What sets LG’s TV picture apart from other OLED TVs is 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner which work together to generate natural and accurate colors that are sharp and consistent. The 4-Color Pixels feature allows for more accurate color depiction by using a set of four colors (red, green blue and white) in comparison to the RGB setup used by other OLED TV manufacturers. Color Refiner ensures consistency in colors from a wider viewing angle via an LG algorithm which improves and refines hues and tones. This is in contrast to other OLED TVs which often exhibit drastic changes in hues from different viewing angles and abnormal color gamut.

Damon will be present at the Life’s Good Lounge which will showcase LG’s Next Generation TVs, Blu-ray players, and home cinema systems. To launch the national tour, Damon and his son Joshua Hill (widely seen as the future of British racing) will join shoppers at the LG Lounge on Friday from 10.30am until midday. Londoners will be able to see father and son in action, as they race against each other on a LG 3D TV, as well as challenge Christmas shoppers to beat their lap time. As an added incentive, shoppers who can beat Damon’s lap time will enter a competition to win LG 3D TV Package worth over £1000.

Hardcore gamers are hardcore for a reason, and LG definitely had this special group of consumers in mind when we made Dual Play. Many of them may have caught wind that this feature was coming and they were itching to try it out for themselves. They are all used to playing shooter games, racing games, and other multiplayer console games on a split-screen with friends and have probably always wondered if their buddy was cheating with a sneak peak or two.

Dual Play Xbox Gaming

Dual play fixes that once and for all, letting two players enjoy one game while sharing the same big screen. We’ve explained how it works here. Because there was already some buzz about Dual Play, we knew that gamers were going to love it, and they did!

In fact, Dual Play received some pretty rave reviews from various analysts and avid gamers. We’re more than happy to crow about our tech but it’s always rewarding when the experts agree and do it for us. (Check out the video)

We could go on and on about how awesome Dual Play is but as one reviewer in PC Magazine put it, “Dual Play technology must be seen to be believed.” It’s really that good.

Multiplayer Gaming Goes Full Screen with LG Dual Play is a post from: LG Blog

The independent voting academy of 25 highly credentialed cricket experts put Trott first, ahead of a formidable group of players that had been short-listed, including England team-mate Alastair Cook, last year’s winner Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa opening batsman Hashim Amla.

Trott follows in the footsteps of India’s Rahul Dravid (2004), Andrew Flintoff of England and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (joint winners in 2005), Ricky Ponting of Australia (2006 and 2007), West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2008), Mitchell Johnson of Australia (2009) and India’s Sachin Tendulkar (2010) to take the top award.

Trott accepted the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy from ICC President Sharad Pawar at a glittering ceremony in London and was clearly thrilled with the accolade.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be part of a successful team and I never envisaged winning this award and it’s a brilliant feeling to be recognised.”

Based on the period between 11 August 2010 and 3 August 2011, the LG ICC Awards 2011 presented in association with FICA take into account performances by players and officials in a remarkable period for the game.

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara has become the second-ever recipient of the LG People’s Choice Award at the LG ICC Awards in London.

Sangakkara was voted to the award by the general public and beat off strong competition for the award from South Africa’s Hashim Amla, England’s Jonathan Trott, West Indies’ Chris Gayle and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The award, which was introduced last year at the LG ICC Awards in Bengaluru, was chosen by cricket fans around the world who, over the course of four weeks had the opportunity to vote for their favourite player. Sangakkara was unable to collect the award in person due to current playing commitments in the Sri Lanka Test series against Australia in Colombo.

Andy Mackay, LG Electronics UK Commercial Director, announced that the Sri Lankan had scooped the prize at the ceremony in London last night.

The Festival features a LG booth, where visitors are encouraged to play 3D games on LG’s various 3D products, enabling visitors to experience first-hand LG’s immersive 3D world. Featured products spanned CINEMA 3D TVs, monitors, and projectors to Optimus 3D smartphones and 3D sound-equipped home theater systems. In particular, with the Optimus 3D, gamers worldwide were able to experience LG’s own 2D to 3D game conversion engine.

The types of venues selected for the Festival varied by country. In order to accommodate larger crowds, shopping malls were chosen for Russia, India and Chile. In order to give visitors a comfortable feel of how home entertainment should be, Festival visitors in Dubai interacted with various LG 3D products in Living Room Video Game Cafes. In Brazil and Germany, LG opted for a road show format, hoping to generate curiosity amongst the countries’ demanding consumers.

‘Gamescom’ is the biggest games and entertainment show in the world and was held in Colon, Germany from Aug.17-21. At the show, LG opened a booth and provided the full 3D gaming experience with its entire line-up of 3D products. Visitors were particularly fond of the lightweight glasses that functioned with all LG 3D screens.
At Germany’s Gamescom, the world’s largest gaming and entertainment exhibition, LG introduced an array of gaming and gaming-related devices which were used for 3D games produced by the likes of Blizzard Entertainment. LG’s 3D products were also hooked up to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

In Russia, LG set up the Festival at Mega Khimki, one of the largest shopping malls in Moscow. Several celebrity Russian gamers and national broadcasting companies took part in the Festival which featured a gaming tournament called ‘1C SoftKlab.’ The glasses-free Optimus 3D proved to be a big hit among Russian visitors, a top of the line smartphone that previews the future of larger screen 3D TVs.

Meanwhile, the Festival in Dubai has been a pro-longed one. Having begun in late July, the Festival is expected to culminate in the Mega Championship on January 6 of next year. Leading up to the championship finale, LG will continue to host daily, weekly and monthly contests in Dubai. The contest winners have been awarded prizes, which has certainly contributed to generating popularity. So far, t-shirts have been handed out at smaller contests, while some of the larger ones have awarded 42-inch CINEMA 3D TVs and other LG 3D products.

