LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced fourth quarter 2011 consolidated revenues of KRW 13.81 trillion (USD 12.05 billion) with an operating profit of KRW 23 billion (USD 20 million). Quarter-on-quarter revenue growth reflected strong performance in home entertainment and home appliances with improved operating profit in the mobile and TV businesses.

Unaudited consolidated financial results, based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the period ending Dec. 31, 2011, showed a net loss of KRW 112 billion (USD 97.73 million) in the quarter, primarily due to a loss on investments in affiliated companies and net financial expense.

Full-year 2011 consolidated revenues reached KRW 54.26 trillion (USD 48.97 billion). Despite a 2011 net loss of KRW 433 billion (USD 391 million), operating profits improved significantly to KRW 280 billion (USD 253 million) from KRW 176 billion (USD 153 million) for full-year 2010.

The LG Home Entertainment Company shipped a record high 8.8 million flat panel TVs from October to December, increasing revenues 17.6 percent from the previous quarter to KRW 6.31 trillion (USD 5.5 billion). While quarterly sales declined modestly from the 2010 period, a strong 2011 holiday season and more premium product mix led by CINEMA 3D TV resulted in an operating profit of KRW 150 billion (USD 130.9 million) in the fourth quarter of 2011. Full-year 2011 home entertainment sales were KRW 22.38 trillion (USD 20.2 billion) with operating profit of KRW 423 billion (USD 382 million). For 2012, LG will continue strengthening its position in 3D and Smart TVs with a broadened line of TVs with Cinema Screen design and quality content.

The LG Mobile Communications Company improved its position in the fourth quarter with operating profits of KRW 12 billion (USD 10 million) and sales of KRW 2.78 trillion (USD 2.42 billion) on the strength of premium smartphones such as Optimus LTE (Long Term Evolution). For full-year 2011, the company posted sales of KRW
11.69 trillion (USD 10.55 billion), a decline of 9.9 percent from 2010. For 2012, the company will continue to strengthen its position by focusing on strategic markets with expanded smartphone line-up led by LTE smartphones.

The LG Home Appliance Company posted record-high quarterly sales of KRW 2.99 trillion (USD 2.6 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2011 with strong growth in Korea, the U.S. and developing countries with more energy-efficient products. Modestly lower operating profit of KRW 65 billion (USD 57 million) in the fourth quarter reflected increased raw material costs and unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Total 2011 home appliance sales were KRW 11.11 trillion (USD 10.03 billion) with operating profit of KRW 295 billion (USD 266 million). New energy efficient appliances being introduced around the world this year are expected to contribute to 2012 revenue growth.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solutions Company reported sales of KRW 680 billion (USD 593 million) in the fourth quarter, essentially flat with the 2010 fourth quarter. An operating loss of KRW 38 billion (USD 33 million) was attributed to negative macroeconomic issues and product mix weakness in developing markets. For full-year 2011, the company recorded air conditioning and energy solutions revenues of KRW 4.56 trillion (USD 4.11 billion) and operating profit of KRW 58 billion (USD 52 million). The company is increasing its focus on high-efficiency air conditioning systems to help drive sales in 2012.

LOVEFiLM Instant is already available on 175 devices including gaming consoles, a growing number of Internet-connected TV sets, Blu-ray players, tablets and PCs. The agreement with LG further extends LOVEFiLM’s offering into the direct-to-TV market and into even more homes across the UK.

LG’s share of the global 3D TV market increased from 7.6 percent during the first quarter of 2011 to 14 percent by September. Step one is to download and install it from either your Android or iOS app store. Just search for “LG Remote App”. It’s free.

Step two, you need to pair the app with your LG TV. As long as your smart phone and smart TV are connected to your home Wi-Fi network, this is a snap. After you launch the LG TV Remote App, it will automatically scan for your TV. Once it finds it, just tap “connect” and watch the TV for a code to appear. Plug that in, and you’re good to go.

Search, Connect, Pair!

1. Volume, Channel, and “My CH”

The volume and channel changers are self-explanatory. Just use one of the two sets of rockers that appear on your phone, and swipe up and down to adjust. What’s really cool is the “My CH” feature, which lets you create a list of your favorite channels that you can surf back and forth between. Whenever you’re on a channel you like, just tap My CH and add it to your favorites. Once it’s saved, you can always go back with just a few simple touches of the finger.

