Quarterly Results Reflect Record-High Flat Panel TV Shipments,
Strong Appliances Revenues and Profitable Mobile Business

LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced fourth quarter 2011 consolidated revenues of KRW 13.81 trillion (USD 12.05 billion) with an operating profit of KRW 23 billion (USD 20 million). Quarter-on-quarter revenue growth reflected strong performance in home entertainment and home appliances with improved operating profit in the mobile and TV businesses.

Unaudited consolidated financial results, based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the period ending Dec. 31, 2011, showed a net loss of KRW 112 billion (USD 97.73 million) in the quarter, primarily due to a loss on investments in affiliated companies and net financial expense.

Full-year 2011 consolidated revenues reached KRW 54.26 trillion (USD 48.97 billion). Despite a 2011 net loss of KRW 433 billion (USD 391 million), operating profits improved significantly to KRW 280 billion (USD 253 million) from KRW 176 billion (USD 153 million) for full-year 2010.

The LG Home Entertainment Company shipped a record high 8.8 million flat panel TVs from October to December, increasing revenues 17.6 percent from the previous quarter to KRW 6.31 trillion (USD 5.5 billion). While quarterly sales declined modestly from the 2010 period, a strong 2011 holiday season and more premium product mix led by CINEMA 3D TV resulted in an operating profit of KRW 150 billion (USD 130.9 million) in the fourth quarter of 2011. Full-year 2011 home entertainment sales were KRW 22.38 trillion (USD 20.2 billion) with operating profit of KRW 423 billion (USD 382 million). For 2012, LG will continue strengthening its position in 3D and Smart TVs with a broadened line of TVs with Cinema Screen design and quality content.

The LG Mobile Communications Company improved its position in the fourth quarter with operating profits of KRW 12 billion (USD 10 million) and sales of KRW 2.78 trillion (USD 2.42 billion) on the strength of premium smartphones such as Optimus LTE (Long Term Evolution). For full-year 2011, the company posted sales of KRW
11.69 trillion (USD 10.55 billion), a decline of 9.9 percent from 2010. For 2012, the company will continue to strengthen its position by focusing on strategic markets with expanded smartphone line-up led by LTE smartphones.

The LG Home Appliance Company posted record-high quarterly sales of KRW 2.99 trillion (USD 2.6 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2011 with strong growth in Korea, the U.S. and developing countries with more energy-efficient products. Modestly lower operating profit of KRW 65 billion (USD 57 million) in the fourth quarter reflected increased raw material costs and unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Total 2011 home appliance sales were KRW 11.11 trillion (USD 10.03 billion) with operating profit of KRW 295 billion (USD 266 million). New energy efficient appliances being introduced around the world this year are expected to contribute to 2012 revenue growth.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solutions Company reported sales of KRW 680 billion (USD 593 million) in the fourth quarter, essentially flat with the 2010 fourth quarter. An operating loss of KRW 38 billion (USD 33 million) was attributed to negative macroeconomic issues and product mix weakness in developing markets. For full-year 2011, the company recorded air conditioning and energy solutions revenues of KRW 4.56 trillion (USD 4.11 billion) and operating profit of KRW 58 billion (USD 52 million). The company is increasing its focus on high-efficiency air conditioning systems to help drive sales in 2012.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil the world’s largest 3D Ultra Definition (UD) TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. By combining LG’s industry-leading 3D technology and Smart TV function with UD display technology, the 84-inch TV breaks new ground in immersive 3D home entertainment.

“LG is pushing the limits of home entertainment innovation with this 3D UD TV,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “We are bringing together all our Smart TV and 3D knowledge in the 3D UD TV in order to demonstrate to the CES audience that LG is committed to being the world’s leading brand for immersive home entertainment in 2012 and beyond.”

LG’s 3D UD TV boasts superb picture quality with 8 million pixels, four times the resolution clarity (3840×2160) of existing Full HD TV panels. Combined with LG’s Slim and Narrow Bezel Design, the 3D UD TV provides the most convincing 3D viewing experience currently available outside of a movie theater. What’s more, 3D Depth Control allows users to customize their viewing experience by controlling the 3D effect while 3D Sound Zooming provides users with 3D sound that rivals the output of all but the best home theater systems.

Via the superior display panel, users can access LG’s Smart TV ecosystem, which comprises over 1,200 apps and gives users access to a growing range of premium content services such as the 3D Zone where viewers can select from a wealth of 3D movies. The imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expands the availability of 3D content to limitless levels. Users can easily browse and navigate the Smart TV ecosystem using LG’s new, ergonomically-designed Magic Remote which now recognizes four different types of command input: Voice Recognition, Wheel, Magic Gesture and Point.