Celebrities and entertainers were invited to LG’s 3D Game Festival in Russia. Various media events and performances demonstrated the potential that 3D could bring to gaming.


In Dubai, LG has jointly worked with ‘Living Rooms Video Games Cafés where users experience a true 3D gaming environment at home. The championships events have proven very popular, and organizers say the city is gaining more interest in home 3D gaming.

Overall, LG’s 3D Game Festival has served a meaningful purpose, exposing the latest industry-leading 3D products and technologies to users. In addition to LG’s immersive display panels and dazzling 3D visuals, visitors across the world were able to witness LG’s attempts to make 3D more convenient, as evidenced in LG’s 3D glasses. Unlike the heavier battery-powered 3D glasses of other 3D TV manufacturers, LG’s battery-free 3D glasses are far more comfortable to wear, enabling consumers to enjoy 3D entertainment for as long as they desire. After all, 3D is the next big thing in home entertainment, and it should be a pleasant experience.

3D Filming Janes Addiction

At this recent Jane’s Addiction concert, LG and the band selected 100 fans to film the gig in 3D using an Optimus 3D smartphone. Also, thanks to LG’s existing partnership with YouTube, fans all over the world got the chance to see the world’s first user-generated 3D concert on YouTube (www.youtube.com/comealive).

Held on a 360° stage that allowed for full surround sound and panoramic viewing, the concert was part of LG’s efforts to put 3D content creation in the hands of users and show just how far 3D entertainment has come.

Armed with the LG Optimus 3D devices, Jane’s Addiction’s fans enjoyed the band’s most famous songs while capturing 3D video of the concert that helped create a 60-minute documentary about the “World’s First 3D User-Generated Concert.”

Canary Wharf was the backdrop to the launch of the Optimus 3D phone on July 14, when The Only Way is Essex stars Mark Wright and James Argent rubbed shoulders with besuited workers to check out the handset’s capabilities in the flesh. If you’ve got one of fantastic Optimus 3D phones or perhaps an LG Smart Cinema3D TV here are their 3D antics!

In addition to letting people get up close and personal with the Optimus 3D, the Play Hub gives them the chance to pose for photos with some LG models and to compete to set the fastest time in a racing game on the phone.

And complementing the real-world demonstrations of the phone at these events, our ‘Play With Me’ Facebook app has been up and running for a few days now. This allows users who ‘like’ the app to create a personalised – and quite possibly cheeky – video message to share with friends.

The app was designed to draw on the relationships that people have with their phones – and their reactions to them – to play to the light-hearted side of users, and to encourage them to share their creations through Facebook and Twitter. It features the talents of two models – Carly and Josh – who each have a bank of clips to offer the user, from the straightforward building blocks of sentences, to rather more tactile verbs (such as ‘pinch’ or ‘vibrate’). There’s also a few curve balls in there – ‘badger’, anyone? – meaning users can be as playful as they like in piecing together their message.

Canary Wharf was the backdrop to the launch event on 14 July, when besuited workers got to try their hands on the handsets in the pods while some familiar faces from TV phenomenon The Only Way is Essex - Mark Wright and James Argent – lent their street cred to proceedings.

After this, the travelling Play Hub to play with the Optimus 3D in various scenarios – with a Harley-Davidson for photo posing, and room for gamers to compete to set the fastest time of the session – was camped out for several days at Cavendish Square, just off Oxford Street.

And last weekend, the Play Hub turned up at the Ultimate Street Car event at Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire, where stacks of people turned out to mount the Harley for a pic.

This week the Play Hub is due to return to Canary Wharf, while later in the month it will be heading to Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens, with a further stop back in the capital’s Broadgate Circle in September.

And in addition to these events, there have been roving teams heading out most days taking the phones round the country by van – supported by a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #play3D. Meanwhile, supporting all this activity, other teams have intrepidly set out on foot, taking the handsets into the nightspots of the country.

We are hitting the road again – this time with a series of shopping centre roadshows, showcasing our latest range of smartphones and offering consumers the chance to try out our innovative new technologies.

Starting this Thursday in Manchester’s Trafford Centre, the pop-up stand will include the latest smartphones from the new top-end Optimus range, including the LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first phone with a dual-core processor and the LG Optimus Black, one of the slimmest, brightest phones on the market. Handsest will be displayed on a ‘device bar’ allowing shoppers to play with the phones at their leisure with LG Crew Customer on hand with expert advice.

Highlighting one of the great features of the Optimus 2X, visitors can connect it to TVs to play the latest video games and there is a dedicated family area to keep the kids entertained, where they can  enter a competition to win a 42” LG LED TV.

To coincide with the roadshow there will be LG experts in major retailers in the shopping centres, where consumers can gain further information about LG’s new smartphones and available tariff options. LG is also running an exclusive giveaway promotion whereby customers will receive a set of new LG headphones when an LG phone is purchased in any of the stores in the shopping centre.

LG tours the country showcasing latest smartphones is a post from: LG Blog

Co-founded by two-time Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro, the Tribeca Film Festival promotes independent-minded productions from around the world. This year’s event wrapped on the 1^st of May, having shown some 5,600 films and documentaries from more than 40 countries at the New York Event.

Star turns this year included Cameron Crowe’s “The Union”, his first film in six years, and Will Ferrell, who lent his comedic talents to the low-budget comedy “Everything Must Go.”