2. Touch Pad

This menu works like a normal touch pad on a notebook computer. Just put your finger on the smartphone screen and the Magic Motion pointer will appear on your TV. Now, we’re not saying that it’ll replace your Magic Motion Remote Control, but it definitely gets the job done in a very admirable way.

3. Buttons

Even if you don’t really get into the functionality of our Magic Motion Remote Control, you can go old school with this feature, which replicates all your key navigation functions of the standard LG remote that comes with the TV.

4. Settings.

Use these to customize the app, change your vibration effects, sound effects, and even your touchpad sensitivity.

5. The QWERTY Keyboard
This is probably our favorite feature on the app, because it’s perfect for surfing the web and doing searches from your couch. And it’s super intelligent. Whenever you are surfing or using Smart TV menus that require keyboard input, the LG Remote App realizes it and launches a keyboard on your smartphone. All from within the app! LG has developed a Smart TV art museum app that allows LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV owners to enjoy and display over 600,000 artworks from Europe’s most famous museums and galleries, such as the Louvre and the National Gallery of London. The TV app, MUSEUM, was developed in collaboration with PureScreens, a French audiovisual content producer.

Optimized for viewing on LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, MUSEUM isn’t just a streaming collection of fine arts images. MUSEUM organizes 600,000 works of art from approximately 200 European museums and galleries into exhibitions themed around a specific artist, collection or subject matter. Artwork available in MUSEUM include masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Vincent Van Gogh.

Four new exhibitions, consisting of 40 artworks, will be added each month. Each exhibition consists of 10 artworks and runs for 20 minutes. Exhibitions can be paused to display a single work for a maximum period of 24 hours. The high definition (HD) exhibitions are accompanied by expert audio commentary in English and French languages.

Quick refresher if you didn’t catch our last post on this. The Plasma Pentouch TV uses the magic of plasma TV panels to communicate with a wireless stylus pen that you use to draw freely on screen. Using unique and powerful software installed on your TV, the TV detects the plasma light source to determine the precise location of your pen and recreate the line you’re imagining.

Snap the photo with your smartphone, beam it via email to the server, and then download it to your PC where you’ll recreate the image using some graphics program before popping it into a PowerPoint presentation for next week’s big sales meeting.

Not bad. But what if there was a better way, something that lets you be even more creative and that fosters better team collaboration at the same time? LG’s new Pentouch TV can accomplish both, while at the same time even handling mundane tasks like helping you to take and share meeting notes.

Many of them may have caught wind that this feature was coming and they were itching to try it out for themselves. They are all used to playing shooter games, racing games, and other multiplayer console games on a split-screen with friends and have probably always wondered if their buddy was cheating with a sneak peak or two.

1) No Need to Worry about Dizziness
If the degree of convergence is not set correctly, users may experience dizziness due to the ‘crosstalk effect’. LG has thus succeeded in preventing the ‘crosstalk effect’ through an auto convergence technology. This technology provides maximum level of depth and eliminates possible dizziness. Only LG Optimus 3D offers protection for its users of the five similar devices. Although FujiFilm’s FinePix REAL 3D W3 camera serves a similar function, it requires manual operation for every shot and thus comes with its own inconveniences and difficulties for consusers.

2) Misalignment Correction Technology
Mist, excessive heat, humidity as well as slight bumps can cause misalignment of the two cameras, resulting in negative effects on the 3D image quality.

Other 3D devices such as Sharp’s 3D smartphone, Aquos SH-12C, and FujiFilm’s 3D digital camera, FinePix REAL 3D W3, are equipped with a misalignment calibration function as it is a manual setting that needs to be adjusted for every condition. On the other hand, HTC EVO 3D and Sony’s 3D digital camera, the Mobile HD Snap Camera, applies a set factory calibration which cannot be changed after purchase.

Distinction of LG’s Optimus 3D set itself apart from 3D cameras as the only 3D device installed with a self-correcting technology on a real-time basis. It therefore provides its users with optimal 3D image quality without the hassle or inconveniences of other devices.

Image and Video Resolution
Furthermore, the LG Optimus 3D is the only 3D phone that can take 3D photos with 3.2 megapixel qualities. In comparison, the 3D resolution for HTC’s EVO 3D and Sharp’s Aquos SH-12C is only 2 megapixels. Of the devices being compared, the only one that offers better quality images and videos than the LG Optimus 3D is the 3D digital camera by FujiFilm which offers 10 megapixel resolutions both in 2D and 3D.

