Quarterly Results Reflect Record-High Flat Panel TV Shipments,
Strong Appliances Revenues and Profitable Mobile Business

LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced fourth quarter 2011 consolidated revenues of KRW 13.81 trillion (USD 12.05 billion) with an operating profit of KRW 23 billion (USD 20 million). Quarter-on-quarter revenue growth reflected strong performance in home entertainment and home appliances with improved operating profit in the mobile and TV businesses.

Unaudited consolidated financial results, based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the period ending Dec. 31, 2011, showed a net loss of KRW 112 billion (USD 97.73 million) in the quarter, primarily due to a loss on investments in affiliated companies and net financial expense.

Full-year 2011 consolidated revenues reached KRW 54.26 trillion (USD 48.97 billion). Despite a 2011 net loss of KRW 433 billion (USD 391 million), operating profits improved significantly to KRW 280 billion (USD 253 million) from KRW 176 billion (USD 153 million) for full-year 2010.

The LG Home Entertainment Company shipped a record high 8.8 million flat panel TVs from October to December, increasing revenues 17.6 percent from the previous quarter to KRW 6.31 trillion (USD 5.5 billion). While quarterly sales declined modestly from the 2010 period, a strong 2011 holiday season and more premium product mix led by CINEMA 3D TV resulted in an operating profit of KRW 150 billion (USD 130.9 million) in the fourth quarter of 2011. Full-year 2011 home entertainment sales were KRW 22.38 trillion (USD 20.2 billion) with operating profit of KRW 423 billion (USD 382 million). For 2012, LG will continue strengthening its position in 3D and Smart TVs with a broadened line of TVs with Cinema Screen design and quality content.

The LG Mobile Communications Company improved its position in the fourth quarter with operating profits of KRW 12 billion (USD 10 million) and sales of KRW 2.78 trillion (USD 2.42 billion) on the strength of premium smartphones such as Optimus LTE (Long Term Evolution). For full-year 2011, the company posted sales of KRW
11.69 trillion (USD 10.55 billion), a decline of 9.9 percent from 2010. For 2012, the company will continue to strengthen its position by focusing on strategic markets with expanded smartphone line-up led by LTE smartphones.

The LG Home Appliance Company posted record-high quarterly sales of KRW 2.99 trillion (USD 2.6 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2011 with strong growth in Korea, the U.S. and developing countries with more energy-efficient products. Modestly lower operating profit of KRW 65 billion (USD 57 million) in the fourth quarter reflected increased raw material costs and unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Total 2011 home appliance sales were KRW 11.11 trillion (USD 10.03 billion) with operating profit of KRW 295 billion (USD 266 million). New energy efficient appliances being introduced around the world this year are expected to contribute to 2012 revenue growth.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solutions Company reported sales of KRW 680 billion (USD 593 million) in the fourth quarter, essentially flat with the 2010 fourth quarter. An operating loss of KRW 38 billion (USD 33 million) was attributed to negative macroeconomic issues and product mix weakness in developing markets. For full-year 2011, the company recorded air conditioning and energy solutions revenues of KRW 4.56 trillion (USD 4.11 billion) and operating profit of KRW 58 billion (USD 52 million). The company is increasing its focus on high-efficiency air conditioning systems to help drive sales in 2012.

LG Electronics (LG) announced that it won a total of nine awards at 2012 the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), further solidifying its position as a leader in developing cutting-edge products. Honors include the Popular Mechanics Editors’ Choice, IMS Research TV Innovation Award, multiple HD Guru Awards, and the prestigious CNET Best of Show.

In addition to being selected as the best HDTV at CES by CNET, the LG 55EM9600 OLED HDTV was chosen by CNET’s unbiased, expert editors as the most exciting, innovative, and promising new product at the show.

“CNET editors from around the globe have spent a grueling and inspiring six days pounding the pavement in Las Vegas to get our hands on thousands of tech products,” said Lindsey Turrentine, Editor in Chief of CNET Reviews. ”We lugged our laptops and cameras for miles, across the show floors, through launch parties, and to closed-door meetings. We found the gadgets of tomorrow — and after sorting through them all–chose LG for our hard-fought Best of CES award.”

In addition to the CNET Awards, LG was honored with the following:

HD Guru Top Picks awards
•	Best Media Player – LG SP820 Smart Upgrader
•	Best 3D TV – LG 84LM9600 84-inch 3DTV

Using self-lighted organic pixels, the 55-in screen class (54.6-inch diagonal) OLED TV exhibits precise color, absolute contrast and blazing clarity. Boasting a contrast ratio of over 100,000,000:1, fifty times greater than that of LED/LCD display panels, the OLED TV displays vivid colors and the fine details, helping to preserve images with utmost clarity and sharpness, even when displaying scenes with dark lighting. Since the OLED TV does not require a lamp or bulky support structures, it is 4mm (3/16ths of an inch) thin and weighs only 16.5 pounds.

The 84LM9600 is the world’s largest Ultra Definition (UD) 3D TV LG’s 3D and boasts an impressively large 84-inch class (84.04 inch diagonal) screen and superb picture quality with 8 million pixels, four times the resolution of existing Full HD TV panels. Combined with LG’s Cinema Screen slim and narrow bezel, which reduces the TV’s frame to negligible levels, the 3D UD TV provides a most immersive 3D viewing expe-rience.

The SP820 Smart TV Upgrader easily turns any HDTV into a Smart TV, including access to streaming services from Vudu, Amazon Instant Video, and Cinema Now, among others. With HTML 5 and Flash, there is also a full Internet browser as well as intuitive navigation with the enhanced LG Magic Remote.