Always one to promote smaller independent features, there were also exciting projects from rising talents, including productions from South Africa, Norway and across the United States tackling everything from avant-garde poets to children with photographic memories.

Always eager to help the talents of tomorrow, LG provided students from Chicago’s Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy with equipment and technical support to help them produce a series of shorts utilising our latest Cinema 3D™ technology. These shots debuted at this year’s festival on a series of Cinema 3D™ TVs and Blu-ray™ players in venues throughout lower Manhattan.

“As a student it’s important to be able to learn how to shoot 3D, how to edit 3D, how to master 3D, because it’s the way of the future,” said Stephen Fletcher, a student at the academy.

Standout shorts submitted by the students included “The Flying Wallendas Highwire Family”, a short that perfectly captured the tension of live high wire performances in the 3D format. Viewers also enjoyed an animated short, “the Universe of 3D” which showed how LG’s 2D logo could be transformed into a compelling visual experience.

The aim of the joint project with LG and the Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy is aiming to educate a new era of filmmakers in the skills needed to work with 3D with an inventive and daring edge.

At the ripe old age of 10, the Tribeca Festival has matured into one of the leading outlets for creative, leftfield filmmaking in the United States. As 3D moves from the creative fringes to the mainstream, it’s thrilling to know that some of the cream of the country’s cinematic talent will be fulfilling De Niro’s vision, and discovering just how powerful 3D can be.

Courtesy of the BBC, the Royal Wedding, Insider promises insider access to breaking news and exclusive videos amongst others. Considering it’s free and considering the BBC’s coverage of the day and relationship with the Royal Family this looks like it could be a winner.

London Tube Status

With a lot of tourists coming into London for the wedding we recommend a decent tube app to find your way around the city so you don’t get on the wrong tube and end up in Camberwell! London Tube Status is our favourite at the blog, with any disruptions listed as well as live departure times.
We appreciate the Royal Wedding may not be everyone’s cup of tea, in which case we still recommend this app – just avoid Parliament Square!

I recently introduced the LG Home event that took place early last week in a rather decadent townhouse just off Tottenham Court Road in Central London. The idea behind the event was to stage an event where journalists and bloggers could come along and have a look at LG’s new range of Home Entertainment products as they would be set up ideally in the home. There was a number of the LG team on hand to conduct tours around the home and to answer any questions that visitors may have.

I was lucky enough to make it to the house twice in 2 days – first on the Tuesday night for an event populated by forum members from CNET, What Hi-Fi and Stuff.tv, and on the Thursday during the day with some of the users from AVForums.

The Tuesday night event was an opportunity for some lucky forum members to have a sneak preview of LG’s latest range of TVs, as well as grill the team on the ins and outs of the products.

The tour was led by LG’s George Mead and started in the Kitchen where we were given our first glance of Smart TV. Shown on the LW950T, Smart TV is the next generation of that was unveiled by LG at CES in January this year. George talked us through the features of Smart TV, demonstrating some of them along the way including web navigation via an inbuilt browser, apps and catch up TV with iPlayer, before some of us were able to try out the LG Magic Motion Remote that makes navigating the Smart TV menu a doddle with its Nintendo Wii style motion remote.

Smart TV is available on some of the new 2011 range of TVs, but LG are very conscious that it’s rare that someone will buy a new TV each year so they have created the ST600 Smart TV upgrader. Offering all the content available on the in-built Smart TV, the ST600 connects straight up to any TV with a HDMI giving you access to the Smart experience without having to shell out for a new TV. And just to sweeten the experience LG showed this off on the EL9500 OLED! At just 2.9mm thick its depth (or lack of) is almost as enticing as the quality offered by OLED technology.

Next up on the tour was the living room where we all grabbed a seat and enjoyed watching some 3D football on the Sky 3D channel with the 47” LW650T Cinema 3D. George explained the reasons that LG are championing Cinema 3D this year, and as we listened it all became very apparent. The big advantages of Cinema 3D over active shutter technology comes down to the glasses used. With the Cinema 3D range from LG you get 7 pairs of glasses in the box, compared to one in the box with most active shutter offerings. If you damage the glasses or simply want to buy more a new pair of active glasses will set you back around £100, whereas a new pair of Cinema 3D glasses are anywhere between £2 and £15 a pair. Combine this with the fact that Cinema 3D has a wider viewing angle and you have the perfect 3D experience to share. In fact by the end of the night via a quick show hands, only one person still preferred active shutter technology.

After this we headed to the master bedroom where George demonstrated the media hub capabilities of the LG range with the 47” LV550T. Using LG’s bespoke Media Link we saw how easy it was to access content from your home computer on your LG TV. Particularly impressive was the content that the Media Link would find for you online – for example if you were watching a film on your TV from your computer Media Link tracks down a synopsis of the film from Wikipedia as well as a rating from IMDB!

In the attic room we were treated to a spot of 3D gaming, with Call of Duty: Black Ops was played on an Xbox 360 through an LG450U Cinema 3D TV. A lot of the bloggers in attendance were very impressed with the immersive quality of the experience, and I certainly include myself in that!

The event overall was great, allowing these tech fans to get to not only have a good first hand go with LG’s new technology, but to also put their questions to the experts. There were drinks put on and plenty of food and everyone stuck around after to enjoy this and share their thoughts. To round the evening off nicely we had a tournament playing Call of Duty: Black Ops in 3D, with the winner taking away £200 of Selfridges vouchers. I would like to say I walked away victorious, but sadly I was felled in the semi-final, with Sam from the CNET forum walking away victorious.

The awards ceremony began with opening remarks from Peter Zec, chairman of the reddot Design Awards. Zec said that this year, a total of 6,396 works from 44 countries were in competition, of which 610 won reddot awards, while 62 were named the best of the best.