Saturday’s big match may not have gone the way the red half of Manchester would have wanted, as Barcelona claimed their record breaking fourth European title in a 3-1 victory. But those lucky enough to be present at LG’s Life’s Good celebration at The Raynes Park Tavern in London will surely all agree that a good night was had by all, as hundreds of fans packed in to enjoy the game in 3D.

With Tim Lovejoy was host for the evening, with former Fulham and West Ham legend Tony Gale and former Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas also present. They hung out chatting with fans about all aspects of the game whilst enjoying the 3D experience themselves.

Decked out with the new LG CF3D Full HD 3D Ready Cinema 3D Projector, as well as a range of Cinema 3D TV’s, The Raynes Park Tavern had the full LG Cinema 3D Pub Package, designed to offer pub goers the ultimate shared 3D experience.

LG has installed in over 2000 pubs and clubs nationwide to date. The new Cinema 3D range is perfect for group viewing and the pub environment, due to its wide viewing angle and cheap glasses, the same as many of us have used in the cinema. The unparalleled experience will encourage more people to watch upcoming sport events in the lively atmosphere of the pub rather than at home – a trend confirmed by The Raynes Park Tavern in London which has already experienced an overall 10-15% increase in sales and 25% on big sporting occasions since installing the complete LG Cinema 3D Pub Package.

If you are looking for the ideal 3D experience for the home then our recently released Cinema 3D range could be just what you are looking for!

With the launch world’s first LED Cinema 3D range we are offering customers a more comfortable and inclusive way to watch 3D in the home. Thanks to our patented FPR film we have the world’s first certified flicker free screens, earning the certificate from Intertek and TUV, two of the most respected inspection and certification bodies in the world, making it the first 3DTV to receive this designation. Combine this with less cross-talk in comparison to the standard active 3D screen and you have a more comfortable 3D experience, even for all 2 hours and 40 minutes of Avatar in 3D!

Comfort is a big factor for those looking to enjoy 3D in the home and our passive system benefits from the lightweight glasses as used in the cinema, weighing in at around half the weight of active shutter glasses.

Another advantage of our Cinema 3D glasses over active shutter glasses is the price point – with active shutter glasses costing around £100 a pair in comparison to the Cinema 3D glasses that start at around £2 a pair. With 7 pairs in the box, Cinema 3D is the ideal 3D experience to share with family and friends without having to remortgage your house for extra sets of glasses. Cinema 3D also has a wider viewing angle in comparison to active 3D due to the glasses not having to “sync” with the TV, making it easier to get friends and family around to enjoy 3D.

The range is available in sizes between 32” and 55” and all come equipped with LG’s Smart TV technology allowing access to a web browser, catch up TV, hundreds of customisable apps, rental and subscription services including Acetrax and VIEWSTER, music services and radio channels and even social networking to keep on top of Twitter and Facebook without having to turn on your computer.

To make this service that much easier to use LG have also launched the Magic Motion Remote Control, a wi-fi motion sensitive remote allowing for easy point and click navigation.

Throw in the fact that we also use side-by-side frame format as Sky and it is no surprise why we are Sky’s first choice for 3D TVs, bringing the best content from Sky’s own dedicated 3D channel into the home. Currently Sky subscribers can get up to £400 cash back on an LG 3DTV!

The wait is finally over. The Gadget Show Live officially kicks off today with enough new technology, gadgets and robots (a personal fave) to entertain event the most cynical technophile.

One of the first stands you see upon entering the show is our LG stand, replete with our latest Home Entertainment solutions for 2011, our hero range of Cinema 3D TVs and of course our new Smart TV solutions.

Lots of people were impressed by the absence of flicker on our 3D Cinema sets, which are the first to be certified flicker free by Intertek and TUV – two of the most respected inspection and certification bodies in the world. A lot of people also took this opportunity to test the improved viewing angles on the Cinema 3D sets as they wandered around the stand trying wider and wider viewing angles.

Smart TV is also a key product for this year and is naturally on display at the Gadget Show Live. Being demonstrated on the PZ950T Plasma TV, Smart TV provides access to a wide range of apps, a web browser and access to premium content including BBC iPlayer, Google Maps and Acetrax and Viewster movie streaming services. This was demonstrated with the Magic Motion Remote that visitors were keen to try out.

For those not in the market for a new TV, but still keen on getting the Smart TV experience is the ST600 Smart TV upgrader that is also on display at the Gadget Show Live. Offering any TV with an HDMI port access to all of our Smart TV content for a snip at just £100.