LG’s BH9420PW, is a “3D Sound” home theater system, incorporating LG’s 3D sound technology with a state-of-the-art Blu-ray system. The BH9420PW enhances the 3D experience by adding a dimension of height to the audio field and uses 3D Sound Zooming to synchronize the audio with 3D picture depth when playing back 3D video from Blu-ray discs and broadcast sources.

The Blast Chiller takes room-temperature beverages, such as wine or soda cans and quickly cools them; it can chill a 12-ounce can in around five minutes as well as two soft drink cans or bottle of wine in eight minutes. Quick chilling is enabled by Jet Flow and Swirling Structure, which decreases the temperature and distributes the chilled air throughout the chiller compartment.

These awards follow the CES Innovations Awards where LG was honored with 12 awards, including the Best of Innovations for Major Home Appliances for the LFX31935 refrigerator with Blast Chiller technology; for Video Displays the PM9700 plasma, LM9600 and LM8600 LED HDTVs; for Video Components the BP720 Blu-ray Disc™ Player and SP820 Smart TV Upgrader; for Audio Components the ND8520 iPod Speaker Dock; for Major Home Appliances the WM8000HVA/DLEX8000V and WM9000HVA/ DLEX9000V washer/dryer pairs that feature LG Smart ThinQ™ and LrV5900 HOM-BOT Robotic Vacuum; for Wireless Handsets, the LG DoublePlay and LG Revolution with VMware Horizon Mobile™.

Google TV & Smart TV
LG continues to lead the way with connected entertainment in the home, expanding its award-winning offer in a global partnership with Google (planned to launch in the UK in 2013). LG’s bespoke Smart TV platform is also set to be further improved with the introduction of even more premium content services. Built-in Wi-Fi in over 70 per cent of this year’s range and a new and improved Magic Remote, which has additional Voice Recognition technology and a Browser Wheel, promises to make LG’s Smart TV easier than ever to enjoy.
LG’s improved Smart Share 2.0 is driving further innovation in connected TV by making multi-screen viewing even simpler, enabling users to access content where and when they want to. Over 50 per cent of LG’s TV line-up will feature Smart TV functionality, reflecting the brand’s continued belief in the future of the connected home.

Smart TV Upgraders
This year also sees the launch of two Smart TV Upgraders (SP520 in March and SP820 in May), offering users the opportunity to access the LG Smart TV platform from any TV with a HDMI connection.
Stephen Gater, Consumer Electronics Marketing Director, commented: “Driving technological innovation with premium quality is at the heart of everything we do at LG. Unveiling the world’s largest OLED TV today is just one example of our commitment to be the first-to-market leaders in our field.

“LG is globally recognised for its cutting-edge technologies. We’re excited about our line-up this year – our premium range of new stylish TVs offers a true statement of style that people will be proud of having as the hub of their home.”

LG Electronics (LG) will introduce the CINEMA SCREEN Design at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Featured in the new CINEMA 3D Smart TVs for 2012, CINEMA SCREEN Design reduces the bezel to just 1 mm, creating a more optimal and comfortable environment for immersive 3D viewing.

“The 3D experience is still evolving and we at LG intend to push the limits of what 3D can deliver,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “With our 2012 CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, we have been able to take a significant step forward, thanks to a series of new and upgraded 3D features led by the CINEMA SCREEN Design.”

The CINEMA SCREEN Design translates the latest advances in LG’s display technology into an aesthetically superior form. Bezels that surround the new CINEMA 3D Smart TVs have been slimmed down to negligible levels, removing physical obstructions to allow greater immersion of 3D effects, reminiscent of movie screens at cinemas.

The CINEMA SCREEN Design is accompanied by new CINEMA 3D glasses for 2012. Presented in three elegant models, the new CINEMA 3D glasses are 20 per cent lighter than the previous ones, increasing their comfort to allow longer 3D viewing.

Such optimal setting for immersive 3D viewing is complemented by a range of new 3D technologies. Using the theory of 3D TV technology, Dual Play is the solution for an ultimate gaming experience. With LG’s Dual Play function and the special Dual Play glasses, players see two entirely different full images, as opposed to the traditional split screen, where each player has to focus on half the screen. Meanwhile, 3D Sound Zooming generates audio output that is synchronised with the location and movement of the various on-screen objects, so immersive sound can complement immersive visuals.

As always, the new CINEMA 3D Smart TVs come equipped with LG’s Smart TV function. Featuring over 1,200 apps, LG’s Smart TV offers a variety of premium content services, including 3D World, where viewers can access a growing abundance of 3D content. Furthermore, the built-in 2D to 3D conversion engine makes 3D content practically limitless.

All aforementioned features of the new CINEMA 3D Smart TVs will be available for viewing at CES 2012 in Las Vegas starting on January 10, 2012.

LG Electronics (LG) will introduce its highly anticipated Google TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. LG Smart TV with Google TV combines the familiarity of Google’s Android OS with the convenience and comfort of LG’s 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and attractive home entertainment option.

“LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Through Google TV, LG has merged Google’s established Android operating system with LG’s proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience.”

LG’s Google TV’s most attractive feature is its ease of use, thanks to the combination of its Android-based user interface and the Magic Remote Qwerty designed by LG. LG’s Google TV’s user interface and main screen have been designed for convenient browsing and content selection. Multi-tasking is also possible, as the search, social networking and TV functions can run simultaneously. The user interface can be accessed using the Magic Remote Qwerty which combines the user-friendly benefits of LG’s Magic Remote with a QWERTY keyboard.

