This week sees the first wave of LG’s new 2011 Home Entertainment Range make it into stores across the UK. If you’re in the market for a 3D TV then you should have a look at the latest What HiFi Sound and Vision magazine. They ran a supertest of 3D TVs with smart capabilities, pitting the 47” LG LW650T against the Hitachi L46VG09, the Sony KDL-46NX713 and the UE46D8000 and the UE46D7000, both from Samsung.

The results? The LG LW650T got full marks, with a 5 star review as well as being named the overall winner! This is a great result for us and reaffirms our belief in the strength of Cinema 3D, with the experience branded “stable, lush and vivid – while avoiding all signs of crosstalk or flicker – the LG is a richly satisfying watch in 3D”

The pros for the set are listed as “great spec, including lots of specs; fine pictures from any source; stress free 3D”. The only negative they come up with is the ergonomics of the Smart TV could be better, but even concede that this is easily remedied with the use of the Magic Motion Remote.

With the 2011 range of LG TVs arriving in stores from next week, you want to know that the TV you buy is as good as it can be for your needs. Well you can hear from the experts as to what they think of our new range thanks to the reviews below!

LW550T

The LW550T Cinema 3D has received a 4.5 out of 5 rating from Techradar and even branded it “smarter than Albert Einstein in a Saville Row suit.”

“Hardcore AV geeks will always remain sniffy about passive 3D screens because of the drop in picture resolution, but LG needn’t be bothered – the 47LW550T is a consumer product, not a reference-grade 3D display. Its 2D performance is rock-solid, its mulitimedia functions are up to speed with the competition and its particular flavour of 3D is convenient and comfortable. Fun for all the family, as the saying goes.”

Home Cinema Choice also reviewed the LW550T and gave it 4 out of 5 as well as a Best Buy rating! They listed some of the positives as “comes with multiple pairs of glasses, half-res images are good and wide viewing angle”. In reference to the Smart TV functionality they say “the smart functions will put this LG at the centre of the home entertainment hub, and the ability to connect to all other media sources should make it pretty much future-proof.”

A PDF of the review is available for viewing here

LV550T

The LV550T also got the once over from CNET who gave it an impressive 4.5 out of 5. To summarise they said “The 32-inch LG 32LV550T is a great LED TV, offering a cracking array of Internet features, good picture quality and a stylish design. We thoroughly approve.”

In the December issue of What Hi-Fi Magazine features a group review for 3D TVs entitled the ‘Ultimate 3D Super Test’.

The LG 50PX990 won the 3D Supertest with an excellent 5 star review, beating off 11 models including tough competition from Samsung, Sony, Phillips and Panasonic.

The reviewer brands the PX990 a “smooth and good looking” plasma that not only looks more expensive than it is, but also has the performance to make good on its specifications. He goes on to note that the black levels are impressive in both depth and details, whilst the clean whites help make the LG PX990 the standout 3D TV on the market. It is on Blu-ray where the PX990’s strengths are most evident, with colours remaining striking throughout.

The review concludes with the verdict “at worst competent, and at best very good indeed, the LG’s persuasive in the extreme”.

The full group review is available here

Steve Withers at AVForums has reviewed LG’s 50-inch PX990 active 3D Plasma TV, the world’s first THX certified 3D TV.

Steve picked up on many positive aspects to the PX990, commending the design, display menus, picture quality and features amongst others. Also flagged is the improved layout of the remote, saying “The supplied remote is the latest iteration of the standard glossy black LG design and personally I really like it. The remote is sensibly laid out, even more so now that the button for the EPG is better positioned, which suggests that LG have been listening to our feedback. The remote is also comfortable to hold, has back light illumination and is intuitive to use with buttons for all the key controls including Menu, Guide, NetCast and 3D.”