Still wowing the crowds is our EL9500 15” OLED TV. At just 2.9mms in depth, the OLED is blessed with glorious picture quality – yet is one that people can’t help but stare at from the side. Though it is thinner than a pound coin so it’s understandable!

If you’re looking for an interactive experience then you are in luck as the LG stand is kitted out with an F1 Racing Simulator developed by industry leaders rFactor. You get to sit in our LG Formula 1 car and race a lap in 3D powered by three D3242P 3D monitors. If this wasn’t incentive enough, whoever has fastest time at the end of the show will walk away with a full 3D cinema Package.

Naturally I didn’t spend all my time on the LG stand and stretched my legs to go on my usual hunt for robots and other tech gems. In this hunt I found many a cool thing including Robot Wars…

Multi-player racing gaming…

An original Batmobile from the 1960’s…

Some awesome DJing on the Sennheiser stand…

On my way for a spot of lunch I was confronted by the most wonderful thing my eyes may have ever seen. Brasso’s Gadget Gran showing the cleaning powers of Brasso by giving a mean looking robot a bit of a polish!

If you’re heading along to The Gadget Show this week, come by our Cinema 3D lounge, settle in on comfy sofa set-up, open a bag of LG popcorn, pop on a pair of our lightweight polarized 3D glasses and see for yourself why LG is Sky’s first choice for 3D television. We’re at stand C1. See you there.

We are excited to announce LG’s 2011 range featuring Cinema 3D™ and Smart TV will be available in stores next week!

We’ve been talking about Cinema 3D™ and Smart TV often on the blog lately and have been hotly anticipating the launch dates. In last week’s LG Home event, some lucky bloggers and forum members previewed the products and technology and gave them a great reception.

LW550T

What we have here include the world’s first flicker-free 3D TV range (LW450U, LW550T, LW650T series) that come in screen sizes from 32 to 55 inch. Each Cinema 3D™ TV comes with 7 pairs of polarized glasses, the same as those used in most 3D cinemas nationwide. If you need extra, you can get them from just £2 each. One of the impressive things about Cinema 3D™ is its wide viewing angle which means family and friends now can truly enjoy the magic of 3D together (without having to remortgage your home to afford extra glasses).

At this year’s CES, LG’s Smart TV platform won an Innovations Award. Smart TV provides access to a huge choice of services and content including apps, online videos and social networking sites*. With LG’s Smart TV service, you can get almost limitless content in big screen quality and on demand.

The 2011 range is currently on show at the Gadget Show Live (13th – 17th April). If you are going we will see you there. There are also chances to see and try out the new products at the nationwide Life’s Good Lounge Tour, which will visit shopping centres** from 22nd April – 26th June.

If you are a Sky customer looking to get the 3D cinema experience there is some good news. You can get up to £400 off an LG Cinema 3D TV until 7th June. More info on this can be found at sky.com/LGoffer

*LG Smart TV platform provides content including:

With CES over for another year it is time to stop, catch our breath and have a look at all the technology and innovation that was unveiled in another successful year at CES. LG took home awards in 9 categories including a much-coveted “Best of Innovations” award for its 3D ready, Internet-connected 55-inch full LED LW9500 HDTV.

Smart Upgrader ST600

‘Smart’ was introduced as one of the key themes for LG at this year’s show, with Smart phones, Smart Home Appliances and Smart TV on display. Whilst this was undoubtedly a theme shared by a lot of manufacturers exhibiting, LG caught a lot of eyes with their ST600 Smart upgrader. Essentially the ST600 is a peripheral box that is plugged into any television with a HDMI port and gives access to LG’s Smart TV content, including access to thousands of movies, customisable apps, videos and the ability to browse the Web through an easy to navigate interface. Indications for the UK point toward Smart TV allowing access to BBC i-Player, Acetrax, Viewster, Google Maps, Twitter, Facebook, Accuweather and Picasa amongst numerous others*.

The ST600 Smart Upgrader was also listed by Esquire Magazine as one of their ‘Best of CES 2011’ products.

Optimus Black

One of LG’s most talked about products unveiled was the LG Optimus Black handset. Part of LG’s Optimus smart phone family, the Optimus Black is a stylish and super slim smart phone running Android 2.2, but with a promise to receive 2.3 before long.

One of the big talking points surrounding the Optimus Black is the screen, more specifically the brightness of the screen. Using LG’s proprietary NOVA technology the Optimus Black promises the brightest screen ever kicking out 700nits of luminosity, whilst also promising a 50% reduction on power consumption when used indoors in comparison to a standard LCD display.