Equipped with LG’s own CINEMA 3D technology, Google TV provides a home entertainment experience that is immersive, comfortable and convenient. Based on LG’s own Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, CINEMA 3D glasses are battery-free, comfortable and lightweight. The glasses are also very affordable, making LG’s Google TV ideal for viewing by a large group of family and friends when used in 3D mode. And with a single click of the remote, any 2D program or movie can be viewed in 3D, thanks to the built-in 2D to 3D conversion engine.

Alongside Google TV, LG will continue to advance its own Smart TV platform based on NetCast, which will be available in more than 60 per cent of LG’s flat panel TVs scheduled for introduction over the coming year. With a growing collection of content and services, LG’s Smart TV platform will continue to provide consumers with a unique user experience.

The first demonstration of LG’s Google TV will take place at the LG Electronics Press Conference on 9th January, launching to consumers in the US in 2012 and availability in the UK planned for 2013.

Google TV is a new experience that combines TV, the web, and apps – as well as a way to search across them all. Because some things are better on a big screen.

LG Electronics (LG) will present the future of TV technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas with the unveiling of the world’s largest OLED TV with a display size of 55 inches. By incorporating the company’s 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner features with LG Display’s advanced OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels, LG OLED TV generates the most natural colors of any TV set at a much lower price point than could have been achieved using the standard manufacturing process.

“Working closely with LG Display, we have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost than what could be achieved using existing OLED manufacturing technologies,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace.”

What sets LG’s TV picture apart from other OLED TVs is 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner which work together to generate natural and accurate colors that are sharp and consistent. The 4-Color Pixels feature allows for more accurate color depiction by using a set of four colors (red, green blue and white) in comparison to the RGB setup used by other OLED TV manufacturers. Color Refiner ensures consistency in colors from a wider viewing angle via an LG algorithm which improves and refines hues and tones. This is in contrast to other OLED TVs which often exhibit drastic changes in hues from different viewing angles and abnormal color gamut.

Boasting an infinite contrast ratio, LG’s OLED TV exhibits vivid colors and the smallest details regardless of the overall luminance of the on-screen image. In turn, colors and details throughout an entire image are preserved with utmost clarity and sharpness, even when displaying scenes with dark lighting. Such color capabilities are technically impossible with LED and LCD display panels. And at 1,000 times faster than LED/LCD displays, LG’s OLED TV shows crystal clear motion without any blurring or bleeding.

And LG’s OLED TV is as aesthetically pleasing as it is technologically sophisticated. LG’s Slim and Narrow Bezel design gives the TV a sleek, minimal look and at only 4 mm thin and a mere 7.5 kg, LG’s OLED TV practically blends into the wall.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil the world’s largest 3D Ultra Definition (UD) TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. By combining LG’s industry-leading 3D technology and Smart TV function with UD display technology, the 84-inch TV breaks new ground in immersive 3D home entertainment.

“LG is pushing the limits of home entertainment innovation with this 3D UD TV,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “We are bringing together all our Smart TV and 3D knowledge in the 3D UD TV in order to demonstrate to the CES audience that LG is committed to being the world’s leading brand for immersive home entertainment in 2012 and beyond.”

LG’s 3D UD TV boasts superb picture quality with 8 million pixels, four times the resolution clarity (3840×2160) of existing Full HD TV panels. Combined with LG’s Slim and Narrow Bezel Design, the 3D UD TV provides the most convincing 3D viewing experience currently available outside of a movie theater. What’s more, 3D Depth Control allows users to customize their viewing experience by controlling the 3D effect while 3D Sound Zooming provides users with 3D sound that rivals the output of all but the best home theater systems.

Via the superior display panel, users can access LG’s Smart TV ecosystem, which comprises over 1,200 apps and gives users access to a growing range of premium content services such as the 3D Zone where viewers can select from a wealth of 3D movies. The imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expands the availability of 3D content to limitless levels. Users can easily browse and navigate the Smart TV ecosystem using LG’s new, ergonomically-designed Magic Remote which now recognizes four different types of command input: Voice Recognition, Wheel, Magic Gesture and Point.

LG Electronics (LG) has announced that its newest collection of 3D glasses, including a pair designed by renowned eyewear designer Alain Mikli, will be introduced in the first quarter of 2012. The new 3D glasses — the F310, the clip-on F320 and the Alain Mikli F360 — are lighter and more comfortable to wear while upgraded design features such as curved lenses and clean frame structure have transitioned 3D glasses from burdensome requirements to stylish fashion accessories.

“Compared to active shutter glasses, LG’s 3D glasses are far more comfortable to wear and much more affordable, making it possible for large groups and entire families to watch 3D programs and movies together,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG is addressing two of the biggest barriers to 3D acceptance head-on and we’re confident consumers will react favorably to our strategy in the coming year.”

The F310 is characterized by a distinctive design that combines soft lines within a slim frame. Unlike many previous 3D glasses, the lenses have been curved to better accommodate the shape of the wearer’s face, as well as to improve the overall CINEMA 3D viewing experience. The F310 weighs a mere 13.5 grams, making it 20 percent lighter than LG’s previous design.

Another new item for 2012 includes the clip-on F320. Clip-on 3D glasses are unique to 3D TVs based on Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, which is at the heart of CINEMA 3D TV. Compared to the previous generation clip-on 3D glasses, the F320 weighs 25 percent less at 5.5 grams.

Developed in collaboration with Alain Mikli, the F360’s half-rim frame design is sportier and only weighs 16 grams. The lenses of the F360 have been curved and cover most of the wearer’s face, deepening the immersive CINEMA 3D experience. The stylish F360, as well as all 3D glasses from LG, can also worn in theaters showing 3D movies since both CINEMA 3D and theaters utilize the same FPR and RealD technologies.