Amongst these 62 prize winners was LG’s reusable package, receiving plaudits from the jury and spectators alike for its unique approach.

The unique package caught people’s attention not only due to its stylish design, but also because it was made of eco-friendly, recyclable paper that was printed with soybean oil and didn’t use any artificial materials such as glue. LG’s gem of design was also recognized for its versatility. Once the product had been removed, the package could be reused as a photo frame, a pencil stand, and for many other purposes. The packaging was intended as a reminder of what people can do to help protect the environment.

The reddot judges complimented: “LG’s reusable eco package is very simple but very impressive in that it shows a creative solution in design for the environment.”

LG have proven this year that design is about more than just looking great. The company’s recyclable packaging shows how creative ideas can make things easier for us all, and even help change the world. It is a message the reddot judges agreed with, and one the company will continue to embrace with its future products.

We have barely had time to wipe the sweat from our brow after the hard work before and during CES 2011, but already MWC 2011 is fast approaching.

Kicking off in Barcelona on the 14^th of February, Mobile World Congress is the biggest event in the mobile technology calendar. First appearing on the technology calendar in 1987 when holding your mobile phone to your ear was a test of strength and endurance, Mobile World Congress called Cannes home until 2006 when it relocated to Barcelona. The reason behind this move may have something to do with the leg-aching 365,000m2 of floor space they have at the Fira de Barcelona event venue.

We know from the recent CES 2011 convention in Las Vegas that tablets were one of the big product categories represented by a lot of consumer electronics companies, and I’m sure no one is doubting that there will be more on display in Barcelona.

But beyond tablets the question remains what will be the big technology trends and innovations on display?

After the headline-stealing success of the launch of the LG Optimus 2X and the Atrix from Motorola at CES earlier this month, the betting man would have his money on more brands launching dual-core smartphones, with Nvidia supplying the processors!

Another hot-topic of conversation is the evolution of 4G technology and the handsets supporting this. 4G is unsurprisingly the successor to 3G, but the exciting thing is that it allows handsets to more effectively use features like video calling, mobile TV and much improved browsing speeds.

The problem still remains that there is yet to be a uniform technology agreed upon. Signs point toward the emerging eminence of LTE (Long Term Evolution, as used by Verizon Wireless in the US). Pocketlint recently spoke to UK service providers, and came to the conclusion that 4G was still some distance away within the UK, despite 4G handsets lined up for UK release this year. Regardless of this news, expect 4G to be very much present at MWC in Barcelona.

The bad news for all of you hardcore mobile phone fanatics is that MWC is not open to the general public. The good news is that we will be keeping you up to date with all of the latest announcements, products and innovation from LG at MWC 2011 right here on the blog.

July 24^th 2010 may seem like an unremarkable day for many of you, but for LG, Ridley Scott, Kevin MacDonald and 80,000 of you it will be remembered as the day they took part in a unique user-generated documentary following the lives of people worldwide on one day.

Produced by Academy Award nominee Ridley Scott and directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald, Life in a Day invited people worldwide to submit video footage of their lives on July 24^th, which has since been edited into the world’s first user generated feature length documentary shot in one day. Over 80,000 clips were submitted, totaling over 4500 hours of footage and the finished product is ready to be premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on the 27^th of January and will be broadcast live on the internet at 8pm EST. This will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with Kevin MacDonald and a selection of the contributors to the project who are being flown out to the Sundance Film Festival.

With a pedigree including an Oscar for best documentary for 1999’s One day in September, Kevin MacDonald was the perfect man to take on such an ambitious project. Speaking of Life in a Day MacDonald recently said “to hear ordinary people express those very basic emotions and ideas is really powerful and direct. And I think that’s what’s so beautiful about the film.”

The tour used an interactive living room installation complete with a sofa big enough for the whole family, treats to enjoy whilst trying out the 3D experience alongside a 3D TV demonstrating nature, sport, drama and even gaming in 3D!

The tour kicked off in Westfields Shopping Centre in West London where seven Harry Potters in costume marking the launch of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows invaded the lounge.

The Life’s Good Lounge visited a different city each weekend including Manchester, Birmingham and Milton Keynes and had a celebrity guest in each location. At Manchester’s Trafford Centre visitors got to try their hand at 3D gaming with Coronation Street’s Ryan Connor. In Milton Keynes visitors were treated to the sight of Britain’s Got Talent star Stavros Flatley swapping dancing for 3D gaming, minus his shirt naturally.

Other guests included The X Factor’s Treyc Cohen in her hometown of Birmingham, as well as Santa taking time off from his busy pre-Christmas schedule to make a surprise appearance in both Birmingham and Kent!

At what was the 29^th edition of the Autosport Awards, more than 1,200 guests gathered to pay tribute to the biggest names in their profession. The top echelons of F1 were much in evidence too, including star drivers Sam Bird, David Brabham and the recently crowned F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. With the F1 season recently finished and Christmas fast approaching, there was a distinctly festive air at the glamorous event.

Run in partnership between LG Electronics and the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), the LG Moment of the Year competition this year saw more than 35,000 fans visit the LG F1 website (www.lg.com/f1) to vote for their favorite moment from this year’s F1 championships.

The 19 shortlisted moments, one for each Grand Prix race, included the dramatic collision between Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber at the Turkish Grand Prix, as well as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso claiming his 55^th podium finish with a second place in Barcelona. In a tight field, the final winner was a moment showing Heikki Kovalainen, a Finnish racer for Lotus Racing, bravely putting out his own car which had burst into flames at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The incident occurred on the 59^th lap of the race, when a fire suddenly erupted from the engine of Kovalainen’s Lotus. In an incredible display of sang froid, the Finn avoided the pit lanes, got out the car and put the fire out with an extinguisher.