Smart Grid

Sticking with the Smart theme, Home Appliances were also given the Smart makeover this year, with plenty of new technology on display. But it was the LG Smart Grid that had us salivating at the prospect of controlling our home appliances remotely using a smartphone or a tablet. Undoubtedly one for the future, but amazing nonetheless, Smart Grid links your appliances including dishwasher, washer & dryer, refrigerator, oven and even a HOM-BOT robotic vacuum cleaner. The Smart Grid will then let the appliances work together for economical and practical reasons. For example, using Smart Grid LG washing machines can program washing machines to do the washing at the most cost effective time, utilising the “Recommend Time” and “Lowest Rate” options. In a similar way LG’s refrigerators can adjust their functions to save on energy bills at peak times, or ramp up cooling power when energy rates are low.

The World’s Largest Full LED 3D TV

Named by T3 magazine as one of the ‘Best 3D Gadgets of CES 2011’ the LZ9700 is the biggest Full LED 3D TV in the world today measuring in at a living-room remodeling 72inches.

Aside from the obvious jaw-dropping effect of its size, the LZ9700 is packed full of features including 400Hz, Smart TV and a Magic Motion Remote Control as standard.

Super Slim LED Monitor E2290V

The CES Innovations Award-Winning E2290V monitor is sure to be the must-have monitor for the year to come. Measuring in at an unbeatably slim 7.2mm in depth, the E2290V not only offers a great picture due to its LED lighting and 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, but also a stylish design.

With a response time of just 2 milliseconds and Full HD 1080p, the picture on the E2290V will remain clear and bright even during the fastest action sequences making it ideal for watching Blu-ray movies or gaming.

With CES just around the corner we thought it was time to cast a nostalgic eye back to the last CES to have a look at some of the successes of the show and how well those successes have been integrated into the market.

The LG pod at CES earlier this year was jam packed with great technology, in fact over 2 football pitches in size of technology, and saw us walk away with an impressive 15 awards at the end of the show!

3D TV:

One of the buzzwords ahead of last year’s CES was 3D TV, with LG displaying a wide range on their stand including a 72inch beast!
Well 2010 has certainly been the year of 3D, with LG performing admirably in this field. We were the first to launch a Full LED 3D TV in the form of the LX9900 and are still the only manufacturer offering both active 3D and passive, or cinema, 3D. It was this inclusion of ‘cinema 3D’ into our range that helped shape our official partnership with Sky, as they recommend us as their first choice manufacturer for 3D TVs.

Magic Motion Remote:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Magic Motion Remote try picturing a Nintendo Wii controller that you use to navigate your way through all of the actions you would normally undertake on a standard remote control. The TVs using the magic motion remote have a specially designed UI with larger icons to make navigation easier, as well as a series of inbuilt games that utilize the Magic Motion Remote including Whack-a-mole.
The Magic Motion Remote has been introduced into the market on some of the high end TVs including the LX9900 Full LED 3DTV and has been received well, with AVForums branding it “a neat feature that will appeal to many users against using the larger more common remote control.”

OLED:

OLED or organic light emitting diode is a relatively new technology to date that enables an exceptional picture quality on a TV that meaures in at 2.5mms in depth, and the 15” EL9500 model that LG demoed at CES earlier this year has been the only OLED model on the market this year.
Well LG have taken the next logical step and launched a 31” OLED at this year’s IFA show in Berlin. It is not yet on the market, but it is surely only a matter of time before OLED is widely available.

With only a matter of weeks before CES 2011 kicks off we’re sure you’re as excited as we are to see what new products get rolled out! Stay tuned to the blog as we will be reporting all the big news as and when it happens!

Ask most people and they will be able to tell you that LED offers better picture quality than LCD, but most won’t be able to tell you why.

The Facts:

The difference between LED and LCD is all to do with the lighting on the television in question. Both use LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) to produce the picture, but LCD uses fluorescent lighting to illuminate the picture where LED uses, unsurprisingly, LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes. There are benefits when it comes to choosing LED over LCD, for example LEDs are smaller than fluorescent lighting meaning you can have a slimmer television, not to mention an LED television can be up to 35% more energy efficient.

Full LED

Traditional LED televisions have the LED lighting situated around the edge of the picture (occasionally with one in the center), which works perfectly well on a smaller size television. But when you are looking at the bigger size televisions sometimes you can see a lighter patch in the center of the screen as there are no LEDs lighting that part of the set. LG have come up with a solution in the form of fully backlit LED televisions, where specially designed LED chips light the whole of the screen, ensuring no lighter ‘halo’ in the middle of the TV and the deepest blacks as these LEDs can be switched off. For example, the LX9900 active 3D is a Full LED television and is lit by 1200 LEDs, considerably more than an edge lit LED television.