The review concludes by saying “LG continues to be at the technological forefront and has produced another exceptional display, that pushes the envelope whilst still adhering to industry standards. The 2D performance is exceptional and in the absence of any industry standards, the THX 3D certification represents the closest we currently have to a reference. I was also pleased to see that LG has clearly been listening to feedback and has addressed many of the issues that I raised in my LE8900 review. The PX990 has a few minor issues and LG still hasn’t manage to produce the deeper blacks that some of their competitors are capable of but they are still very good and better than any LCD display. Overall the PX990 represents an excellent combination of 2D and 3D performance and coupled with it wonderful build quality and design, as well as its excellent video processing and advanced calibration controls, I am happy to award a Highly Recommended badge”

Christmas is something that I have sadly outgrown, however the term ‘like a kid at Christmas’ was certainly an appropriate term for my reaction when the new LG Optimus 7 landed on my desk last week. The handset uses Microsoft’s brand new Windows Phone 7 OS and is packed full of features, some exclusive to Microsoft’s OS and some exclusive to LG.

We have put together a short video introducing the LG Optimus 7, as well as showing off a number of the great features on the handset including Voice-to-Text and ScanSearch that are both exclusive to the LG handset.

Last week Techradar also got their hands on the LG Optimus 7 for a typically in depth review. Their verdict was a 4 star rating, as they singled out the LG exclusive panorama mode and ScanSearch as highlights.

The LG Optimus 7 handset is currently available in the UK exclusively from Vodafone.

T3 had this to say about the LE8900:

“Despite being an ultra-slim 35mm LG’s Infinia TV doesn’t scrimp on features, with 200Hz mode, Freeview HD and Net Cast internet TV services, including Skype and You Tube. A full LED set, the LG 47LE8900 is eco-friendly, with excellent picture quality.”

OLED has been a buzzword for a few years now, heralded as THE technology that will revolutionize home entertainment. Aside from Sony’s 11inch offering that was launched 2 years ago (and is subsequently no longer in production) there has been little in the way of OLED available for the consumer market. Well LG’s commitment to new technologies strikes again with the arrival of the 15inch EL9500 OLED, in selected stores now!

You may well be asking yourself not only is this technology any good, but is this TV any good? Well according to AVForums it’s excellent!

Measuring in at a ridiculously super-slim 3mm in depth you would be forgiven for thinking that OLED is a one trick pony (albeit a skinny pony). But the great thing about OLED is that, not only is it a super slim technology, but it also offers some of the best picture quality that I have ever set eyes on. In fact in Phil Hinton’s review for AVForums the EL9500 gets the ‘reference’ rating (which essentially means that it is flawless and should be a benchmark for all manufacturers) in terms of its rating for Contrast ratio/dynamic range, black level and calibrated greyscale.

In his conclusion Phil Hinton says “It feels like it was a few years ago now when I was last excited to this degree with a TV display” before saying “this little OLED TV offers a real step forward in terms of picture quality and comes as standard with a slim design”.

I finally managed to get my hands on the new LG Viewty Snap phone and have been putting it through its paces!

One of the biggest selling points of the Viewty Snap is the use of it as a quality multimedia phone – with a 5mp camera complete with Optic-all zoom so you don’t lose picture quality as you zoom in. Build on this with an LED flash and good quality video recorder and you have a decent camera. The pictures below were taken using the camera, the second photo using the zoom.

The social network feature offers a dedicated connection to a wide range of social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Flickr, Picasa and Orkut. The push email is also a good addition to the handset and was easy to set up and use.

The menu on the phone is the standard LG S-Class UI and is as easily navigable to a newcomer as it is to a veteran. The inclusion of a shortcut button to your favourite apps on the homescreen is a nice addition and offers the scope to personalize the phone to best suit your needs.

This is one of the cheapest touchscreen phones on the market and the 5mp camera is enough to set it apart from any competitors like the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic (which only has a 2mp camera). It really excels as an easy to use multimedia phone with one of the better cameras for it’s price range, and the ability to expand the memory to 8gb is sure to be another selling point.

Well AVForums have gotten their hands on the 55″ LX9900 for a review, and they gave it an overall ‘recommended’ rating. The strengths of the LX9900 were numerous out of the box ranging from things like the inclusion of built in Freeview HD tuner and 2 pairs of 3D glasses being included, right up to the quality of the ‘out of the box’ cinema settings, good quality 3D playback with most content and excellent black levels with localized dimming. The review was also complimentary of the Magic Motion remote control, stating that it is not merely a gimmick, but actually works effectively.

