Attack of the Robot Fish

March 21st, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Don't ask what I was doing reading a defence technology website, let's just concentrate on the fact that UK developed robotic fish are to be released into the sea off northern Spain as part of a three-year research project funded by the European Commission. The purpose of the fish is pollution detection. The life-like creatures, which will mimic the undulating movement of real fish, will be equipped with tiny chemical sensors to find the source of potentially hazardous pollutants in the water, such as leaks from vessels in the port or underwater pipelines. Thanks to Wi-Fi technology, they will then be able...

Reyooz

February 11th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Reyooz enables everyone to give away things that have been taking up space for too long, or lets you look for things other people are giving away. The rule at Reyooz is that everything is offered free. The idea is that by Reyoozing your stuff you help your community, de-clutter homes and help the environment. Pay Reyooz a...

Where’s my silver jump-suit?

January 26th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

I might be a little late on the uptake here, but last week I saw, for the first time, these giant ad-screens on the London Underground. I'm in two minds about them. Part of me is amazed at the paper-thin giant screens and the sheer level of 50's style vision-of-the-future they exude. Another part of me is reluctant to accept yet another level of intrusive distracto-vision into my daily life. Still, I guess I'll only start worrying when I'm faced with Minority Report-style hologram advertising Now - where are the jet packs and flying...

A brief hello

December 22nd, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

Hi everyone, As you may know, Chris will shortly be moving on from this blog. We’ll miss him dearly and I’m sure you will too. I’ll be taking over his duties and, to keep things easy for everyone, my name is Chris as well. I’ll be working alongside Helen to maintain normal service. Like the other two, I’m pretty fascinated by innovation in design, the arts and music and so, besides the inside-track on new stuff from LG, I’ll be bringing you those things that catch my eye while I wander the internet. I’ve always loved the use of water in sculpture...

Coke Can Sculptures

June 3rd, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

Via Coolest Gadgets comes these rather excellent Coke Can Sculptures of famous UK landmarks (and by UK they don't just mean London, which is a nice touch). They also have a great green message, of reusing & recycling spent materials into something new: The Big Ben is nice but I prefer the Birmingham Bull (above, in between the real thing and a curious passer-by) - creating buildings or other geometric forms is easier to do with cans than to create something organic and flowing: that takes real skill and an artistic flair. Hats off to sculptor Pamina Stewart for her work. This...

As one door closes… a light bulb grows bright?

March 7th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

To make up for the relative quiet last week (hope you didn't miss us too much!) here's another post to keep you going. Happy weekend! Inhabitat and a free newspaper I found on the bus the other night were keen to discuss the merits of this new green energy Revolving door by Fluxxlab. Image from Techchee Inhabitat praise it as being "an ingenious sustainable energy harvesting idea that makes you wonder why no one else has thought of it before." Sorry to burst the bubbles guys, but somebody did think of it: in 2005 on Halfbakery. But that's not to discount the Fluxxlab...

Green thinking in Abu Dhabi

February 14th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

I have a nice, eco-friendly end to the week - according to the BBC, building work has started in Abu Dhabi on Masdar ("the source" in Arabic and meant here as a reference to the sun/solar energy), the world's first zero-carbon, and zero-waste, car-free city. Designed by Norman Foster of London architects Foster & Partners, Masdar City will cost $22bn, take eight years to build and be home to around 50,000 people. Sounding reminiscent of something from Blade Runner, it will be powered predominantly by solar energy and residents will travel in pods set on magnetic tracks. According to Evelyn Lee...

A new way to watch the world go by..

February 12th, 2008 by Dave@LGUK

Today sees the launch of the Discovery Channel's Earth Live web application - brought to my attention by the ever-vigilant chaps at Wired.com. "It may be more important than ever to track the state of the planet and Discovery Earth Live is designed to help you do that" says the Earth Live page. It's big talk but the software for the application is pretty impressive - using Adobe Flex technology to wrap video around a three-dimensional object in real time AND allow you to move the globe around without loss of the video frames. I have already successfully lost a...