Verdict:

The simple fact is that LED televisions are more expensive than LCD, but the picture quality is generally better so you get what you pay for essentially. But at the end of the day it comes down to what is right for each consumer. Some will prefer the slim design and superior picture quality of LED, whilst others will prefer the lower price of the LCD.

Last night LG Ireland hosted a gaming night for Irish technology journalists and bloggers to be able to get hands on with the products and enjoy some beer and pizza whilst they were at it.

The 15 selected guests were from a range of publications and blogs including the Irish Times, Silicon Republic, Tech.tv, Digitology, Boards.ie, AnthonyMcG and Culch.ie. They were treated to an evening of gaming in a room specially styled to give off an ‘at home’ experience to all who attended. This set-up included working displays of the LX9900 active shutter Full LED 3D TV playing Medal of Honour and Fifa on the Xbox 360. On the other side of the 3D fence there was the passive technology LD950 connected to the LG HB45E home entertainment system playing sports and entertainment content. The LD950 particularly went down a storm, getting comments like the “clarity of the screen being better than a cinema experience”, with another journalist saying they felt like they could reach out and touch the characters on screen.

And it wasn’t just Home Entertainment on display, as there was a selection of LG’s handsets on display including the Android running Optimus and Optimus 1, the Town C300 and the Viewty Snap. But it was the new Optimus 7, running the Windows Phone 7 operating system that was of particular interest after its launch on Monday.

The LE8900 LED TV from LG has been showered with accolades including a 4 star review from Home Cinema Choice, 5 stars from What Video & HD TV, a ‘Highly Recommended’ accolade from AVForums, a 5 star review from What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision and a nomination for TV of the year at the T3 Gadget of the Year Awards.

If somehow you remained unconvinced after such a wealth of excellent reviews TechRadar have got their hands on one for a full review. Their verdict? 5 stars of course…

The first thing noted by TechRadar is the inclusion of direct LED backlighting in a TV so slim (a mere 35mm in depth) you would be forgiven for thinking it is edge-lit. And the picture quality does not suffer for being fit into such a stylish and slim exterior, with the black level response, rich colour palette and especially the natural, darker colours all singled out as strengths.

Further highlights picked out by TechRadar include the comprehensive list of calibration aids, including preset calibrations from THX and an official endorsement from the Imaging Science Foundation. This means the TV has been confirmed as suitable for professional calibration to produce optimal results in both dark and bright conditions.

It would be easy to go through the review re-hashing everything TechRadar said, but instead I will let you read the review for yourself via the link below, instead closing with a quote. “Being able to focus solely on its 2D quality and cheaper price point means we can find precious little negative to say about the 47LE8900, leaving us feeling confident that it’s LG’s finest TV yet.”

The 50th IFA just wrapped up in Berlin and it’s safe to say it was a great show with a whole host of new and innovative technology and gadgetry on display. LG had a strong presence launching some great new products as well as showing off some stunning prototypes to let us know what is in store for the future!

31 Inch OLED TV:

Techdigest named LG’s 31” OLED TV “the best Tech of the Show”. This hardly comes as a surprise considering LG are the only manufacturer selling OLED at the moment, the 15” EL9500, a set that will be dwarfed by the eventual arrival of the 31” set. The set measures in at a jaw dropping 29mm in depth making it the slimmest OLED in the world and even brings 3D to OLED for the first time.
Techdigest concluded by saying, “what really won over our eyes and
hearts was the pin-sharp clarity of 2D images and magnificent colour depth. I’ve never been so willing to sit through an episode of Garfield the Cat as I was whilst watching the 31 inch OLED demo, with a contrast ratio that, to quote Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel, could only be described as ‘none-more black’ “.

LEX8 Nano Technology Full LED 3D Ready TV:

The LEX8 uses a completely new type of LCD panel that offers excellent picture quality via LG’s proprietary NANO Lighting Technology, whilst only being 1.25cm in depth. One of the writers from the Gadgets and Gizmos blog was there and said that the colours were really bright and vivid – even under the trade showroom lights. This is a result of an ultra thin layer in front of the direct FULL LED back lighting, complete with microscopic holes that allow light to escape ensuring the brightest picture possible.

LG Smart TV:

Another product on display at IFA this year was LG’s take on Smart TV, internet-linked sets that promise to revolutionise the way people watch TV. Building on LG’s Magic Motion Remote (imagine a Wii remote to navigate your TV menu), Smart TV aims to increase viewing options whilst also simplifying the use of your television.