After 59 laps in the heat of Singapore, a ruptured fuel line sparks a major blaze. Avoiding a packed pitlane, Heikki Kovalainen parked safely off the racing line, grabbed an extinguisher and put out the fire

Marking its 60^th anniversary this year, F1 began in Bahrain on March 14 before ending, nine dramatic months later, in Abu Dhabi. It was a sensational year for the LG-sponsored Red Bull Racing, which won the Constructors’ Championship just five years after the team was formed, and for its star driver Sebastian Vettel, who became the youngest F1 World Champion in history. Vettel’s year got even better at the Autosport Awards, where he was named International Racing Driver of the Year.

The start of the next F1 season is already just three months away. As they count down the days to when their sporting heroes again grace racetracks around the world, F1 fans are no doubt already looking forward to many more Moments of the Year next year.

With CES just around the corner we thought it was time to cast a nostalgic eye back to the last CES to have a look at some of the successes of the show and how well those successes have been integrated into the market.

The LG pod at CES earlier this year was jam packed with great technology, in fact over 2 football pitches in size of technology, and saw us walk away with an impressive 15 awards at the end of the show!

3D TV:

One of the buzzwords ahead of last year’s CES was 3D TV, with LG displaying a wide range on their stand including a 72inch beast!
Well 2010 has certainly been the year of 3D, with LG performing admirably in this field. We were the first to launch a Full LED 3D TV in the form of the LX9900 and are still the only manufacturer offering both active 3D and passive, or cinema, 3D. It was this inclusion of ‘cinema 3D’ into our range that helped shape our official partnership with Sky, as they recommend us as their first choice manufacturer for 3D TVs.

Magic Motion Remote:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Magic Motion Remote try picturing a Nintendo Wii controller that you use to navigate your way through all of the actions you would normally undertake on a standard remote control. The TVs using the magic motion remote have a specially designed UI with larger icons to make navigation easier, as well as a series of inbuilt games that utilize the Magic Motion Remote including Whack-a-mole.
The Magic Motion Remote has been introduced into the market on some of the high end TVs including the LX9900 Full LED 3DTV and has been received well, with AVForums branding it “a neat feature that will appeal to many users against using the larger more common remote control.”

OLED:

OLED or organic light emitting diode is a relatively new technology to date that enables an exceptional picture quality on a TV that meaures in at 2.5mms in depth, and the 15” EL9500 model that LG demoed at CES earlier this year has been the only OLED model on the market this year.
Well LG have taken the next logical step and launched a 31” OLED at this year’s IFA show in Berlin. It is not yet on the market, but it is surely only a matter of time before OLED is widely available.

A range of LG 3D ready TVs will be on display – the Plasma (PK990), Full LED (LX9900) and the LCD (LD950) – the only passive 3D TV available in the UK. Last night was the launch party of the brand new LG Optimus One handset. The exclusive party was held at the Penthouse bar on London’s Leicester Square, with a wonderful seventh floor view of the London skyline at night the perfect place to try out the Optimus One’s Google Goggles feature.

The party served as an introduction to the new handset, with LG’s trainers on hand to talk party-goers through the wide range of features on the handset whilst they enjoyed a drink and a canapé. Entertainment was on hand over the evening with a DJ set from model Dasiy Lowe and her fashion designer mother Pearl Lowe and a live performance and DJ set from Mr Hudson. Other celebrity guests over the night spotted trying out the Optimus One phone included Kelly Brook, Linford Christie and even football pundit Chris Kamara!

Personal highlights for me included talking to Daisy Lowe (who was the definition of lovely), bumping knuckles with Olympic legend Linford Christie and having Chris Kamara read me the Champions League football scores in the toilet. LG sure know how to throw a party!

The Optimus One is the newest Android addition to the Optimus family and runs Android 2.2. It is also home to a whole host of exclusive LG content including the LG App Advisor that recommends users ten new apps each fortnight alongside all the latest Google services including Google Goggles, Google Shopper and Google Navigation with turn-by-turn navigation. The 50th IFA just wrapped up in Berlin and it’s safe to say it was a great show with a whole host of new and innovative technology and gadgetry on display. LG had a strong presence launching some great new products as well as showing off some stunning prototypes to let us know what is in store for the future!

31 Inch OLED TV:

Techdigest named LG’s 31” OLED TV “the best Tech of the Show”. This hardly comes as a surprise considering LG are the only manufacturer selling OLED at the moment, the 15” EL9500, a set that will be dwarfed by the eventual arrival of the 31” set. The set measures in at a jaw dropping 29mm in depth making it the slimmest OLED in the world and even brings 3D to OLED for the first time.
Techdigest concluded by saying, “what really won over our eyes and
hearts was the pin-sharp clarity of 2D images and magnificent colour depth. I’ve never been so willing to sit through an episode of Garfield the Cat as I was whilst watching the 31 inch OLED demo, with a contrast ratio that, to quote Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel, could only be described as ‘none-more black’ “.

LEX8 Nano Technology Full LED 3D Ready TV:

The LEX8 uses a completely new type of LCD panel that offers excellent picture quality via LG’s proprietary NANO Lighting Technology, whilst only being 1.25cm in depth. One of the writers from the Gadgets and Gizmos blog was there and said that the colours were really bright and vivid – even under the trade showroom lights. This is a result of an ultra thin layer in front of the direct FULL LED back lighting, complete with microscopic holes that allow light to escape ensuring the brightest picture possible.