LG’s share of the global 3D TV market increased from 7.6 percent during the first quarter of 2011 to 14 percent by September. FPR’s unobtrusive technology played a key role in the company’s success in 3D TVs, as uncomfortable and expensive glasses have been identified in numerous studies as being the number one reason consumers have been reluctant to adopt 3D in the home.

LG plans to continue the success it saw this year by sponsoring a series of 3D film and gaming events in 2012 in order to introduce the CINEMA 3D experience to thousands of participants and visitors.

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil its 2012 IPS monitor line-up at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month. LG’s new IPS monitors will provide consumers with the most optimal 3D viewing solution, offering immersive 3D viewing with higher resolutions from wider viewing angles. The new IPS monitors are divided into the DM92, DM82 and DM52 series, in addition to the D43 3D monitor.

“The quality and technological superiority of LG’s 3D display products are second to none, according to the findings of internationally renowned research organizations and respected media outlets,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “The 2011 IPS monitor line-up shows LG’s commitment to further build upon on this reputation and technological prowess in order to provide consumers with the most immersive home entertainment experience possible.”

The DM92 series showcases a premium design by employing the slim bezel of LG’s technology- and design-driven CINEMA SCREEN whose aesthetic superiority is accompanied by the lustrous chrome stand. Through the monitor TV’s attractive 27-inch display, users can access files on their PC, play games or simply kick back and watch their favorite TV shows. The DM92 series is also optimized for enjoying exciting 3D content. By incorporating an IPS panel, the DM92 series enables greater depth, consistent color and brightness at wider viewing angles compared with conventional 3D displays.

The 23-inch DM82 series exhibits a chic and futuristic design, employing a metallic neck supported by a square, slim base. The 3D display quality is among the industry’s best, with superior color tone from any viewing angle. The beautiful images are accompanied by 7-watt built-in speakers, enabling the DM82 to function as a comprehensive entertainment centerpiece.

The 27- and 23-inch DM52 series offers versatility and efficiency in a flexible package. Combining immersive 3D with IPS, the DM52 series comes equipped with a range of connectivity features, such as HDMI and USB, for content-sharing with external devices.

Optimized for 3D, LG’s D43 monitor offers a host of new technologies and features. The monitor ensures bright 3D images as well as SUPER Resolution and vivid colors through the 3D effect mode. The D43 easily converts 2D content into 3D without any additional software. A 3D hot key enables users to easily adjust and control the depth of 3D images.

LG’s new 2012 IPS monitor line-up will be available globally starting February 2012.

If 2010 will be remembered as the year that 3D took the step from the cinema into homes, then 2011 will be remembered as the year that LG pioneered the way with their Cinema 3D technology.

Currently the only manufacturer offering ‘passive’ or Cinema 3D as well as ‘active’ 3D, LG are offering consumers a choice, but the emphasis is certainly on Cinema 3D. The reason behind this is as a result of a year’s experience of 3D retail under the belt combined with a survey that showed 88% of viewers preferred the Cinema 3D experience to active 3D.

What is Cinema 3D?

The name says it all really – Cinema 3D is the closest you can get to the 3D experience you enjoy in the cinema in your own home. It uses the same glasses that are used in the cinema as the technology is housed within the TV, rather than in the glasses as with active 3D, meaning the glasses are lighter, cheaper and more comfortable weighing in at just 16 grams.

The screens on LG’s range of Cinema 3D TVs are equipped with LG’s proprietary Film-type Patterned Retarder Panel, or FPR for short. This panel optimizes the separation of images into an image for the left eye and one for the right that are then filtered through the Cinema 3D glasses to give the 3D effect.

Putting the advantages of the glasses aside, Cinema 3D also has the advantage of not suffering with flicker that can be seen on some active 3D TVs. LG’s LW6500 Cinema 3D screen that was unveiled at CES 2011 has even been awarded a “Flicker-free” certificate from Intertek and TUV, two of the most-recognised and respected inspection and certification bodies in the world. The LW6500 is the first 3DTV to receive this accolade!

What does the future hold for 3D?

Whilst we can confirm that LG are working on glasses-free 3D, we can also say that this is a product for the future. In the meantime LG’s new range of TVs, including several 3D Cinema options will be released in April, alongside a range of active 3D Plasma screens giving the consumer the choice. Read more about the 3D range here

Regular readers of the blog will know that early January belongs to the Consumer Electronics Show – the most important three days annually on any techies calendar. Taking place annually in Las Vegas, CES is the place where the world’s tech titans come together to impress the crowds and dictate the course of technology over the next year. Naturally LG were present and by all accounts it was a good year, with plenty of positive media buzz matched with an impressive haul of CES innovation awards.

Best of Innovations Awards: NANO Full LED 3D Smart TV (LW9500)

In the first of several awards for the Home Entertainment team, LG’s top-of-the-range LW9500 NANO Full LED Active 3DTV scooped a prestigious “Best of Innovations Award”. Packing LG’s unique NANO technology provides an extra bright sheen to its FULL LED backlighting, whilst the LW9500’s ultra-narrow bezel makes it a stylish accompaniment to any room. The LW9500 also won plaudits for its quick and easy access to online content.

Innovations Awards: Smart TV Platform (LW9500)

2011 was the year that Smart TV really made its presence felt at CES and LG won another Innovation Award in the online and video content section for it’s Smart TV platform on the LW9500. LG’s offering stood out thanks to a simple, intuitive interface that makes its high technology easy for anyone to use. LG’s Smart TV also benefits from a fast-growing range of apps that cover everything from lifestyle and education to entertainment and games. Additionally the Smart Share function lets users wirelessly stream content from compatible devices direct to the television screen, while also serving up meta data, such as synopses and actor profiles for the content you are watching.