At the LG booth there were a selection of prototype Smart TV apps on display covering entertainment, education, news and health, whilst LG are also looking into partnerships with a number of content providers to expand this further.

T3 had this to say about the LE8900:

“Despite being an ultra-slim 35mm LG’s Infinia TV doesn’t scrimp on features, with 200Hz mode, Freeview HD and Net Cast internet TV services, including Skype and You Tube. A full LED set, the LG 47LE8900 is eco-friendly, with excellent picture quality.”

Well AVForums have gotten their hands on the 55″ LX9900 for a review, and they gave it an overall ‘recommended’ rating. The strengths of the LX9900 were numerous out of the box ranging from things like the inclusion of built in Freeview HD tuner and 2 pairs of 3D glasses being included, right up to the quality of the ‘out of the box’ cinema settings, good quality 3D playback with most content and excellent black levels with localized dimming. The review was also complimentary of the Magic Motion remote control, stating that it is not merely a gimmick, but actually works effectively.

Techradar recently gave the LG BD750 Blu-ray player a 5 star rating and now the HB965TZ Blu-ray player has received a 5 star review and taken the top prize in a group test with What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision.

The HB965TZ is an all in one speaker and Blu-ray combo offering wireless connectivity and “stylish design”. Up against similar offerings from JVC, Panasonic and Samsung, the LG walks away with the top prize being “a wonderfully rounded, highly capable all-in-one system”.

The strengths of the HB965TZ are listed as “stylish design; built in wi-fi connectivity; punchy, clear sound; colourful, detailed images” resulting in it being the “clear, undisputed winner of this four-way Group Test”.

Read the full review for yourself here

In another Supertest, What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision award the LG LE5900 a 4 star review. The reviewer says the LE5900 is a set “that looks to marry stylish design with myriad features, and of course high performance – a task that LG has plenty of recent form for pulling off”. And it looks like LG have pulled it off again as the review flags the strengths of the set to be “bags of features, with DLNA and NetCast; Freeview HD; stylish design”.

Home Cinema Choice have reviewed the 47-inch LE8900 and gave it a 4 star rating. The reviewer is particularly impressed by the quality of the Full LED picture and the fact this is squeezed into an impressive 3.5cm depth, its responsiveness and use of ease and excellent contrast.

The review concludes saying “the crisp high contrast 47in LCD panel and full LED backlight are winning combo that’s produced the best picture quality we’ve seen on an LG LCD TV.”

What LCD & Plasma Screen have conducted a group test, but a group test with a difference. Instead of the conventional criteria for a review, the televisions were judged on their eco-friendly credentials.

And the good news is that it is worthy of a 5 star rating, meaning you can watch your LE5900 for hours without worrying about the environment (or your electricity bill). The review says “this 42in edge LED panel typically uses 85w in full flow, which only a year ago would have been inconceivable”.

Avatar has had a massive impact on the development of 3D as a technology, introducing a generation to film with an extra dimension. This demand is predicted to continue its meteoric rise this year as 3DTVs for the home hit the shelves in the UK next month in time for the FIFA world cup in South Africa in June.

Why do we need to wear glasses for 3D?

3D works by manipulating the way our eyes perceive images via a technique called stereoscopy.

As the above image shows, stereoscopy works by providing different images to each eye, which combine to create the illusion of depth. Whether the source is cinema projectors, LCD or plasma TVs, or home projectors, there are currently two kinds of glasses – polarized type and shutter-type – that work in different ways to produce the stereoscopic effect.

Why do some people feel dizzy when watching 3D TV?

I’m sure everyone reading this will know someone who raves about 3D as the next big thing, whilst less of you may know someone who says that watching 3D makes them dizzy or nauseous. Well LG have stepped forward to explain why you may be feeling this way whilst watching 3D.

“When buying a TV, consumers typically consider aesthetic features such as screen size, design and thickness, or technical specifications including resolution, contrast rate and response time. When buying a 3D TV, however, such features as light intensity, “crosstalk” and the number of pixels become very important. Crosstalk takes place when any image intended for the right eye “leaks” into the left eye’s image, or vice versa. When this happens, viewers can feel dizzy.“

The good news for all of you who do feel dizzy whilst watching 3D is that glasses free 3D technology is in the pipeline, but it’s not expected for a few years yet.

We caught up with some of our competition winners at our recent 3D football pub event to hear their opinions after the match. For many of them it was their first experience of 3D and they left as 3D fans.

Today LG have officially announced the full range of their 3D portfolio for 2010. Launching in May, the first release will be the LCD LD920 TV. This will be the first passive technology TV to be released in the UK when it is rolled out in pubs across the UK and Ireland allowing viewers to watch Premier League matches broadcast by Sky 3D, prior to the introduction of Sky 3D to homes across the country later in the year.