The Festival features a LG booth, where visitors are encouraged to play 3D games on LG’s various 3D products, enabling visitors to experience first-hand LG’s immersive 3D world. Featured products spanned CINEMA 3D TVs, monitors, and projectors to Optimus 3D smartphones and 3D sound-equipped home theater systems. In particular, with the Optimus 3D, gamers worldwide were able to experience LG’s own 2D to 3D game conversion engine.

The types of venues selected for the Festival varied by country. In order to accommodate larger crowds, shopping malls were chosen for Russia, India and Chile. In order to give visitors a comfortable feel of how home entertainment should be, Festival visitors in Dubai interacted with various LG 3D products in Living Room Video Game Cafes. In Brazil and Germany, LG opted for a road show format, hoping to generate curiosity amongst the countries’ demanding consumers.

‘Gamescom’ is the biggest games and entertainment show in the world and was held in Colon, Germany from Aug.17-21. At Germany’s Gamescom, the world’s largest gaming and entertainment exhibition, LG introduced an array of gaming and gaming-related devices which were used for 3D games produced by the likes of Blizzard Entertainment. LG’s 3D products were also hooked up to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

In Russia, LG set up the Festival at Mega Khimki, one of the largest shopping malls in Moscow. Several celebrity Russian gamers and national broadcasting companies took part in the Festival which featured a gaming tournament called ‘1C SoftKlab.’ The glasses-free Optimus 3D proved to be a big hit among Russian visitors, a top of the line smartphone that previews the future of larger screen 3D TVs.

Meanwhile, the Festival in Dubai has been a pro-longed one. Having begun in late July, the Festival is expected to culminate in the Mega Championship on January 6 of next year. Leading up to the championship finale, LG will continue to host daily, weekly and monthly contests in Dubai. The contest winners have been awarded prizes, which has certainly contributed to generating popularity. So far, t-shirts have been handed out at smaller contests, while some of the larger ones have awarded 42-inch CINEMA 3D TVs and other LG 3D products.

Celebrities and entertainers were invited to LG’s 3D Game Festival in Russia. Various media events and performances demonstrated the potential that 3D could bring to gaming.


In Dubai, LG has jointly worked with ‘Living Rooms Video Games Cafés where users experience a true 3D gaming environment at home. The championships events have proven very popular, and organizers say the city is gaining more interest in home 3D gaming.

Overall, LG’s 3D Game Festival has served a meaningful purpose, exposing the latest industry-leading 3D products and technologies to users. In addition to LG’s immersive display panels and dazzling 3D visuals, visitors across the world were able to witness LG’s attempts to make 3D more convenient, as evidenced in LG’s 3D glasses. Canary Wharf was the backdrop to the launch of the Optimus 3D phone on July 14, when The Only Way is Essex stars Mark Wright and James Argent rubbed shoulders with besuited workers to check out the handset’s capabilities in the flesh. If you’ve got one of fantastic Optimus 3D phones or perhaps an LG Smart Cinema3D TV here are their 3D antics!

In addition to letting people get up close and personal with the Optimus 3D, the Play Hub gives them the chance to pose for photos with some LG models and to compete to set the fastest time in a racing game on the phone.

And complementing the real-world demonstrations of the phone at these events, our ‘Play With Me’ Facebook app has been up and running for a few days now. This allows users who ‘like’ the app to create a personalised – and quite possibly cheeky – video message to share with friends.

The app was designed to draw on the relationships that people have with their phones – and their reactions to them – to play to the light-hearted side of users, and to encourage them to share their creations through Facebook and Twitter. It features the talents of two models – Carly and Josh – who each have a bank of clips to offer the user, from the straightforward building blocks of sentences, to rather more tactile verbs (such as ‘pinch’ or ‘vibrate’). Canary Wharf was the backdrop to the launch event on 14 July, when besuited workers got to try their hands on the handsets in the pods while some familiar faces from TV phenomenon The Only Way is Essex - Mark Wright and James Argent – lent their street cred to proceedings.

After this, the travelling Play Hub to play with the Optimus 3D in various scenarios – with a Harley-Davidson for photo posing, and room for gamers to compete to set the fastest time of the session – was camped out for several days at Cavendish Square, just off Oxford Street.

And last weekend, the Play Hub turned up at the Ultimate Street Car event at Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire, where stacks of people turned out to mount the Harley for a pic.