Innovations Awards: NANO FULL LED 3D Smart TV (LW7700)

Packing NANO Technology, the LW7700’s high-definition, cinema standard picture has received THX certification, the gold standard for cinema-quality TV. The LW770 also boasts all the benefits and functions of LG’s Smart TV technology.

Innovations Awards: 3D PDP TV (PW350)

With an ultra-narrow bezel maximizing the screen display and an elegant frame and stand, the PW350 is a truly visually arresting TV.

Once the TV is turned on, the PW350 shows its real power, with 3D images staying smooth even during the fastest action sequences. Combine this with LG’s patented 3D XD Engine and you have a 3D picture of startling brightness and clarity.

Innovations Awards: Portable Media Player (BP650)

At just 1.6 inches in width, the BP650 is the ultimate in portable performance. Playing Blu-ray™ in beautiful HD on a 9-inch screen is not its only trick, as users can also enjoy online content through a wired network, adding even more tools and applications to the BP560’s impressive repertoire.

Innovations Awards: Home Theater System (HX996TS)

A CES Innovation Honoree for excellence in the category of Integrated Home Systems, the HX996TS uses innovative new sound excellence to take sound into the third dimension. Optimized to offer 3D sound for 3D movies, this 3D Sound Home Theater uses dual subwoofers and special tallboy speakers that completely fill the space above viewers’ heads, creating the illusion they are right in the thick of the movie.

Innovations Awards: Monitor (E2290V), Optical Disc Drive (BP40LS20)

In computer accessories, the LG E2290V, an ultra-slim monitor, and the LG BP40LS20, an external Blu-ray Disc™ drive, also earned Honorees of the Innovations Awards.

With a 10 million to 1 contrast ratio, the E2290V, offers crystal clear images and a lightning fast 2ms response time that keeps images smooth, even during the fastest games or movies. It is also packed with eco-friendly features including lower energy consumption – as much as 40 percent less than with conventional CCFL-backlit LCD monitors.

The LG BP40LS20 is the first optical disc drive with BDXL, offering new standards in Blu-ray™ technology.

Innovations Awards: Home Appliances

Rounding off an impressive Honoree list from LG is a trio of the company’s outstanding steam washers.

The WM3885HCCA is a highly-efficient front load Steamwasher™ based on LG’s Inverter Direct Drive technology, complete with major improvements in capacity, energy, efficiency and durability. This all results in a clean as thorough and delicate as if it had been washed by hand. As both an energy and cost saving advantage the WM3885HCA’s Coldwash™ technology uses cold water to penetrate into fabrics, which when combined with the 6 Motion technology, results in the same washing performance as washing in warm water.

Key to LG’s success within the Home Appliance category is the combination of LG’s Inverter Drive and 6 Motion technologies, the latter of which lets the drum tailor each cycle to clothes’ precise needs, using a mixture of rolling, stepping, swinging, scrubbing, filtration and tumbling. These technologies are both found on LG’s high efficiency top-load laundry pair, the WT5101HV and DLEX5101V and ensures an extremely gentle wash for delicates or a more powerful cleanse for soiled items.

Using Truesteam™ and Inverter Drive™ technologies, LG’s new Steam Dishwasher (LDF9942ST) delivers excellent, simple cleaning while consuming less energy and water. LG’s Truesteam™ Generator, the only built-in steam generator of any dishwasher, creates high-intensity steam that dissolves even the toughest residue. A highly water efficient function in itself, the Truesteam™ Generator also does away with the need to manually pre-rinse dishes, thereby helping save water. What’s more, the Inverter Drive™ motor makes the LG dishwasher one of the most energy-efficient, high-performance lines in the industry.

And that’s it for another year, the techies moved on and Las Vegas was soon back to its normal, ebullient ways.

In a year when ‘smartness’ and integration were crucial, LG played a key role in shaping that picture with innovations that embraced some of the most impressive elements yet seen in smart consumer technology. The show may be over, but the buzz around LG for another year has only just begun.

With CES over for another year it is time to stop, catch our breath and have a look at all the technology and innovation that was unveiled in another successful year at CES. LG took home awards in 9 categories including a much-coveted “Best of Innovations” award for its 3D ready, Internet-connected 55-inch full LED LW9500 HDTV.

Smart Upgrader ST600

‘Smart’ was introduced as one of the key themes for LG at this year’s show, with Smart phones, Smart Home Appliances and Smart TV on display. Whilst this was undoubtedly a theme shared by a lot of manufacturers exhibiting, LG caught a lot of eyes with their ST600 Smart upgrader. Essentially the ST600 is a peripheral box that is plugged into any television with a HDMI port and gives access to LG’s Smart TV content, including access to thousands of movies, customisable apps, videos and the ability to browse the Web through an easy to navigate interface. Indications for the UK point toward Smart TV allowing access to BBC i-Player, Acetrax, Viewster, Google Maps, Twitter, Facebook, Accuweather and Picasa amongst numerous others*.

The ST600 Smart Upgrader was also listed by Esquire Magazine as one of their ‘Best of CES 2011’ products.

Optimus Black

One of LG’s most talked about products unveiled was the LG Optimus Black handset. Part of LG’s Optimus smart phone family, the Optimus Black is a stylish and super slim smart phone running Android 2.2, but with a promise to receive 2.3 before long.

One of the big talking points surrounding the Optimus Black is the screen, more specifically the brightness of the screen. Using LG’s proprietary NOVA technology the Optimus Black promises the brightest screen ever kicking out 700nits of luminosity, whilst also promising a 50% reduction on power consumption when used indoors in comparison to a standard LCD display.