Techradar recently gave the LG BD750 Blu-ray player a 5 star rating and now the HB965TZ Blu-ray player has received a 5 star review and taken the top prize in a group test with What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision.

The HB965TZ is an all in one speaker and Blu-ray combo offering wireless connectivity and “stylish design”. Up against similar offerings from JVC, Panasonic and Samsung, the LG walks away with the top prize being “a wonderfully rounded, highly capable all-in-one system”.

The strengths of the HB965TZ are listed as “stylish design; built in wi-fi connectivity; punchy, clear sound; colourful, detailed images” resulting in it being the “clear, undisputed winner of this four-way Group Test”.

Read the full review for yourself here

In another Supertest, What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision award the LG LE5900 a 4 star review. The reviewer says the LE5900 is a set “that looks to marry stylish design with myriad features, and of course high performance – a task that LG has plenty of recent form for pulling off”. And it looks like LG have pulled it off again as the review flags the strengths of the set to be “bags of features, with DLNA and NetCast; Freeview HD; stylish design”.

The full review is available here

Home Cinema Choice have reviewed the 47-inch LE8900 and gave it a 4 star rating. The reviewer is particularly impressed by the quality of the Full LED picture and the fact this is squeezed into an impressive 3.5cm depth, its responsiveness and use of ease and excellent contrast.

The review concludes saying “the crisp high contrast 47in LCD panel and full LED backlight are winning combo that’s produced the best picture quality we’ve seen on an LG LCD TV.”

The comprehensive review is available in its entirety here

What LCD & Plasma Screen have conducted a group test, but a group test with a difference. Instead of the conventional criteria for a review, the televisions were judged on their eco-friendly credentials.

And the good news is that it is worthy of a 5 star rating, meaning you can watch your LE5900 for hours without worrying about the environment (or your electricity bill). The review says “this 42in edge LED panel typically uses 85w in full flow, which only a year ago would have been inconceivable”.

The great reviews for LG’s technology keep rolling in as Techradar award the BD570 media streamer an excellent 5 stars and ask the ultimate question, ‘is it a media streamer that plays Blu-rays, or vice versa?

The review highlights the quality of the BD570 as both a media player and as a Blu-ray player, all in a small shell. It is assessed on its ability to playback a wide range of media files including avi, .DivX, .mpg, .mkv, .mp4, .wma, .jpg, .jpeg and .png, Blu-ray, DVD and even audio and passes all tests emphatically.

The closing comment of the review states “The LG570 is basically two products in one slimline chassis and as such can be considered excellent value; its integration of both physical media and file streaming gives it distinct advantages over dedicated products.”

The full review can be read here

What Video & HD TV have given their 5 star best buy award to the 47-inch LE8900, with slick design, impressive contrast and vivid backlight listed as the real positives.

The review is broken down into catergories, with the LE8900 getting 5 stars for picture, ease of use and value, and 4 stars for features.

The review concludes by saying “the Infinia design really shines with this high performance full LED panel behind it”.

AVForums have reviewed the 47-inch LE8900 LCD TV and given it a highly recommended commendation.

The typically comprehensive review from AVForums takes literally everything into account to give a full and fair review, including design, menus and set-up, features, measured results of the box and calibrated results to name but a few.

The pros for the LE8900 range from the quality of the black levels and backlight uniformity through to the inclusion of built in Freeview HD and design of the remote and menus for ease of use. Where the cons flag up the location of the HDMI ports as a weakness due to the ultra thin design of the display.

Here are the scores from AVForum

Techradar have posted an article on their site talking through the best 46-inch, 47-inch and 50-inch TVs in the world. Techradar explain their decision to cover TVs of this size by explaining how TVs of this size get the newest technologies first.

This is the case for LG’s 50-inch PK790 plasma TV, which is packed full of great features including LG’s NetCast online service. The review also picks up on its design which they say is “one of the most attractive we’ve ever seen wrapped around a Plasma TV”.

The new issue of What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision is out and it comes complete with review of 3 of LG’s newest products.

In their Super Test the LE8900 is pitted against similar televisions from Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp and Sony. LG’s LE8900 came through with a 5 star rating and a verdict which reads “As brilliant in action as it is on paper, this is the best LG TV we’ve seen yet”

The full Super Test is available here

The LE7900 TV was also subjected to the once over from the What Hi-Fi experts and came out with a 4 star rating. This super slim member of the Infinia family is “particularly adept with skintones and skin-textures” and is “well worth considering”.