In addition, this spring, LG will lead the way in home entertainment with the launch of the Full LED 3D ready TV (LX9900) and 3D Blu-ray player (BX580).

The LX9900 uses active shutter technology within the glasses, permitting the use of 1080p meaning each eye gets a full HD image ensuring the best possible picture quality. 3D aside, viewers are still guaranteed the highest possible picture quality with built in Freeview HD, offering five times improved picture quality without a subscription or contract. Viewers also get access to their favourite Internet applications including YouTube, Skype to Skype video calling and weather updates. Combine this with TruMotion 400Hz, Spot Control technology, the ability to stream information from your PC or mobile directly into your living room and house it all in a super slim Infinia design that looks stunning even when not turned on.

A TV of this magnitude deserves a Blu-ray player to match. Luckily the BX580 offers so much more than your average Blu-ray player, being fully compatible with 3D Blu-ray, normal Blu-ray as well as DVDs. The BX580 also includes several features to make accessing information easier, like wireless technology to access Internet applications or stream content directly from your PC.

Whilst you’re waiting for the release of 3D in the home, why not experience it for yourself with Sky and the LG LD920 3DTV, available for commercial use across the country.

Sky confirmed at this year’s CES that Sky 3D – its forthcoming 3D TV service and Europe’s first 3D TV channel – will be compatible across LG’s entire range of 3D TVs. Sky 3D, which launches in pubs and clubs this April and then to more than 2.1 million Sky’s Sky+HD homes later this year, will work across all passive and active 3D TVs which are due to come to market, including all those developed by LG.

Stephen Gater, Head of Marketing LG Home Entertainment Company, commented, “We’ve seen such enormous interest and excitement from consumers around 3D TV that we choose to bring the LX9900 televisions to the shelves ahead of schedule, to meet the demand. The new active 3D TV, matched with the 3D Blu-ray player, means our customers can experience the wonder, excitement and thrills generated by 3D programming and movies from the comfort of their own sofa.”

Brian Lenz, Director of Product Design and TV Product Development at Sky, comments: “Alongside innovative TV manufacturing partners, we’re looking forward to helping the UK take a global lead in bringing 3D into the home. Whether active or passive, Sky 3D will be compatible with LG’s entire range of 3D screens, so we look forward to our Sky+HD customer base having a simple and straightforward way to experience the wonder of 3D TV.”

LG have released the models and specifications for their 2010 Television Range, covering LED, Plasma, OLED and LCD sets. The range includes the highly anticipated LX9900 LED 3DTV, which is available in both 47 and 55 inch sizes.

The LX9900 (pictured) uses the active shutter system, rather than the passive as used in the LG LD920 3DTV, which is solely being released for commercial use. The benefit of the active shutter system is that it permits the use of 1080p (progressive image) which means that each eye gets a full HD image.

For the full specifications of the LX9900 click here

Another key feature of this year’s range is the Skype to Skype video calling that comes with LG’s Netcast system which was one of the big talking points at CES 2010. NetCast™ Entertainment Access brings the best of the internet directly to your TV, without the need for a computer. Users can enjoy free youtube, weather forecasts, online photo sharing as well as free Skype to Skype video conferencing from the comfort of your living room sofa. Netcast is accessed by connecting LG NetCast compatible TVs to your home network either via the built-in Ethernet port or using an optional WiFi USB dongle. All LG TVs with NetCast will also be ready for future online services which can be updated directly onto your LG TV.

Keep checking back to the Official LG Blog UK as we will look at more of this years television range in depth over the coming weeks.

You may have seen this TV on our most recent ad campaign for ‘Seamless entertainment’. We are now really excited to see that people are loving this new 42″ single layer* (no plastic frame) LED TV and some of the press have given it rave reviews.

Home Cinema Magazine has rated it as one of their favourite 40-42″ LED screens and write:

“Although it’s frameless chassis is undeniably alluring, it’s the specification list that will have prospective buyers chomping at the bit to get hold of this one.”

Rik Henderson of Home Cinema Magazine rated it as a “Best Buy” and gave the TV 4/5 for performance, 5/5 for design, 5/5 features and 5/5 overall. In the review he mentions that the TV has “exceptional picture quality and is a master at picking out fine detail in shadows.”

Both articles also mention how easy the TV is to set up – even for the technically challenged. A favourite feature is the ‘Picture Wizard’ which has a guide for brightness and contrast levels for the type of programme you are watching, and which lets you save different settings. The TV’s USB 2.0 media playing capability, 100 HZ processing, Bluetooth connectivity and eco modes are also highlighted, as well as its super duper thinness.