This week the Play Hub is due to return to Canary Wharf, while later in the month it will be heading to Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens, with a further stop back in the capital’s Broadgate Circle in September.

And in addition to these events, there have been roving teams heading out most days taking the phones round the country by van – supported by a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #play3D. Meanwhile, supporting all this activity, other teams have intrepidly set out on foot, taking the handsets into the nightspots of the country.

The two winners were Richard and Adam, who each received a Cinema 3D TV and a year’s subscription to Sky HD, the package that comes with the Sky 3D channel. We caught up with them after they had some time to get to grips with their new TVs and had a little chat with each of them to find out what they thought of their new toy.

Richard had previously been a staunch advocate of Plasma technology, but the quality of the 2D image changed his mind, swaying him in favour of LED.  He was also particularly impressed with Smart TV, rating the iPlayer and YouTube functions highly due to the clear picture and absence of buffering, even with his low-speed broadband connection.

All of this before Richard had even turned on 3D – saying he was “thrilled with it” in reference to the 3D experience.

Adam was our second winner to get his living room kitted out with a brand new LG Cinema 3D TV. He loved the sense of event that was rekindled amongst the family, as they sat down together to watch a 3D film. Co-founded by two-time Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro, the Tribeca Film Festival promotes independent-minded productions from around the world. This year’s event wrapped on the 1^st of May, having shown some 5,600 films and documentaries from more than 40 countries at the New York Event.

Star turns this year included Cameron Crowe’s “The Union”, his first film in six years, and Will Ferrell, who lent his comedic talents to the low-budget comedy “Everything Must Go.”

Always one to promote smaller independent features, there were also exciting projects from rising talents, including productions from South Africa, Norway and across the United States tackling everything from avant-garde poets to children with photographic memories.

Always eager to help the talents of tomorrow, LG provided students from Chicago’s Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy with equipment and technical support to help them produce a series of shorts utilising our latest Cinema 3D™ technology. These shots debuted at this year’s festival on a series of Cinema 3D™ TVs and Blu-ray™ players in venues throughout lower Manhattan.

“As a student it’s important to be able to learn how to shoot 3D, how to edit 3D, how to master 3D, because it’s the way of the future,” said Stephen Fletcher, a student at the academy.

Standout shorts submitted by the students included “The Flying Wallendas Highwire Family”, a short that perfectly captured the tension of live high wire performances in the 3D format. Viewers also enjoyed an animated short, “the Universe of 3D” which showed how LG’s 2D logo could be transformed into a compelling visual experience.

The aim of the joint project with LG and the Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy is aiming to educate a new era of filmmakers in the skills needed to work with 3D with an inventive and daring edge.

At the ripe old age of 10, the Tribeca Festival has matured into one of the leading outlets for creative, leftfield filmmaking in the United States. As 3D moves from the creative fringes to the mainstream, it’s thrilling to know that some of the cream of the country’s cinematic talent will be fulfilling De Niro’s vision, and discovering just how powerful 3D can be.

With 1500 guests in attendance, LG’s Cinema 3D™ TV was unveiled, which combined the first officially certified “Flicker-Free” picture in the industry with comfortable, battery-free, lightweight glasses, brighter picture, more flexible viewing positions and a wide viewing angle. The 1,500 guests comprised of customers, retailers and top media from across Europe who were treated to a 3D screening of ‘Rio’ on the world’s largest 3D screen – measuring in at 27mx11m. LG have been quizzing Britons on the current technology hot topic – switching to 3D in the home. In total 2000 people were quizzed and the results pointed towards Britons being keen on the uptake of 3D, with over half of those questioned saying the next TV they bought would be 3D capable.

The results also discovered that it was sporting events that were the most likely to tempt people to the switch, with 37% being swayed by the opportunity to watch the 2012 London Olympics in 3D. This beat the 25% who said that they would be tempted to switch for Euro 2012 – although whether this was affected by England’s dire performance in South Africa last year was not asked.

In the same survey Britons were also quizzed as to which celebrities they would most like to see in 3D. It looks like the nation’s hearts belong to Kelly Brook as she came out on top with 19%, beating Emma Watson who had 9% and Kate Middleton with 7%. Turning this around those surveyed were also asked who they would least like to see, and the results show that Katie Price is less popular than Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Kruger, as Price stormed to a win with nearly a third of all votes.