Finally, What Hi-Fi also reviewed the BD570 and gave it a 4 star review! They conclude saying that it provides “lovely, lustrous Blu-ray pictures: decent spec, good build, nice looks”.

A great home entertainment system needs a great Blu-ray player to go with it in order to create the full home cinema experience. LG’s BD570 is just that, offering much more than just top quality Blu-ray playback.

The BD570 comes complete with built in WiFi, enabling you to connect to the internet or a home network giving consumers the option to access content from other DLNA devices, allowing you to play HD quality MKV and DivX files directly from an external USB hard drive.

The BD570 also offers access to LG’s exclusive Netcast feature that is found on some of their newer televisions at the higher end of the tech spectrum. Netcast allows access to web based content, currently including Picasa, AccuWeather and YouTube with more media channels on the horizon.

Big picture big sound have reviewed the BD570 on their site awarding it an overall 3 out of 4 mark, highlighting the quality of the built-in 802.11n: wireless connectivity as a positive. The full review is available here.

The latest issue of What Hi-Fi comes complete with a group test, comparing some of the latest 32” televisions on the market. The test compares the Sharp LC32LE700, the Sony KDL-32V5810, the Toshiba 32AV635DB and the LG 32LE7900, with the LG coming out on top with a 4 star review.

The LG is described as “up to the eyeballs with the latest tech and features. If you want your television to do it all and be a key cog in your networked home, then this set certainly can be”.

The reviewer concludes by saying if you don’t want Freesat or Freeview HD tuners, then you can opt for the cheaper Sharp or Toshiba TVs. However the average level of performance means the knockdown prices are not incentive enough. With all factors considered “it has to be the LG that takes the spoils”.

A few months ago we had an advanced look at the LG Cookie Fresh phone, the successor to the original LG Cookie KP500 phone that sold over ten million units worldwide. We concluded that it was a good entry-level phone with plenty of decent features including an effective integrated social networking tool.

Well you no longer have to take my word for it as both mobilechoiceuk and Which? have both posted reviews of the pre-production sample.

Here’s a quick recap of the specifications for those who missed them the first time round:

3.0” WQVGA touchscreen

2.0MP camera

MP3 player

Micro SD support

Bluetooth™

USB 2.0

3.5 mm headphone jack

Easily personalized homescreen

Mobilechoiceuk observe that the slight change in shape, with a new slimmer, taller design in comparison to the original Cookie, allows for a virtual QWERTY keypad on the touchscreen compared with the old compact T9 keypad. They go on to say the resistive touchscreen (a conscious decision on LG’s behalf to keep the price down) is responsive and colourful, while the handwriting recognition feature is as good as on any phone they have used. They conclude by saying that, as was proved by the original Cookie, there is definitely a market for “a handset that has integrated social networking, a friendly user interface and most appealing of all, an attractive price tag”.

For the full review visit the mobilechoiceuk site here

Which? have posted their own video review of the Cookie fresh which offers a good visual guide to the phone, showing the simplicity and ease of navigation on the handset. They flag up the integrated social networking, music player and gesture shortcuts (meaning you can trace a shape on the screen as a shortcut) as highlights, whilst the lack of 3G is the main down point in the reviewer’s opinion. To watch the full review yourself follow the link here.

CNET UK have reviewed the 50inch LG PK590 Plasma TV awarding it an impressive 9 out of 10.

The reviewer highlights the design, picture quality, easy menu system and competitive price as strengths. Whilst saying the main problem with the PK590 is the bass level on the speakers.

The final judgement reads as follows:

“We really love this TV. For a sensible price, you get a 50-inch 1080p TV with excellent picture quality, THX modes and calibration options mean you can set it up perfectly for your living room. We love the media playback from USB, which works brilliantly. The only things we weren’t keen on were the slightly interference-prone receiver and the shonky built-in speakers. That said, this TV thoroughly deserves its rating, and we’re happy to recommend it”

The good people over at Trustedreviews.com have posted their review of the 42inch LE7900 Infinia LED TV.

