ToneMatrix, which is one of many fascinating audio experiments on his labratory page.
André's own modest description of the ToneMatrix...
Simple sinewave synthesizer triggered by an ordinary 16step sequencer. Each triggered step causes a force on the underlaying wave-map, which makes it more cute.
If ever there was a paragraph that exemplified 'more than the sum of its parts', that's it. Despite its apparent simplicity, the ToneMatrix is one of the most addictive and compelling pieces of programming I've ever played with.
Try it for yourself...

Found Sound and Lost Music
April 2nd, 2009 by LG Blog UK
Christian Marclay's work explores connections between sound, photography, video, and film. A pioneer of using gramaphone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collage, Marclay is, in the words of critic Thom Jurek, perhaps the "unwitting inventor of turntablism."
Marclay began his exploration into sound and art through performances with turntables in 1979, while he was still a student. Early work includes a series of ‘Recycled Records’ (1980-86), fragmented and reassembled vinyl records that became hybrid objects that could be played, replete with abrupt leaps in tone and sound.
"I realized that when I listened to a record, there...

Every Sound You Can Imagine
February 25th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
I was just catching up on the excellent electronic music blog, 'Disquiet', and read news of an interesting exhibition at New Langton Arts in San Francisco, (which discounts my attendance, I'm sorry to say).
The exhibtion is called Every Sound You Can Imagine and explores the cross-fertilization between musicians and visual artists, revealing the vital interaction of experimental music with cutting-edge visual art.
Langton presents rare and never-before-heard tapes from its archive by musicians, performers, poets, and visual artists who have performed at Langton since its founding in 1974, including Alvin Curran, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Wadada Leo Smith. Sgt....

Printer Jam
February 23rd, 2009 by LG Blog UK
Allow me to pursue my enjoyment of latter day musique concrète just a little while longer, I'm nearly done...
Easing us into Monday is Hospital Records wunderkind, Mistabishi and his pumping ode to the nightmare of the contemporary office, 'Printer Jam'
Mistabishi - Printer Jam from Hospital Records on Vimeo.
You may well have heard this all over the radio at the moment. Its popularity shows I'm not the only one who enjoys the bleeps, bloops, clicks and whirrs of modern life. Thank goodness for that.
Hear an interview and more music from Mistabishi on BBC Radio 1...

Hard Drive Drums
February 18th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
Thought I'd take a quick breather in between the hectic flurry of MWC updates and look over something of the nice things I've been meaning to post for a while.
First up, hot on the heels of Felix's Machines that I raved about back in January, we have another wonderful example of steam-driven music-making. I present to you the recycled rhythms of the hard drive drum machine
More percussion-based curiosities in the very near...

Tuning In
February 10th, 2009 by LG Blog UK
At first glance, harmonic mixing software Mixed In Key appears to be a tool for DJs, but a bit of exploration reveals a stunningly clever piece of software.
Using sophisticated algorithms, Mixed In Key analyses your music collection and marks each track with its respective musical key
The key can either be expressed traditionally ('G Major', 'D Minor' etc) or as a code based on the Camelot Wheel, which requires no musical knowledge.
Once you have flagged the tracks in your music collection with their keys, you can put together groups of songs that are perfectly in tune with each other, an exercise...