Rock on, these babies are selling for £999.00 at Currys, and it’s great to hear people saying that they are well worth the investment. Sounds like Life’s Good with the 42SL9000…

*Single Layer means that the screen goes right to the edge without a plastic bezel. There is an 8.5mm black line around the edge of the TV, but it is behind the screen.

We are going to document some exciting TV information on LGs launches for the year ahead tomorrow. So here is a reminder of some of the key definitions:

Plasma: 42-60″ TVs, perfect for fast sport viewing & movies due to the the deep black level. There is zero haze due to the spot bulb lighting the pixels.

LCD: 19-55″ TVs. Big back light. Good viewing depth, best for gaming & general entertainment (soaps & dramas).

LED: Much slimmer TVs. More energy efficient. Edge lighting – far better contrast bright levels & colour levels. (Nature programmes, movies)

OLED: Individual lighting behind pixels, amazing colour contrast and viewing detail. The thinnest selection of TVs (down to 0.25cms). Premium TV viewing experience – insane slimness.

Today we got to see for the first time the new family of Infinia premium viewing TVs. This range includes Full LED Slim TVs and accessories. The Full LED Slim TVs work with “detailed local dimming of up to 240 addressable segments, resulting in an HDTV that provides deeper black levels and uniform picture quality – this typically can not be achieved on an ultra-thin set.” (This basically means far better contrast between dark and light.) Aside from OLED, these puppies really are the crème de la crème of TV viewing for the year ahead:

All have wireless Internet connectivity

All are HDTVs and will allow HD content on whichever platform suits the viewer: Freeview HD, Freesat, Satellite or cable plus Sky’s new 3D service

The majority is single layer – which means no external plastic frame/bezel

All have a slim design, seamless connectivity and limitless content options

The Full LED 9 series are a super thin 2.3cm/0.92″ depth (see pictures!!)

The Infinia range will be available from April 2010 and also includes other premium LED and Plasma models

LG has just announced the launch of three new TVs at IFA 2009, offering consumers the widest choice of stylish technology. Whether buyers are looking for a minimalist look such as the SEAMLESS designed SL9000 (Edge LED TV) and SL8000 (Super Slim LCD TV), or state-of-the-art backlight LED technology as featured in the LH9000, LG continues to show that it is at the forefront of TV design and innovation.

The new range of TVs will debut at this year’s IFA 2009 show in Berlin 4 – 9 September [Messe Berlin GmbH. Hall 11.2, stand 101].

Designer TVs to suit everyone – SEAMLESS Edge LED, Full LED & SEAMLESS LCD

The LH9000’s LED backlight technology uses hundreds of LED elements to individually brighten and dim the image that is on the screen – for improved realism, deeper blacks, and a smoother transition between different shades. The backlight helps to create an impressive contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 and incorporates Picture Wizard technology for viewers to have precise control over the picture they are watching, while TruMotion 200Hz techonology reduces image blur, perfect for watching fast-paced sport and action scenes.

All three TVs comprise four HDMI connections to enable users to hook up a wider range of devices such as games consoles, home cinema systems, and set-top boxes. All models are compatible with the latest file formats, which means, that viewing of JPEG, MP3, and DivX HD (movies in HD), is a basic plug and play exercise via the USB 2.0 port. These TVs also have integrated Bluetooth for the times when you don’t want to disturb those around you, and quietly take in the action through a set of compatible Bluetooth headphones. Or alternatively, for streaming music and pictures to the big screen wirelessly.

LG’s Environmental credentials
The new TVs all score highly in terms of their environmental credentials – the LH9000 is one of the most environmentally sound products on the market, thanks to the energy efficiency of LED technology and the TV’s ability to dim or turn off individual elements in the backlight – using up to 75 per cent less power than most similarly sized TVs.

The SL9000 has five distinct energy saving modes and has a 40 per cent power consumption saving when compared to similar-sized LCD TVs.

All models including the SL8000 feature the LG Intelligent Sensor II, which reduces energy consumption by analysing the light in the room and automatically optimises the TVs picture settings. The SL8000 series is also certified by the Energy Saving Trust to save you money off your electricity bills.

George Mead, TV marketing manager, LG UK concludes,

We want LG to be the top name in home entertainment. To make this happen, we have listened closely to our customers and invested heavily in product development. Our latest range of TVs that we have launched at IFA is a testament to our accomplishments and the new standards that we are setting in home entertainment. These TVs look better than any others on the market and the viewing experience and environmental credentials they provide is second to none.