With an overall rating of 8 out of 10 things are looking good for the LE7900 ahead of it’s imminent release.

The review concludes with the following statement:

“The 42LE7900 has plenty of ‘wow’ factor in both its design and picture performance, and packs a pretty fearsome feature punch too. It’s clearly the work of a brand thinking on its feet, and hell-bent on making waves at the mid level of the TV world to go with the considerable successes it’s already achieving at the budget end.”

AVForums have released their review of LG’s PK990 Plasma TV this afternoon.

The reviewer highlights the improvement in the depth of the blacks compared to older LG Plasmas as a big positive in this TV. Other noted positives in picture quality are the THX mode, which produces excellent Greyscale and Colour at the click of a button.

The review is the first released for the PK990, which is this year’s flagship Plasma from LG. It comes with LG’s exclusive NetCast technology, allowing consumers’ wireless access to YouTube, Skype to Skype video calling and AccuWeather through their TV as well being fully HD Freeview ready.

The reviewer goes on to describe hi-res photos accessed using a USB device as “absolutely gorgeous on the big screen”. The reviewer points out that input lag is a little higher on this when compared with other plasma TVs making it less ideal for gamers, but it’s worth noting that LG do recommend this TV for watching sports and movies rather than gaming.

The PK990 has a planned release date of mid to late April

In this weeks Gadget Show web.tv episode, Jon Bentley puts the LG InTouch Max GW620 through its paces. His review highlights the value for money of the GW620, citing the QWERTY keyboard, the 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5 mm headphone socket and the range of connectivity as just some of the bonuses. He does ring up the resistive touchscreen and use of android 1.5 as drawbacks, but concedes that none of the flaws are big enough to defeat the proposition of the phone, namely a Smartphone that won’t break the bank! Watch the full video for yourselves below.

Also featured on The Gadget Show’s web.tv this week is a feature on the LG EL9500 OLED TV. At just 3mm in thickness at it’s narrowest point it truly is a stunning television and, as pointed out, it is looking likely that it is soon to be the only OLED on the market in the world! But don’t take our word for it, it’s on display on the LG Stand at the Gadget Show Live so go and have a look for yourselves.

Techradar.com have posted their review of LG’s first android phone, the InTouch Max GW620, awarding it 4 out of 5 stars!

The review states “LG has clearly thought about what users want from a phone like this”, listing the easy to use slide out QWERTY keyboard, high quality 5.0 mega-pixel camera, effective social networking overlay and it’s reasonable price as highlights.

Their main complaint with the phone is the use of the S-class UI (user interface) system, which the reviewer personally struggled with, but also conceded that it can be turned off according to preference.

The review concludes by describing the GW620 as “a real case of how to make Android work without over-complicating things” echoing the President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, Dr. Skott Ahn’s, belief that the phone will “appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience”.

The android phone allows users to access and download apps from the android market place ranging from the fun; NES emulator, virtual keepy uppy and a lyrics search engine to figure out what that song you can’t get out of your head is, through to the serious; a free dictionary, weather reports and even an ovulation checker!

You may have seen this TV on our most recent ad campaign for ‘Seamless entertainment’. We are now really excited to see that people are loving this new 42″ single layer* (no plastic frame) LED TV and some of the press have given it rave reviews.

Home Cinema Magazine has rated it as one of their favourite 40-42″ LED screens and write:

“Although it’s frameless chassis is undeniably alluring, it’s the specification list that will have prospective buyers chomping at the bit to get hold of this one.”

Rik Henderson of Home Cinema Magazine rated it as a “Best Buy” and gave the TV 4/5 for performance, 5/5 for design, 5/5 features and 5/5 overall. In the review he mentions that the TV has “exceptional picture quality and is a master at picking out fine detail in shadows.”

Both articles also mention how easy the TV is to set up – even for the technically challenged. A favourite feature is the ‘Picture Wizard’ which has a guide for brightness and contrast levels for the type of programme you are watching, and which lets you save different settings. The TV’s USB 2.0 media playing capability, 100 HZ processing, Bluetooth connectivity and eco modes are also highlighted, as well as its super duper thinness.