Avatar redefined 3D technology and showed the world that 3D was here and here to stay.  In fact Cameron is a staunch advocate of 3D home entertainment too, predicting it will become a standard feature on TV sets around the world. In a recent keynote speech at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), held in Las Vegas, Cameron said he believed the less expensive polarized glasses would accelerate the adoption of 3D technology into the home.

Cameron’s comments came at a time when the passive Vs active debate is going strong, with the first year of 3D in the home having been dominated by active technology. But LG are leading the charge to challenge this with their Cinema 3D technology (passive) that was launched at CES 2011. Cinema 3D addresses some major shortcomings of the active 3D TV type – practically eliminating flicker and crosstalk that can cause discomfort or even nausea, whilst the comfortable, lightweight glasses won’t get tiresome even during the longest of films. Cinema 3D glasses also cost a fraction of the price of active shutter glasses, starting from just £2 whilst they also do not need recharging.

This week sees the first wave of LG’s new 2011 Home Entertainment Range make it into stores across the UK. If you’re in the market for a 3D TV then you should have a look at the latest What HiFi Sound and Vision magazine. They ran a supertest of 3D TVs with smart capabilities, pitting the 47” LG LW650T against the Hitachi L46VG09, the Sony KDL-46NX713 and the UE46D8000 and the UE46D7000, both from Samsung.

The results? The LG LW650T got full marks, with a 5 star review as well as being named the overall winner! This is a great result for us and reaffirms our belief in the strength of Cinema 3D, with the experience branded “stable, lush and vivid – while avoiding all signs of crosstalk or flicker – the LG is a richly satisfying watch in 3D”

The pros for the set are listed as “great spec, including lots of specs; fine pictures from any source; stress free 3D”. The only negative they come up with is the ergonomics of the Smart TV could be better, but even concede that this is easily remedied with the use of the Magic Motion Remote.

The LG LW650T gets full marks from What HiFi is a post from: LG Blog

One of the first stands you see upon entering the show is our LG stand, replete with our latest Home Entertainment solutions for 2011, our hero range of Cinema 3D TVs and of course our new Smart TV solutions.

Lots of people were impressed by the absence of flicker on our 3D Cinema sets, which are the first to be certified flicker free by Intertek and TUV – two of the most respected inspection and certification bodies in the world. A lot of people also took this opportunity to test the improved viewing angles on the Cinema 3D sets as they wandered around the stand trying wider and wider viewing angles.

Smart TV is also a key product for this year and is naturally on display at the Gadget Show Live. Being demonstrated on the PZ950T Plasma TV, Smart TV provides access to a wide range of apps, a web browser and access to premium content including BBC iPlayer, Google Maps and Acetrax and Viewster movie streaming services. This was demonstrated with the Magic Motion Remote that visitors were keen to try out.

For those not in the market for a new TV, but still keen on getting the Smart TV experience is the ST600 Smart TV upgrader that is also on display at the Gadget Show Live. Offering any TV with an HDMI port access to all of our Smart TV content for a snip at just £100.

Still wowing the crowds is our EL9500 15” OLED TV. At just 2.9mms in depth, the OLED is blessed with glorious picture quality – yet is one that people can’t help but stare at from the side. Though it is thinner than a pound coin so it’s understandable!

If you’re looking for an interactive experience then you are in luck as the LG stand is kitted out with an F1 Racing Simulator developed by industry leaders rFactor. You get to sit in our LG Formula 1 car and race a lap in 3D powered by three D3242P 3D monitors. If this wasn’t incentive enough, whoever has fastest time at the end of the show will walk away with a full 3D cinema Package.

Naturally I didn’t spend all my time on the LG stand and stretched my legs to go on my usual hunt for robots and other tech gems. In this hunt I found many a cool thing including Robot Wars…

LG’s 2011 Cinema 3D™ Lands in the UK is a post from: LG Blog

I recently introduced the LG Home event that took place early last week in a rather decadent townhouse just off Tottenham Court Road in Central London. The idea behind the event was to stage an event where journalists and bloggers could come along and have a look at LG’s new range of Home Entertainment products as they would be set up ideally in the home. There was a number of the LG team on hand to conduct tours around the home and to answer any questions that visitors may have.

I was lucky enough to make it to the house twice in 2 days – first on the Tuesday night for an event populated by forum members from CNET, What Hi-Fi and Stuff.tv, and on the Thursday during the day with some of the users from AVForums.