LG Smart TV:

Another product on display at IFA this year was LG’s take on Smart TV, internet-linked sets that promise to revolutionise the way people watch TV. Building on LG’s Magic Motion Remote (imagine a Wii remote to navigate your TV menu), Smart TV aims to increase viewing options whilst also simplifying the use of your television.

At the LG booth there were a selection of prototype Smart TV apps on display covering entertainment, education, news and health, whilst LG are also looking into partnerships with a number of content providers to expand this further.

The ever-changing 3D artwork on the nearly three-storey high screen (23 x 21m) captured the attention of many a passerby. It started with a countdown on a giant hourglass before viewers were greeted by an “android” before the presentation took viewers on a fifteen minute ride that included whales, ice skaters, giant octopi, and steaming jungles amongst other things. The show concluded with the advice: “Optimize Your Life!” which will be the official tagline of the Optimus Series marketing campaign.

The grand finale involved the audience becoming the stars as photos they took of themselves on phones provided by LG had their images displayed on the media façade.

First announced in July, LG Optimus Series is LG’s advanced line-up of smartphones and tablet devices featuring the latest in mobile technology. Optimus, which means “best” in Latin, will be comprised of devices ranging from entry to premium with various form factors to meet the unique needs of every customer. LG will be introducing approximately 10 new smart devices worldwide in the second half of this year under the LG Optimus Series label.

There is just one day left to take your place in history and submit your entry to the groundbreaking Life in a Day project!

For those unfamiliar with the project Life in a Day is the first of its kind, a user-generated film experiment where users submit footage shot on the 24^th of July capturing a moment of their lives from that day. Selected footage will be included in a feature length film directed by Academy Award Winning director Kevin MacDonald and produced by the legendary Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator. If having your footage in a film made by Kevin MacDonald and Ridley Scott wasn’t enough, all people who have their work included will be credited as co-directors and twenty lucky winners will even be flown to the premier at the famous Sundance Film Festival next January!

This year, the festivities took place in July at the Aalto Theater in Essen, where more than 1,600 companies from almost 60 countries displayed over 4,000 products. LG Electronics, now well established as a design innovator, received four winners’ awards and two honorable mentions.

Two new LG phones, the new Chocolate model (LG BL40) and the LG Mini (LG GD880), were among LG’s winners at this year’s red dot. The LG BL40, the fourth model in LG’s Black Label Series and also an award winner at iF Product Design 2010, boasts a 4-inch-wide panoramic HD LCD screen on an elegant, glassy body.

LG Mini, a pocket-size communication hub with a 3.2-inch full touchscreen, feels solid in the hand and is small enough to fit into any pocket. A button-free face contributes to the Mini’s simple and sleek personality, while textured metal accents on the sides add to the phone’s visual appeal without detracting from its clean look.

LG’s two other awards were won by the LX9500 and the LE7500, televisions from LG’s beautifully designed INFINIA range. With their sleek and sophisticated finish, the LX9500 and the LE7500 have a narrow bezel for images that absorb viewers right into the heart of the action. The design is a particular strength on the LX9500, the world’s first FULL LED 3D TV, whose narrow bezel lets 3D images practically burst through the edge of the screen.

LG’s two honorable mentions came courtesy of the F8102N, a T-slim digital photo frame, and the Tiara, a multi-cooking system microwave.

Developed by the LG Electronics Design Japan, the F8012N is designed to blend in seamlessly with any home or office décor, with a printed circuit board (PCB) nestled in the stand to ensure a slim, unobtrusive look. Within a sleek, modern deep-black frame, the F8021N excels equally when playing slideshows, music or video footage.

The Tiara was specifically designed to meet the needs of consumers in the United States, following extensive research into lifestyles and culinary habits.

Design Team of the Year 2010

The big winner this year was Hilti, a producer of construction equipment, whose designers were named Design Team of the Year 2010. Awarded to LG in 2006, the Design Team of the Year is given to companies whose innovative ideas set new standards in design.

Prior to the actual awards ceremony, red dot throws a gala dinner at its design museum, giving all the participants the chance to see the winning designs up close. With its solid design reputation, LG is now a regular fixture at the red dot awards and museum, and looks forward to many more appearances at award shows in the years ahead.

Let’s be honest, you didn’t really want to do it. It’s for kids wasting their time, too young to know better. But it’s everywhere; in your face 24/7 everywhere you go. That’s why you did it. That’s why you joined Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare or any of the other numerous social media sites out there! And to be honest, we joined them all too…

Well LG’s latest initiative is putting a fun spin on social media with the new ‘Socially Smarter’ campaign. The campaign is spread across idents for Channel4 and E4 (which can also be viewed on the dedicated YouTube channel) as well as with a specially created Facebook app and is designed to promote the new range of LG Smartphones.

The idents focus on the melodrama that can be present in the world of social media in the form of “The Young and the Connected” – a hilarious tongue in cheek take on American soap operas where the big dramas all revolve around social media. All idents are available on the YouTube page, which also features behind the scenes videos the cast preparing for their big onscreen dramas because Candy found out Trey poked both her and Tiffany on Facebook!!

The idents are only part of the Socially Smarter campaign – with a specially made and rather splendid app that can be added to your Facebook. It’s called the ‘Secret Drama’ application and analyses News Feed content and assigns different characters to your friends based on their Facebook activity. These include:

• The Gossip Girl – Posts most comments.
• The Keeno – Replies the quickest.
• The Groupie – ‘Likes’ your posts the most.
• The Slacker – Posts most during work hours.