Smart Grid

Sticking with the Smart theme, Home Appliances were also given the Smart makeover this year, with plenty of new technology on display. But it was the LG Smart Grid that had us salivating at the prospect of controlling our home appliances remotely using a smartphone or a tablet. Undoubtedly one for the future, but amazing nonetheless, Smart Grid links your appliances including dishwasher, washer & dryer, refrigerator, oven and even a HOM-BOT robotic vacuum cleaner. The Smart Grid will then let the appliances work together for economical and practical reasons. For example, using Smart Grid LG washing machines can program washing machines to do the washing at the most cost effective time, utilising the “Recommend Time” and “Lowest Rate” options. In a similar way LG’s refrigerators can adjust their functions to save on energy bills at peak times, or ramp up cooling power when energy rates are low.

The World’s Largest Full LED 3D TV

Named by T3 magazine as one of the ‘Best 3D Gadgets of CES 2011’ the LZ9700 is the biggest Full LED 3D TV in the world today measuring in at a living-room remodeling 72inches.

Aside from the obvious jaw-dropping effect of its size, the LZ9700 is packed full of features including 400Hz, Smart TV and a Magic Motion Remote Control as standard.

Super Slim LED Monitor E2290V

The CES Innovations Award-Winning E2290V monitor is sure to be the must-have monitor for the year to come. Measuring in at an unbeatably slim 7.2mm in depth, the E2290V not only offers a great picture due to its LED lighting and 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, but also a stylish design.

With a response time of just 2 milliseconds and Full HD 1080p, the picture on the E2290V will remain clear and bright even during the fastest action sequences making it ideal for watching Blu-ray movies or gaming.

* Content partners may vary by product category.

At CES 2011 LG demonstrated its newest steam dishwasher, complete with LG’s own innovative TrueSteam™ technology, designed to deliver excellent cleaning results.

Thanks to LG’s proprietary built-in TrueSteam™ generator, the Steam Power cycle creates powerful steam that can dissolve the toughest residue, leaving dishes spotless without the need for pre-washing by hand. There is also a Steam Delicate cycle that uses TrueSteam™ to remove stubborn stains like lipstick without danger of damaging or scratching delicate items like china or stemware.

The dishwasher is also highly energy efficient due to LG’s Inverter Direct Drive™ motor, cutting energy use by up to 71% compared to standard Energy Star-certified dishwashers. It also makes washing and draining quieter than ever, with noise levels of 42 decibels, some of the quietest in its category. The Inverter Direct Drive™ comes with a 10-year warranty.

There is only one place to find out all the latest technology trends and innovations for the year to come and that is at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held every January in Las Vegas.

Not all of us were lucky enough to find our way to Vegas for this year’s CES, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the inside word on all of LG’s exciting products for the year to come. Our YouTube channel is host to a number of videos that introduce many of the great products on display.

The best place to start would be with this introductory video for CES 2011.

Skott Ahn, President and Chief Technology Officer of LG, sets the theme of this year’s products by saying, “For LG, 2011 is all about smart products. We have Smart TVs, Smart mobiles and Smart appliances”.
With sound bytes from George Mead, Marketing Manager, Home Entertainment LG UK and Paul Trueman, Marketing Director, LG UK, the video offers a great introduction to why 2011 is going to be Smart for LG.

Last year’s CES was dominated by 3D, as a host of 3D TVs were launched to the public. CES 2011 doesn’t look like it will be anything different with a wide range of 3D products already unveiled.

Excitingly one of the 3D products LG have on display at their booth is a glasses free 3D display for use in mobile devices. At 4.3 inches, this glasses free 3D display sets the pace for mobile 3D displays and cements LG as a forward thinking and innovative manufacturer.

Comprising a WVGA touchscreen and 480×800 pixel resolution, the 4.3 inch 3D display offers the optimum screen size for watching 3D on a mobile device. Ideal for watching videos or playing games without the risk of eye strain from the immersive 3D technology that provides bright, flicker-free images.

Making 3D glasses a thing of the past, LG’s display uses an applied parallax barrier technology, which delivers a series of light-blocking slits attached to the front of the LCD panel. The slits ensure that the left and right eyes see different images, creating an illusion of depth and a convincing 3D effect.

Developed in partnership with LG Display, LG have also drastically reduced crosstalk. The new display has straighter, more upright barriers that are very precisely aligned to the LCD panel. This technological advance not only means smoother, brighter, crosstalk-free images, but also a much wider viewing angle than on previous parallax displays.

Yesterday LG streamed their Press Conference at CES 2011 where they talked through the theme of the conference before introducing some exciting new products.

One of these products that got tongues wagging worldwide was the LG Optimus Black – a new Android running Smartphone lined up for a release in the first half of this year.

The LG Optimus Black is notable for several reasons, but the first thing to catch the eye is its thickness, or more specifically its lack of thickness. Measuring in at a super slim 9.22mm deep, the Optimus Black is the world’s slimmest smartphone.

The Optimus Black also packs a mighty punch, as it brings a 4-inch NOVA display to the mobile market for the first time, specifically designed to be the brightest, clearest and most readable among mobile device screens with 700 nits of brightness for optimal visibility.

Other advantages of the NOVA display aside from greater luminosity include a 50% reduction on power consumption when used indoors in comparison to a standard LCD display. The NOVA display even has AMOLED beaten, as AMOLED uses twice as much power to display a full white screen, the most frequently used colour scheme for web browsing. When you factor in a 1500 mAh battery, the LG Optimus Black will have enough power to get you through the day.

The Optimus Black is certainly a visually arresting handset, with enough sleek lines and smooth edges to get tongues hanging out. Taking a nod from LG’s Home Entertainment department’s invisible speakers on TVs, the Optimus Black has an Invisible Receiver hidden behind the edges of the phone ensuring a flush and attractive finish. Combine this with a weight of 109g and you have a truly enviable handset.

