Microsoft give their Windows Phone 7 OS a fresh and fruity upgrade!
May 26th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK
We know the people who work for technology companies work incredibly hard. So hard they often end up working through lunch. Or at least that’s how it looks to me. Just look at the series of Google Android operating systems - Éclair, Donut and Gingerbread to name but a few. It’s enough to make me hungry. And now it looks like the guys at Microsoft skipped lunch as well as they announce the new update for their Windows Phone 7 OS will be called ‘Mango’. At least it looks like they’re going someway toward getting their 5-a-day!
With only a 4%...

Does the future hold touch-sensitive walls?
May 5th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK
We live in a technological world, surrounded by electronic devices. Knowing this it is unsurprising to find out we are surrounded by ambient electromagnetic radiation coming from everything from powerlines to Wi-Fi data. Don’t worry though, this background radiation is not harmful, in fact researchers at Microsoft and the University of Washington have found that it can be useful to our lives.
The human body is capable of acting as an antenna, and the researchers at Microsoft have found a way to use this alongside the ambient electromagnetic radiation in the home to create an entirely new type of interface. Essentially...

3D Modelling on your Phone
March 28th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK
The brainy chaps at Microsoft Research have put their heads together and developed a 3D modeling application for a mobile phone! It works very simply – take multiple photos of the object from different viewpoints and the software uses overlapping shots to create a photo-realistic 3D model that can be rotated and viewed from different angles.
In the video below Microsoft Researcher, Johannes Kopf, demonstrates the application by taking photos of his car and then showing the subsequent 3D model created by the application. To create the 3D mapping of an object like a car takes around 40 photos, whereas something...

MWC 2011 – Windows Phone 7 OS to get a facelift
February 16th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK
The news from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has thus far been dominated by dual-core handsets and the ‘next-generation’ of Android tablets armed with Android 3.0 – Google’s OS designed with tablet use in mind. Which begs the question what happened to the Windows Phone 7 OS?
Well it is still here and at Microsoft’s Keynote speech on Monday Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, gave the first demonstration of its upcoming multitasking functionality. So far it only works on third-party apps by freezing them in the background and in some cases will allow for background APIs to be utilized.
It looks like...

Xbox 360 in 3D with LG
May 24th, 2010 by Dave@LGUK
Displaybank has estimated that 6.2m 3D TVs will ship in 2010, a relatively small 3% share of all TV shipments. This is predicted to steadily rise to 31%, or 83m, in 2014. New technology will always have its cynics, but with PS3 and Xbox360 committing to 3D gaming, sales of 3DTVs can only be set to rise.
At this year’s CES Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said that Xbox 360 was fully compatible with 3D in terms of technology. But he also questioned the level of interest around 3D gaming, stating "I think right now we're unsure what level of interest there is...

Microsoft Go Psychedelic
April 27th, 2009 by agenda21
Microsoft managed to carve themselves a niche in the creative community by selling MP3 hardware with renowned artists custom-designing images to be etched into the back of the players. And they've continued upping their credibility in the arts community with the viral leak of a set of wallpapers for the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. While not epic in scope or ambition, it's a nice look into how the huge software giant is making inroads to creative outlets.
The above Noby Noby Boy-inspired number is currently sitting on my desktop, and there's more from this artist...

See the stars like never before
March 20th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK
I've just watched a video from TED.org of the presentation given by Harvard Center for Astrophysics Researcher Roy Gould and Curtis Wong, manager of Microsoft's Next Media Research, unveiling Microsoft's new WorldWide Telescope a few weeks ago.
According to Gould produces a "holistic approach" by weaving together the best images and information from satellites and telescopes all over the world and will have "as profound an impact on they way we view the universe as Galileo did 4 centuries ago." Big claims but apparently it made Robert Scoble, MD of Fast Company.TV and, according to Wikipedia an "American blogger, technical evangelist,...