Rock on, these babies are selling for £999.00 at Currys, and it’s great to hear people saying that they are well worth the investment. Sounds like Life’s Good with the 42SL9000…

*Single Layer means that the screen goes right to the edge without a plastic bezel. There is an 8.5mm black line around the edge of the TV, but it is behind the screen.

Techradar has compiled a list of their top 10 32-inch LCD TVs in the world today and LG has managed to get not one but two TVs on that list. We are very proud to see that the LF7700 and the SL8000 both made it on the Top 10 list amongst some very high quality TVs. Take a look at the LG online buyer’s guide for the complete overview of all the latest LG LED and LCD TVs.

LF7700:

Even without a Freesat tuner and Full HD panel this would be considered a good 32in deal, but considering it packs some higher-level processing and overall does a superb job, it should be considered a bargain.

SL8000:

A jack of all trades and slim to boot, the Full HD 32-inch 32SL8000 is a good value and hard-working LCD TV that would grace any living room after a catch-all digital and hi-def solution.

Following the LG Mobile Event in November where a few selected Bloggers and Journalists got hands on time with the newest LG handsets, we have received some fantastic reviews of our phones.

Pocket-lint have written a very detailed review on the LG POP, giving the phone a great score of 8/10, with the size of the handset and the battery power getting the thumbs up in particular. Here are some of the highlights:

friends are represented as avatars that might appear in a zoo or park, or not even as humans at all, and the more you contact them, the more ducks, chickens and all sorts of things are added to their surroundings. It’s completely pointless but really cute and just makes you want to talk to these people more to see what happens next.

LG has really done an excellent job with the Pop. It’s a great handset to use if you don’t want to spend big on a mobile phone.

Take a look at the Life’s Good Mobile Guide for a clear overview of all the latest LG handsets.

The LG LF7700 has in the past received lots of brilliant reviews and recently it got another one to add to the prize cabinet. In the latest issue of What HiFi Sound &Vision , the 47″ LF7700 was reviewed as part of a group test and was awarded a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars. The review is very complimentary and here’s a little snippet for you:

“The excellence of LG’ s menus makes a mockery of those by many other manufacturers, and makes set up less intimidating.”

You can find out more about the LF7700 and other LG TVs at the LG Online Buyer’s Guide which you find here.

LG has further developed and improved the online LG TVs Buyers Guide which aims to find the ideal TV for you using a step-by-step guide as well as now clearly highlighting the benefits and differences between LED, LCD and Plasma.

This microsite is aimed directly at consumers and uses video and other forms of interactive content to help consumers choose a TV that is suited to their individual needs.

Consideration is given to the customers’ distance from the TV, their viewing habits, type of viewing platform used in the home, lighting conditions, and the room in which it is positioned.

“Consumer choice has never been greater and it’s key for us to help support consumers and retailers by providing the right tools to simplify common misconceptions around tech terminology. Ultimately, we want to help consumers make the right choice to enhance their home entertainment experience.” George Mead, Marketing Manager, LG Electronics

The LG TVs Buyers Guide is also available on the Comet and Currys websites.

We are very happy to announce the recent success of the LG SL9000 being awarded Best Buy by the well known What Video & Hi-Def TV Magazine and the PS7000 winning Best Buy and Best Value at the What Video & Hi-Def TV Awards.

The 42SL9000 is awarded 5 stars out of 5 as well as the ‘Best Buy’ honor. The review includes fabulous comments such as: “This flatscreen might well be remembered as one of the sets that put LED backlighting firmly on the map. The chic 42in set sports an elegant ‘frameless design’ and comes with an enticing spec list.” The review ends on a high note stating that the SL9000“packs one of the best performances currently available into the most desirable chassis we’ve ever seen.”

The article above gives the 50PS7000 the ‘Best Value TV of 2009’ award. It includes a wealth of compliments on the TV including: “The features on offer are astonishing considering the price.” The images are referred to as “being cleaner and more believable” and the detail in dark areas as “admirable.” It comments on the “richness” of the colours, which “you won’t find on most liquid crystal screens” and on the motion which “is free from blur.”

The review concludes: “Best of all, the built-in speakers are among the very best around”.