But looks alone do not make a good handset. The Optimus Black is packed full of features to help make users lives easier via the Optimus UI 2.0. This LG exclusive UI lets users access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with a single tap of the finger. The Gesture UI offers more intuitive commands, including lifting, shaking and tapping for taking calls, entering camera mode or enjoying music. The LG Optimus Black also introduces the world’s first Wi-Fi Direct™ for quick and high quality data transfer between mobile devices and adopts the world’s first 2MP front-facing camera.

All LG Optimus Black features are available on the Android 2.2 Froyo platform, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade capability. The Android 2.3 upgrade combined with the 2MP front-facing camera means that high quality video calls are possible.

The LG Optimus Black will be released globally in the first half of 2011.

Update: 7 July, 2011

Paul Trueman, Marketing Director, LG UK talks about the Optimus Black at CES 2011

LG are raising the bar in wireless connectivity at CES today with the first ever demonstration of Wi-Fi Direct™.

Wi-Fi Direct™ allows for a quicker and easier way to share content, videos and applications to Wi-Fi enabled smartphones without the need for traditional hot spots. Wi-Fi Direct™ will be demonstrated on the new LG Optimus Black handset, giving CES attendees a sneak peek at just how quick and easy it is to share content.
The demonstration will also show LG’s integration of DLNA as handset content will be projected onto TV and PC screens located throughout the booth.

Furthermore Wi-Fi Direct™ will make it easier for consumers who use their smartphone as a camera, appointment book, gaming device or music player, to sync their content to their PC, friends or even send photos to a printer without the need for wires or conventional Wi-Fi hotspots.

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LG have unveiled their latest cinema 3D TV designed specially to be free of flicker whilst maintaining the highest quality 3D picture possible.

The LW6500’s outstanding picture quality begins with LG’s proprietary Film-type Patterned Retarder panel, FPR for short. This panel optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eyes before being filtered through specially designed glasses to give viewers a great crisp image. Because these glasses use LG’s Cinema 3DTM technology, they do not require shutters in the glasses that can be the cause of flicker. This innovation earned LG a ‘Flicker Free’ certificate from Intertek and TUV, two of the most respected inspection and certification bodies in the world, making it the first 3DTV to receive this designation.

For consumers this means a 3D viewing experience that is much less likely to result in eye fatigue, whilst they also weigh in at just 16grams due to a lack of any electrical components meaning they never need charging and are much lower in cost. This also means that the screen does not need to be viewed from an optimal angle, making it the perfect 3D experience to enjoy with family and friends.

Another great piece of technology used by the LW6500 is 3D Light Boost, which is a thin film covering the screen that ensures 3D images are shown at maximum brightness. This all comes alongside LG’s Smart TV technology including access to LG Apps and a range of premium content via BBA iPlayer, and YouTube amongst others.

The LW6500 will be available to selected markets shortly after its introduction at CES.

Our 3D family has just got bigger as LG launched the extended range of 3D TVs for 2011 at CES 2011! This includes the world’s first LED Cinema 3D TV range available to consumers. The range also includes new active 3D plasma and Full LED NANO screens, making 40% of the 2011 TV range 3D ready, whilst continuing our commitment to offering the widest range of 3D products available.

Cinema 3D, or passive 3D, offers a great home cinema experience ideal for shared viewing with family and friends. The new LED range comprises 3 models, the LW550T, LW450U and the LW650T ranging between 32” and 55” and a wide variety of features, including Smart TV, bringing the best internet content to your TV screen. LG remain the only manufacturer on the market offering consumers both active and cinema 3D, reflecting our commitment to bringing consumers the broadest choice as Sky’s first choice for 3D TV.

Another two screens were launched at CES, the LW770T and the LW950T, both of which are 3D Ready Full LED NANO screens following on from our initial launch of NANO technology at IFA 2010. NANO Technology offers consumers a combination of ultra-slim depth and sleek bezel design with unrivalled picture quality by using micro pixel local dimming technology, creating a TV stunning in both picture quality and design.

LG also revealed a host of new Active 3D plasma screens, with new models including PW450T, PZ250T, PZ550T, PZ570T and PZ950T. LG’s 3D plasma screens are available in 42 – 60” with fantastic features including THX 3D Certification, making them perfect for sports and movies.

We loved the LG 84” Ultra High Definition Display on show at CES this year. It has 4x the resolution of normal HD, is supported by Next Generation LCD Technology and was hooked up to our CES award winning HB994PK Blu-ray cinema system. The Blu-ray system, which was officially launched at the end of last year, works wirelessly so that you can stream content from external hard drives. It also has an ‘invisible’ centre speaker, supports YouTube access and has a Mood Lighting system (“woooo” I hear you say)!

Blu-ray = HD DVD playing capacity.

We blogged loads about LG’s amazing TVs at CES this year, and there seem to have been loads of buzz about them among all the other journalists and fans that visited the show too – it’s been really exciting! However, we mustn’t forget to mention the other great LG innovations that were on show as well, and over the next couple of days we will be adding to what we saw…

LG’s main innovations are in 3 sectors: Mobile devices, Home Appliances and Home Entertainment products. But LG also have a fantastic digital display department and are constantly doing research on how to get the very best screen quality – whether that be for their new TVs or for the vast array of Monitors and Digital Frames that they create.

Also on show at CES were a sleek selection of LG Digital Frames that allow you to display all your digital photos and movies in an ongoing slide show. The frames shown all had Bluetooth capability, meaning that any of your bluetooth enabled devices could beam content up to the frames without any need to insert a memory card or USB… Sweet! Lots of these are already on sale in the UK on the Highstreet and there will be more arriving later in the year.

