LG Cinema 3D – user review videos
May 31st, 2011 by Dave@LGUKWe recently posted about our ‘LG Home’ event, where we invited users along from the What Hi-Fi, Cnet and Stuff magazine forums to have a look at our new home entertainment range ahead of its release. Well two of the lucky winners were drawn at random and each won a Cinema 3D TV for their homes!
The two winners were Richard and Adam, who each received a Cinema 3D TV and a year’s subscription to Sky HD, the package that comes with the Sky 3D channel. We caught up with them after they had some time to get to grips with their new TVs and had a little chat with each of them to find out what they thought of their new toy.
Richard had previously been a staunch advocate of Plasma technology, but the quality of the 2D image changed his mind, swaying him in favour of LED. He was also particularly impressed with Smart TV, rating the iPlayer and YouTube functions highly due to the clear picture and absence of buffering, even with his low-speed broadband connection.
All of this before Richard had even turned on 3D – saying he was “thrilled with it” in reference to the 3D experience.
Adam was our second winner to get his living room kitted out with a brand new LG Cinema 3D TV. He loved the sense of event that was rekindled amongst the family, as they sat down together to watch a 3D film. The family friendly nature of Cinema 3D was another key point for Adam, who felt he could relax watching Cinema 3D with his children, as he was not concerned about them damaging the glasses, as Cinema 3D glasses are a fraction of the cost of active 3D glasses.

LG’s Cinema 3D range gets the thumbs up

At the recent LG Home, we invited a number of users from CNET, What Hi-Fi and Stuff Magazine along to try out our new Cinema 3D technology before the range hit the shops.
We had our entire Cinema 3D range on display, showing off a wide range of 3D content including movies, games and sport via the Sky 3D channel. We all had a great night topped off with a few drinks and a gaming tournament, playing Call Of Duty: Black Ops on the Xbox 360 in 3D. Sadly I didn’t win, but the experience was enough to convince not only me, but also everyone else that Cinema 3D offers a better experience over traditional active shutter technology.
After the event two lucky winners took home the ultimate 3D package: a 47” LG Cinema 3D TV and a year’s free subscription to Sky World HD, which includes the Sky 3D channel. The winners were Adam from Stratford-upon-Avon and Richard from Sussex.
We caught up with both Adam and Richard at the LG Home and got their opinions after their first taste of Cinema 3D
Having lived with Cinema 3D for a while Adam found that “Cinema 3D has created a feeling of ‘event TV’ for us, with all the family gathered round to watch a movie together … the kids want to watch everything in 3D now”.
Richard particularly liked the Cinema 3D glasses, saying they “are great: no flicker and no headaches … LG is on to a winner with Cinema 3D”.
We also interviewed Simon Warney, an executive producer from Framestore, the largest visual effects and animation studio in Europe…
At LG we truly believe that Cinema 3D offers a significantly more immersive and enjoyable 3D experience over active-shutter technology. Active-shutter has dominated the market up until now, but it is a flawed technology for several reasons. Many users find the flicker and cross-talk prevalent with active-shutter technology detracts significantly from the experience, with some complaining of headaches and eye fatigue as a consequence. Compare this with LG’s LW650T, which has been certified ‘flicker-free’ by Intertek and TUV, two of the most respected inspection and certification bodies in the world, making it the first 3DTV to receive this designation. One CNET user who tried out Cinema 3D commented “the active shutter flickers a bit too much, and I can actually notice it … and it takes away and pulls you out of the experience. Whereas with this [Cinema 3D] you just plonk them on and it feels like sunglasses”.
Not to mention cross-talk is much less prevalent with Cinema 3D technology.
Another great feature of Cinema 3D over active-shutter is the glasses used. Our Cinema 3D technology uses the same type of glasses as used in the Cinema for 3D, meaning they are both light in weight and cheaper to buy and replace. This is because all of the technology is housed in the television, not in the glasses like active-shutter. Practically this means that you will never have to worry about charging your 3D glasses and buying multiple pairs to get your friends around to watch them won’t break the bank, as Cinema 3D glasses cost just a few pounds a pair, compared to up to £100 for the active glasses.
The Cinema 3D glasses are also particularly ‘kid friendly’ thanks to the cheap nature you won’t be heartbroken if a pair gets dropped by your children. Interestingly one of the CNET users also stated that he had watched active 3D with his daughter and the weight of the glasses combined with a “small child’s nose” meant they kept slipping off, but that the glasses used for Cinema 3D were problem free! Personally I also find that the Cinema 3D glasses sit much more comfortably over the top of my normal glasses, something I never found was the case with bulkier active-shutter glasses.
With 7 pairs of the glasses in the box as standard, this means that Cinema 3D is really a technology to enjoy with family and friends. In comparison to active 3D, Cinema 3D has a wider viewing angle, making it easier to get your friends round to enjoy the football or a movie in 3D, without having to squeeze in around the screen to get the best of the 3D experience.