The Tuesday night event was an opportunity for some lucky forum members to have a sneak preview of LG’s latest range of TVs, as well as grill the team on the ins and outs of the products.

The tour was led by LG’s George Mead and started in the Kitchen where we were given our first glance of Smart TV. Shown on the LW950T, Smart TV is the next generation of that was unveiled by LG at CES in January this year. George talked us through the features of Smart TV, demonstrating some of them along the way including web navigation via an inbuilt browser, apps and catch up TV with iPlayer, before some of us were able to try out the LG Magic Motion Remote that makes navigating the Smart TV menu a doddle with its Nintendo Wii style motion remote.

Smart TV is available on some of the new 2011 range of TVs, but LG are very conscious that it’s rare that someone will buy a new TV each year so they have created the ST600 Smart TV upgrader. Offering all the content available on the in-built Smart TV, the ST600 connects straight up to any TV with a HDMI giving you access to the Smart experience without having to shell out for a new TV. And just to sweeten the experience LG showed this off on the EL9500 OLED! At just 2.9mm thick its depth (or lack of) is almost as enticing as the quality offered by OLED technology.

Next up on the tour was the living room where we all grabbed a seat and enjoyed watching some 3D football on the Sky 3D channel with the 47” LW650T Cinema 3D. George explained the reasons that LG are championing Cinema 3D this year, and as we listened it all became very apparent. The big advantages of Cinema 3D over active shutter technology comes down to the glasses used. With the Cinema 3D range from LG you get 7 pairs of glasses in the box, compared to one in the box with most active shutter offerings. If you damage the glasses or simply want to buy more a new pair of active glasses will set you back around £100, whereas a new pair of Cinema 3D glasses are anywhere between £2 and £15 a pair. Combine this with the fact that Cinema 3D has a wider viewing angle and you have the perfect 3D experience to share. In fact by the end of the night via a quick show hands, only one person still preferred active shutter technology.

After this we headed to the master bedroom where George demonstrated the media hub capabilities of the LG range with the 47” LV550T. Using LG’s bespoke Media Link we saw how easy it was to access content from your home computer on your LG TV. Particularly impressive was the content that the Media Link would find for you online – for example if you were watching a film on your TV from your computer Media Link tracks down a synopsis of the film from Wikipedia as well as a rating from IMDB!

In the attic room we were treated to a spot of 3D gaming, with Call of Duty: Black Ops was played on an Xbox 360 through an LG450U Cinema 3D TV. A lot of the bloggers in attendance were very impressed with the immersive quality of the experience, and I certainly include myself in that!

The event overall was great, allowing these tech fans to get to not only have a good first hand go with LG’s new technology, but to also put their questions to the experts. There were drinks put on and plenty of food and everyone stuck around after to enjoy this and share their thoughts. To round the evening off nicely we had a tournament playing Call of Duty: Black Ops in 3D, with the winner taking away £200 of Selfridges vouchers. I would like to say I walked away victorious, but sadly I was felled in the semi-final, with Sam from the CNET forum walking away victorious.

LW550T

The LW550T Cinema 3D has received a 4.5 out of 5 rating from Techradar and even branded it “smarter than Albert Einstein in a Saville Row suit.”

“Hardcore AV geeks will always remain sniffy about passive 3D screens because of the drop in picture resolution, but LG needn’t be bothered – the 47LW550T is a consumer product, not a reference-grade 3D display. Its 2D performance is rock-solid, its mulitimedia functions are up to speed with the competition and its particular flavour of 3D is convenient and comfortable. Fun for all the family, as the saying goes.”

Home Cinema Choice also reviewed the LW550T and gave it 4 out of 5 as well as a Best Buy rating! They listed some of the positives as “comes with multiple pairs of glasses, half-res images are good and wide viewing angle”. In reference to the Smart TV functionality they say “the smart functions will put this LG at the centre of the home entertainment hub, and the ability to connect to all other media sources should make it pretty much future-proof.”

The LV550T also got the once over from CNET who gave it an impressive 4.5 out of 5. To summarise they said “The 32-inch LG 32LV550T is a great LED TV, offering a cracking array of Internet features, good picture quality and a stylish design. We thoroughly approve.”

I have just returned from a wonderful morning spent at the LG Home. Set in a stunning townhouse just off London’s Tottenham Court Road, the LG Home was set up with the latest technology from the 2011 range including Cinema 3D and Smart TV.