Once a character has been assigned, the app allows you to notify your friend of their new ‘Secret Drama’ identity.

LG’s new ‘Socially Smarter’ campaign – bringing more drama into your life! is a post from: LG Blog

LG have teamed up with YouTube and the world famous filmmakers Ridley Scott and Kevin MacDonald in asking people around the world to help them create the first user generated feature length documentary shot in one day – the 24^th of July 2010. Life in a Day is a historic global film experiment that enlists the global community to capture a moment of their lives – Saturday the 24^th of July – and to upload that footage to www.youtube.com/lifeinaday.

The finished product will be directed by Kevin MacDonald, the Oscar winning director of the documentary ‘One Day in September’ and has since gone on to direct the Last King of Scotland and Touching the Void amongst other. He will bring together the most compelling footage into a feature length documentary that will be executive produced by Ridley Scott, the legendary director of Gladiator, Alien and Blade Runner, and produced by his company Scott Free productions. The individuals whose footage makes it into the finished film will be credited as co-directors and a further lucky twenty of those will be flown to the legendary Sundance Film Festival next January for the film’s world premiere.

YouTube have previously pushed the boundaries of music and art and are now turning their attention to film. The YouTube Symphony Orchestra and the recently announced YouTube Play partnership with the Guggenheim are examples of the convergence of online video with traditional arts and Life in a Day takes this effort into the cinematic realm. LG are supporting Life in a Day as part of the continued Life’s Good campaign and to support the creation of quality online content for the masses.

The director, Kevin Macdonald says of the project, “Life in a Day is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world’s online community.”

“Over the past five years, YouTube has changed the way media is created and consumed,” said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, YouTube’s parent company. “We’re thrilled to give our community the opportunity to work with Kevin Macdonald and Ridley Scott and are grateful to our long-term partner, the Sundance Institute, for their support of this global initiative. I can think of no better place to premiere Life in a Day than at next year’s festival.”

“A vital part of our mission is to support individual storytelling around the globe and to provide a platform for expression and experimentation,” says John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “This is a great way to engage the YouTube community and to also provide Festival audiences with something new and unexpected.”

A few weeks ago we told you about LG’s latest fridge freezer – the GB7143A2PW1. The futuristic looking LG Walkers paraded around the LG Arena prior to and during the breaks of the concert, interacting with fans using their screens to showcase new and upcoming technology. The LG Walkers were accompanied by ‘LG Mobile Experts’, members of the full time Mobile training team, who were on hand to add depth to the training and answer any questions that GaGa’s monsters may have had.

The purpose of the LG Walkers was to interact with as many people as possible with a focus on the LG Optimus GT540 Android powered Smartphone. With over 50,000 apps available for download and social networking capabilities that can support a number of accounts this is an exciting product, which generated interest from over 1,000 fans of all ages on the night. If this wasn’t enough the LG Walkers were also offering the chance to win one of 10 new LG Optimus GT540 Android handsets. The Lucky winners have now been selected and are now listed here.

The LG Walkers introduce the new LG Optimus phone to Lady GaGa’s fans at the LG Arena Birmingham is a post from: LG Blog

Displaybank has estimated that 6.2m 3D TVs will ship in 2010, a relatively small 3% share of all TV shipments. This is predicted to steadily rise to 31%, or 83m, in 2014. New technology will always have its cynics, but with PS3 and Xbox360 committing to 3D gaming, sales of 3DTVs can only be set to rise.

At this year’s CES Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said that Xbox 360 was fully compatible with 3D in terms of technology. But he also questioned the level of interest around 3D gaming, stating “I think right now we’re unsure what level of interest there is from consumers to really want a 3D experience in the living room. Many, many years from now when it becomes a reality, we absolutely can support it, we do support it today. If developers want to make more 3D games, they can.”

At LG’s recent Mini CES event at the Haymarket Hotel they had the passive technology LD950 set up with an Xbox360 playing Avatar the game. Naturally I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this and spent more than my fair share of time playing this. Having experienced 3D on the LD950 before it always struck me that it is the wider shots that really show the excellence of 3D as a technology, and with Avatar this was also the case. Avatar is a third person perspective game so you really do get to see the advantages of 3D as you run around Pandora. The scenery in 3D looks stunning and really adds to the immersive quality of the game, and with the LD950’s use of passive technology the cost of glasses is low so you can really enjoy this game with a lot of friends.

Xbox 360 in 3D with LG is a post from: LG Blog

LG have a whole host of great Home Entertainment solutions being released in time for the upcoming summer of sport. This includes both passive and active 3D offerings as well as a great range of Plasma, LCD and LED TVs. In order to show these great pieces of tech in a real home environment LG set up the ‘LG Home’, a townhouse at London’s Haymarket Hotel with each room set up with a difference piece of high-end technology. On the Thursday night of this event, a lucky group of guys were invited down to try out some of the technology first hand at Men’s’ Night.

The LX9900 was in use to show off all the great features it has including being the only Full LED backlit 3D on the market, the Netcast feature and the motion remote control. The LX9900 was also used for a Forza Motorsport tournament on Xbox 360, with the winner walking away with a full 3D Home Entertainment System.

If this wasn’t enough gaming for the Men’s Night team there was also Avatar in 3D on the LD950 passive 3DTV. This was where passive technology really came into play, as with a big group of people you wouldn’t have to spend a fortune to ensure everyone had a pair of 3D glasses so they could watch you explore Pandora in 3D.

The night was crowned with as much pizza as you could possibly eat, the Liverpool game on the PK990 plasma TV and a beer tasting with the head brewer of Shepherd Neame brewery. Truly a Life’s Good evening.