When we arrived this morning for the LG press conference people were queuing all through the Venetian Hotel to get in! The room was literally bursting full of people, and many couldn’t get in, in fact it turned into a “one in, one out” scenario! There were camera men, global journalists and tech fanatics all desperate to hear about LG’s new launches. We really felt the energy behind LG’s innovations and ever growing success stories – it felt great to be a part of it and we’re really excited about what this must mean for LG in 2010.

There is no doubt that the new LG products are pushing boundaries and are so exciting that everyone wants a piece of it! LG announced that they are to launch 70 TVs this year – and that’s JUST TVs!!! Not to mention the other LG products in the pipeline…Just look at the photos to see what we mean!

Today we got to see for the first time the new family of Infinia premium viewing TVs. This range includes Full LED Slim TVs and accessories. The Full LED Slim TVs work with “detailed local dimming of up to 240 addressable segments, resulting in an HDTV that provides deeper black levels and uniform picture quality – this typically can not be achieved on an ultra-thin set.” (This basically means far better contrast between dark and light.) Aside from OLED, these puppies really are the crème de la crème of TV viewing for the year ahead:

All have wireless Internet connectivity

All are HDTVs and will allow HD content on whichever platform suits the viewer: Freeview HD, Freesat, Satellite or cable plus Sky’s new 3D service

The majority is single layer – which means no external plastic frame/bezel

All have a slim design, seamless connectivity and limitless content options

The Full LED 9 series are a super thin 2.3cm/0.92″ depth (see pictures!!)

The Infinia range will be available from April 2010 and also includes other premium LED and Plasma models

Woop Woop!!

It can sound a bit dubious when big companies pledge to “constantly deliver amazing experiences”…and on a blog that is written for LG, you may raise an eyebrow upon the claim. However, we truly believe that this is what LG aims to do. LG aims to please, or deliver an excellent experience at whatever point you encounter them or their products. Whether this is through events such as their F1 sponsorship, F1 Rocks (the music show), or the amazing new LG Arena … or, of course, through the adventurous products that LG launches.

Today lived up to that promise… while we wait in anticipation for more news on LG’s new range of TVs, the much anticipated 3D TV, new launches in the Home Appliance category and perhaps a rumoured watch phone 2, LG took us for a Life’s Good experience that I certainly won’t forget.

We headed to the sand dunes that lie on the outskirts of Las Vegas for an afternoon of Dune Buggying, and boy, was Life Good doing that!! (I’ve been in America a day and I am starting to sound like an American)…. Controlling the oversteer, shimmying through sand dunes and getting air at the top of 15ft sand mounds was about as good as it gets. All the while looking back towards the hyper-reality that is Vegas. (Thanks LG)

It’s easy to have some form of existential crisis while out here – is everything real or not real??.. Talking of hyper reality, if anyone has seen the incredible Avatar film at a 3D cinema, then you won’t be disappointed to hear, that you could have the same 3D viewing experience courtesy of LG sometime this year. Sky+ should be launching their 3D channel potentially in time to show Avatar as one of their first 3D films, and lets hope the LG 3D TV will launch in time for this too. Get surround sound with that and you won’t need to go to the cinema ever again… or perhaps even Vegas…actually no, let’s not take it too far!

In the meantime, don’t forget you can get exclusive Avatar content on the HD cinema viewing style screen on the new LG Chocolate BL140 phone. I’ve seen it and it truly does deliver wicked viewing quality.

More news to follow…..

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4953" title="3D Avatar to be in your lounge..

Merry Christmas Everybody!

It’s been a brilliant 2009 for LG and it seems an apt time to look back at some of the highlights from this year!

We started the year on a high, winning the CES Innovations Award for the LH9500 LCD HDTV.

In February, we welcomed Marc from Coolest Gadgets to be our man on the scene covering MWC in Barcelona. It was the official launch of the Arena KM900, our first phone to include LG’s 3D S-Class user interface (UI) and we got to see a live video call on the LG GD910 watch phone to none other than Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer.

In March, we were ecstatic to be awarded 2 awards at the 15th annual Mobile News Awards for Best Manufacturer and Most Innovative Product. There were more awards to follow as we won 4 EISA Awards in August, including the Green Mobile Phone Award for the Arena KM900.

In April-May, we showcased a range of products at Grand Designs Live, Ideal Home Show and The Gadget Show, before launching three new TVs in September at IFA 2009 in Berlin. These TVs feature LG’s Seamless design and are supported by our current TV advert which you can watch here or on our YouTube channel at any time.

Also in September, LG made its fifth appearance at London Fashion Week as its official consumer electronics provider. We enlisted the help of Fashion blogger Miggy, who documented the shows with the latest phone in our Black Label Series, the Chocolate BL40, which was launched at a very stylish event at the Design Museum.

It’s been a busy few months towards the end of the year, with blogger events and launches galore. We had an amazing time at London Freeze and the Avatar World Premiere, and a lovely time at Adam Street discussing the latest handsets, including the Pop GD510, GD910 watch phone, GW520, GM750 Windows Phone, Chocolate BL20 and eagerly awaited GW620, LG’s first Android Phone.

We are excited to reveal our plans for next year, including more from the Android Phone and 3DTV, but have to remain tight-lipped for the timebeing I’m afraid!

In the meantime, we will be enjoying the festive period and probably indulging in one too many mince pies and Quality Streets! Check out this cool yuletide Twitter visualiser to see what others are saying about Christmas this year.

Thanks for all of your continued support and feedback this year and we look forward to seeing you in 2010.