The townhouse was a beautiful home and was only complimented by the stylish designs and great technology on display from LG. Upon entering the reception room visitors were greeted with a 47” LW550T Cinema 3D TV. On the lower ground floor was the kitchen where visitors were treated to a preview of the 55” LW950T NANO 3DTV that was being used to show the Smart TV content. Also on display in the kitchen was the EL9500 15” OLED TV. Measuring in at a stunning 3mm in depth, the EL 9500 was connected to the ST600 Smart TV upgrader. Simply connect the ST600 via HMDI to any TV to experience the best of LG’s Smart TV experience.

Moving up to the living room, guests got to experience Sky 3D content on the LW650T – LG’s flagship Cinema 3DTV for 2011. One of the great advantages of LG’s Cinema 3D is the cost of the glasses when compared to the active shutter technology, with the passive glasses coming in at around £2 a pair compared to near £100 for the active shutter glasses. It’s no surprise then that this really was the hub of the house as visitors congregated and enjoyed some 3D content. Also connected up to the LW6500 was a HX996TS Real 3D Sound Home Cinema System – a home cinema system that emits sound through the top of the speakers additionally, offering a more rounded sound experience.

The master bedroom was kitted out with the LV550T LED TV that was set up with LG’s bespoke Media Link that allows you to create a personal home network with ease, meaning you can comfortably stream content from your laptop to your TV wirelessly. The top floor of the home was a gamers’ paradise, with Call of Duty: Black Ops playing in 3D on a 47” LW450U. Suffice to say this was one of the rooms where people really settled in for the long haul.

All TV’s mentioned will be released in the next few weeks, with the exception of the LW950T that is set for the second half of the year.

If 2010 will be remembered as the year that 3D took the step from the cinema into homes, then 2011 will be remembered as the year that LG pioneered the way with their Cinema 3D technology.

Currently the only manufacturer offering ‘passive’ or Cinema 3D as well as ‘active’ 3D, LG are offering consumers a choice, but the emphasis is certainly on Cinema 3D.  The reason behind this is as a result of a year’s experience of 3D retail under the belt combined with a survey that showed 88% of viewers preferred the Cinema 3D experience to active 3D.

What is Cinema 3D?

The name says it all really – Cinema 3D is the closest you can get to the 3D experience you enjoy in the cinema in your own home. It uses the same glasses that are used in the cinema as the technology is housed within the TV, rather than in the glasses as with active 3D, meaning the glasses are lighter, cheaper and more comfortable weighing in at just 16 grams.

The screens on LG’s range of Cinema 3D TVs are equipped with LG’s proprietary Film-type Patterned Retarder Panel, or FPR for short. This panel optimizes the separation of images into an image for the left eye and one for the right that are then filtered through the Cinema 3D glasses to give the 3D effect.

Putting the advantages of the glasses aside, Cinema 3D also has the advantage of not suffering with flicker that can be seen on some active 3D TVs. LG’s LW6500 Cinema 3D screen that was unveiled at CES 2011 has even been awarded a “Flicker-free” certificate from Intertek and TUV, two of the most-recognised and respected inspection and certification bodies in the world. The LW6500 is the first 3DTV to receive this accolade!

What does the future hold for 3D?

Whilst we can confirm that LG are working on glasses-free 3D, we can also say that this is a product for the future. In the meantime LG’s new range of TVs, including several 3D Cinema options will be released in April, alongside a range of active 3D Plasma screens giving the consumer the choice. Thankfully a bit of research has revealed that options are at hand. This weekend Avatar returns to the IMAX at the BFI on London’s Southbank offering a second chance to view James Cameron’s seminal tale set on the alien world of Pandora on Britain’s biggest screen in stunning 3D. That’s Saturday sorted – as for Sunday, well one of football’s biggest rivalries reignites as Liverpool take on Manchester United at Anfield. And thankfully that humdinger of a match will be broadcast in 3D and will be available to watch at selected pubs up and down the country. Find your nearest 3D pub here.

With all of this great 3D content available you really do need the glasses to match. If you’re not a fan of the Blues Brothers look then you could do worse than sourcing yourself a pair of these sharp sunglasses style 3D glasses from LG that were unveiled at CES 2011. Priced at a very reasonable $20 (around £13) they can be used with the LG 3D TVs that are in use in pubs across the country helping you look suave if, and this is a big if, there are any lovely ladies enjoying the football in your local.