LG Home – Men’s Night is a post from: LG Blog

Two of the most popular pieces of tech on display were the LX9900 active shutter 3DTV and the LD950 polarized (or passive) 3DTV.

We will start with the LD950 as this is the technology more of you will be familiar with as it is the kind currently used in pubs across the country to show football in 3D, as well as in the cinema for 3D films like Avatar. Polarized 3D works by projecting 2 images at once, one for the left eye and one for the right. Each lens has a filter only allowing a certain image in, blocking the light polarized in the opposite direction, with each eye only seeing a specific image and creating the illusion of 3D.

At the LG House the LD950 was set-up in the second bedroom with an Xbox 360 playing Avatar the game in 3D. LG are the only company releasing a polarized 3D option to the UK market currently

Pros:

The cost of the glasses is the real benefit of passive 3D. It really is a technology that you can share with your friends, as additional pairs of glasses will cost you little more than a few pounds per pair. Perfect for having your friends round for the world cup.  Other pros are that passive 3D TVs deliver a very comfortable viewing experience and you don’t have to worry about charging the glasses as the technology is inside the TV.

Cons:

Because polarization requires that each eye only sees half the pixels on screen, it cannot achieve the Full HD picture to each eye that active 3D TVs can provide.

The LX9900 is LG’s active 3DTV option released this year. Active technology works differently from the polarized option, with the technology being centered mainly in the 3D glasses as opposed to the TV itself. The glasses receive signals from the TV, and create the 3D effect by blocking one lens then the other in sync with the TV’s refresh rate.

At the LG House the 55” LX9900 was set up in the living room with a complete home cinema set up including the BX580. The LX9900 also has the advantage of being the only full backlit LED 3DTV to be released this year, ensuring excellent picture quality in both 2D and 3D modes!

Pros:

The use of the active shutter glasses ensures a rich stereoscopy without a reduction in pixels or light with each eye receiving full 1080p.

Cons:

Due to the technology being within the glasses, they are expensive to produce and retail for much higher in comparison to the polarized glasses. Industry experts do anticipate this price to come down as the technology matures though. LG are one of the only retailers to include a number of active shutter glasses with their active 3DTV to keep the peripheral costs down.

LG are honouring their commitment to new technology with the UK release of their 15” OLED TV. The EL9500 is currently being previewed at the Gadget Show Live this week giving tech fans the opportunity to be the first to view it in the UK.

OLED ensures a superior picture quality from any angle with a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 whilst simultaneously using less energy when compared with a regular LED TV. Instead of the traditional LED backlight OLED is self illuminating, allowing for a much thinner design resulting in a stunning looking ultra thin design. This absence of a backlight also results in much deeper blacks against stronger colours as well as a response time of 0.1msec making it ideal for viewing fast action films and sports. Not to mention it is also water resistant making it ideal for use in the bathroom or kitchen without fear of water damage.

Having attended the press day of the Gadget Show Live on Wednesday I have to say how impressed I was with the OLED. A lot is made about the thinness of OLED technology, offering a second to none super slim design. But what really impressed me was the picture quality. The vibrancy of the colours was better than literally any other TV or monitor I had seen before. This is undoubtedly a serious piece of tech and definitely worth your time having a look at if you’re attending the Gadget Show Live this weekend.

Being big fans of Tom Scott’s work we asked him to come up with a fun video using nothing but 2 VIP Lady GaGa tickets and some LG GW620 InTouch Max phones. So Tom devised ‘The Lady GaGa Race’. The idea is simple, get in touch with 2 friends either side of the country and tell them the first person to reach him at the LG Arena Birmingham wins a VIP ticket to see GaGa and the loser gets left out in the cold. Each friend was kitted out with an LG InTouch Max phone, LG’s first Android phone, and were given a crash course in using it as well as being shown the apps that would be most useful to navigate their way there. The resulting video is a hilarious battle between rail and road, as Tom’s friends race each other armed with nothing but brains, cunning and an LG InTouch Max.

I caught up with Tom recently and asked him a few questions about the challenge.

Who did you think would make it to the show first?

I honestly didn’t know. The race was designed to be close; it came down to how fast Sam could get across London and how badly Matt would be affected by traffic!


Do you think the outcome reflects the state of our publicised rail network?

Aside from a two minute delay on a 300-mile journey, the rail network worked perfectly. Sam could have won if she hadn’t made a wrong turn when she left the arena…

Were you tempted to try and sneak into the background of the stage like you did on Breaking the News?

There was so much backstage security. Quite a few people, I’m told, tried to sneak in – and there were fans who didn’t even have tickets waiting around hoping to catch a glimpse. It wouldn’t have worked! There is an outtake, though, where one of the Lady Gaga fans crashed the back of my shot. What goes around comes around!


Was one app more useful than the other?

Google Latitude was fantastic for me – I knew more-or-less where everyone was… even if it did once say Matt was in a lake!

In this weeks Gadget Show web.tv episode, Jon Bentley puts the LG InTouch Max GW620 through its paces. His review highlights the value for money of the GW620, citing the QWERTY keyboard, the 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5 mm headphone socket and the range of connectivity as just some of the bonuses. He does ring up the resistive touchscreen and use of android 1.5 as drawbacks, but concedes that none of the flaws are big enough to defeat the proposition of the phone, namely a Smartphone that won’t break the bank! At just 3mm in thickness at it’s narrowest point it truly is a stunning television and, as pointed out, it is looking likely that it is soon to be the only OLED on the market in the world! The Bristol Sound & Vision show is the country’s largest AV show and promises to be a highlight of the year for any fan of technology.