The review highlights the SL8000′s sleek form-factor…

…it’s impressive feature-set…

In terms of connectivity, for example, it boasts an innovative wireless Bluetooth system for use with headphones or for playing MP3s and JPEGs from mobile phones. Among numerous other connections, there are also four HDMI ports and a USB socket that, impressively, is capable of playing high-definition DivX video, WMV, MP3 and JPEG files.

… and the outstanding image quality…

it’s impossible not to be struck by the outstanding dynamism of the 42SL8000′s pictures. Bright whites share the frame happily with easily the deepest, most natural blacks we’ve seen on an LG LCD TV so far.

The review concludes…

The LG 42SL8000 looks gorgeous, has more connections than you’ll ever need, is bursting with features and options, offers pictures that are a joy to behold 99 per cent of the time, and, at £1000, isn’t expensive at all considering what it offers. What’s not to like?

Last week, Techradar reviewed the 42SL9000 and awarded the TV five stars out of five, claiming “LG’s brilliant new LED TV heralds ‘borderless’ era.”

LG’s 42SL9000 42-inch LCD TV might well come to be remembered as one of the sets that put LED backlighting firmly on the map…This chic 42-inch set is decked out in an elegant ‘frameless’ design and comes with the sort of spec sheet that should have home movie fans instinctively reaching for their wallets.

The review discusses features such as the full HD panel, the 100Hz processing, the Bluetooth connectivity, the four HDMI ports, and the LED backlighting. The review refers to the colours as “exemplary” , the interface as “brilliant” and adds that LG manages to exceed expectations in terms of the amount of volume at the consumer’s disposal.

The article concludes…

The 42SL9000 is one of the most imaginatively featured sets around at the moment. It’s a state-of-the-art panel spec, has class-leading processing and an impressively effective LED backlighting system, plus all sorts of genuinely useful touches such as Bluetooth connectivity and one of the best operating systems ever. Detail and colours are superb, black levels are good and the whole is wrapped up in a super stylish cabinet.

Please note that the review incorrectly states that the TV comes with an Ethernet port and incorrectly references the intelligent sensor.

We are very proud to announce that LG won two awards last week at the Mobile Choice Consumer Awards. LG won Manufacturer of the Year as well as the Chocolate BL40 being crowned Most Stylish Phone. Take a look below at the judges’ comments for awarding LG with such prestigious awards.

“They’ve consistently improved their touch-screen technology…and have a real knack for making incredibly sleek, stylish phones too. And in a credit-crunched year, they’ve racked up some impressive profits thanks to high-selling phones like the Arena and Cookie (one million and five million units sold respectively). But it’s not just LG’s mainstream appeal, it’s their innovation in products like the Watch Phone (left), and the recent New Chocolate BL40, which packs cinematic high-res widescreen in possibly the world’s skinniest, longest chassis.”

“LG’s new Chocolate brushes the rest aside to become queen of the catwalk. An eye-catching phone is as much of a fashion statement as the latest handbag or trendy haircut. Our shortlist highlights those phones that are made from the finest materials, have the good looks to turn heads and, above all, ooze class. From its colossal four-inch widescreen display to its polished piano black finish, everything about the LG New Chocolate BL40 sparkles… Unconventionally tall, the handset is svelte, and its display, which has over 16 million colours and a 345×800 pixel count, is one of the most vibrant we’ve seen. Despite facing some tough competition, the LG New Chocolate BL40 is a worthy winner of Most Stylish Phone 2009. It’s almost good enough to eat. Almost.”

As you may have noticed, we released several S-Class handsets earlier this year, with the Arena KM-900 leading the pack, so it’s about time for one of our periodic review round-ups to recap on how everyone felt about the phones. First up is the Arena itself…

Coolest-Gadgets UK considered verdict matched up fairly well to his pleased first impressions and showed the phone is as hardy as the Secret:

The Arena’s been in my pocket with no cover or screen protector for the entire period of the test and it still looks as good as new with no obvious blemishes or scratches. This bodes well for the longevity of the Arena.

The Arena isn’t perfect but it is a good solid multimedia phone that’ll keep you entertained on the commute and impress your mates in the pub. LG tell us that the Arena is targeted at that all important 16 to 24 age group. It certainly impressed the people in that age range that used the phone. The only negative comments were on the quality of the games that are shipped with it.