Taking place annually in Las Vegas, CES is the place where the world’s tech titans come together to impress the crowds and dictate the course of technology over the next year. Naturally LG were present and by all accounts it was a good year, with plenty of positive media buzz matched with an impressive haul of CES innovation awards.

In the first of several awards for the Home Entertainment team, LG’s top-of-the-range LW9500 NANO Full LED Active 3DTV scooped a prestigious “Best of Innovations Award”. Packing LG’s unique NANO technology provides an extra bright sheen to its FULL LED backlighting, whilst the LW9500’s ultra-narrow bezel makes it a stylish accompaniment to any room. The LW9500 also won plaudits for its quick and easy access to online content.

Rounding off an impressive Honoree list from LG is a trio of the company’s outstanding steam washers.

The WM3885HCCA is a highly-efficient front load Steamwasher™ based on LG’s Inverter Direct Drive technology, complete with major improvements in capacity, energy, efficiency and durability. This all results in a clean as thorough and delicate as if it had been washed by hand. As both an energy and cost saving advantage the WM3885HCA’s Coldwash™ technology uses cold water to penetrate into fabrics, which when combined with the 6 Motion technology, results in the same washing performance as washing in warm water.

3D gets cultural tomorrow night as Sky’s dedicated 3D channel will be bringing a new artistic element to its line-up with the first screening of an opera in 3D. Donizetti’s Lurezia Borgia has been produced in partnership with the English National Orchestra and will be directed by Mike Figgis, director of Leaving Las Vegas.

And not to leave the sports fans out Sky recently reached the benchmark of screening 100 sporting events in 3D and consequently released the below video showing behind the scenes of a 3D broadcast from the Emirates stadium and the Manchester Evening News Arena.

If Opera doesn’t tickle your fancy and sport isn’t your thing then you may be scratching your head as to what you can enjoy in 3D? Well if you’re a gamer you will be reassured to know that there are a handful of exciting games already available in 3D, with plenty more upcoming. The big 3D release of last year was Gran Turismo 5 released on the PS3. Gran Turismo has long been the standard bearer for die-hard petrol heads looking for realism in their gaming and the inclusion of support for 3D visuals added extra interest to the fifth installment of Polyphony Digital’s series. Realism and detail has always been key to the success of the Gran Turismo series, with the ability to select from over 1000 cars and to adjust engine, suspension and a whole host of other settings, and 3D has certainly added a new layer of realism to the game for the fanboys.

LG also have a wide range of 3D Blu-Ray and Home Cinema systems to help you enjoy your favourite 3D films in the home. The list currently comprises titles including Cloudy With A chance of Meatballs, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Monster House, Resident Evil: Afterlife and the gloriously Trashy Piranha 3D, so there really is something for the whole family.

And the good news for film buffs is that more and more directors are joining Avatar helmer James Cameron by announcing they are shooting in 3D including Martin Scorsese whose new film ‘Hugo Cabaret’ will be out in 3D later this year, whilst Baz Luhrman starts pre-production on F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic ‘The Great Gatsby’ in 3D next month.

Most of the time though, these activities are not naturally connected however it seems likely that the next step is that tablets as well as smart phones are moving toward a natural position when enriching our TV viewing experience. But what will that experience look like? The recent announcement of the Android 3.0 powered G-Slate in the US and the anticipation of Mobile World Congress 2011 next week has got us thinking.
One popular idea is having tablets act as an ‘instant visual recogniser’. Imagine a tablet that could recognise what TV programming you are watching, so that it could deliver you with a host of added content (behind the scenes clips, interviews with the cast, the ability to live chat with other people watching it) – just by simply holding it up towards the TV.

We quite like the idea of tablets (and smartphones) becoming the hardware to gather the content, where the TV will be where we display it, over-the-air and we’ve already start to see examples of this, like the Play-To feature on the LG Optimus 7. With 16-24 year olds already focusing their time more on devices than the TV (58% of their media engagement is through computers/mobiles or other handheld devices) there’s definitely a chance that TV will serve as a larger screen to view small screen device content, like the tablet.

There are many more ideas around, but no clear winning concept as of yet. An indication on the future of the tablet is sure to come next week in Barcelona. Hopefully you’re looking forward to it as much as we are. In the meantime, let us know what you think.