- As someone who’d only just mastered the mToy games available on the Secret that’s a gripe I can share – I’d gotten pretty good at fishing on Secret, but I can’t show that off on the Arena… But there are plenty of games available for the Arena, you can find out more here.

Zath saw fit to recommend the Arena as a “top notch mobile phone”

…picture quality, brightness and contrast are all excellent; this is mostly down to sheer pixel density as the Arena packs 800×480 onto the 3” screen which results in one of the best ‘pixel per inch’ figures for phones of this size…

…The sensitivity is also pretty good as the relatively powerful CPU and 3D graphics accelerator combine with the aforementioned screen to instantly register touches…

…the pictures it takes are of good quality (and it can record video at 720×480 up to 30 fps) and the on screen options and viewfinder are easy to use and change…..

..in many ways it’s significantly better than the iPhone – it has a removable battery, a micro SD card slot, superior resolution and a much better camera, and at around £300 it is that bit cheaper; and when you also consider that most of the other things that count are also similar in quality (UI, big screens, multi-touch and connectivity options to mention just a few) you would be forgiven for thinking that the LG Arena will definitely take the iPhone’s crown….

Electricpig awards the Arena 4/5 stars and commented that the Arena..

Oozes style and that touchscreen’s the best we’ve seen…

…The three-inch, WVGA touchscreen can fit in more pixels than Graham Norton can television shows in a week. And as a result it’s one of the most hi-res around, making everything on it look stunning: even Gordon Brown’s YouTube messages….

…The awesome screen is matched by the lavish, silver exterior of the Arena -it looks absolutely stunning – and the myriad features that it comes packing: Wi-Fi, HSDPA, A-GPS, a five-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, auto focus, LED flash and image stabilisation, 8GB of storage (which is expandable to 32GB via microSD card), DivX video support and Dolby Mobile sound. And it’s that last feature that impressed the most, with Dolby Mobile tricking your ears into thinking that you’re listening to surround sound. It even gives the Sony Ericsson Walkmans a run for their money audio-wise…

They saw fit to not only devote a glowing review of the Arena, but also several ‘How To’ articles, including…

How to completely customise the LG Arena, which covers homescreen and sound customisation, menu reordering and music visualisations.

Hidden secrets of the LG Arena covering how the Arena works with Macs, audio streaming, push email and a whole host more features.

And How to download podcasts on the LG Arena, which does exactly what it says on the tin.

Know Your Mobile gave the Arena a sparkling 5 out of 5, saying…

The LG Arena is quite a looker and is brimming with features

..and giving a final verdict of…

Lots of features are packed into a slimline case and coupled with a super touch screen user interface and neatly designed software.

All in all, a fabulous global impression for LG’s flagship S-Class handset which flew past the million-sales mark only a few weeks ago.

If there’s one word that immediately sums up LG’s 42SL8000, it’s slim. For as well as being 45mm deep, its bezel extends barely an inch beyond three sides of the TV. Even the slightly wider bottom edge is still much smaller than we see with most LG sets.
This all-round svelteness, together with an ultra-glossy finish, angled top edge and subtle blue tinge infused into the bottom extremity ensures that the TV really does look stunning.

Helping the picture along is the most recent incarnation of the company’s multi-talented XD Engine Video, not to mention a comprehensive set of picture adjustments for tweaking noise reduction, dynamic colour and contrast, plus the proprietary RealCinema system that enhances 24p hi-def material.

In the aftermath of IFA, LG’s success is continuing with another top rating, this time from What TV and HD TV Magazine. The 42SL8000 TV received a 5* Best Buy award. The review pulls out and highlights the key features such as the screen quality and sharp HD picture.

Particularly startling is how extremely sharp HD pictures look. Pristine Blu-ray signals are packed with spectacular amounts of fine detail, texture and subtlety. What’s more, the screen’s superb detail extends into dark areas of the picture. For, provided the image has been decently calibrated, dark scenes suffer far less from hollowness and flatness than many LG tellies, or indeed LCD TVs from several other brands for that matter.

In typical LG style, the 42SL8000 offers far more in terms of design prowess, features and performance than you’ve any right to expect for such a modest outlay
