A Royal Wedding in a digital age

April 28th, 2011 by Dave@LGUK

Tomorrow is the big day, the day that has the world rapt – the Royal Wedding of William and Kate. You would quite literally have had to live under a rock for this one to pass you by, with coverage on TV, in the papers, commemorative merchandise galore and more flags adorning the streets than during the World Cup! But this is the 21st century, and undoubtedly the first Royal Wedding in the digital age – so here are a few more ways to follow the big day with the digital age.

Twitter:

The official hashtag adopted for the wedding is #rw2011 according to @ClarenceHouse, the Royal residence of Princes Charles, William and Harry.

Youtube:

You can watch coverage on YouTube with live commentary starting from 10am GST tomorrow. But who am I to invite you? Receive the official invite from The Royal Household below…

Google Maps:

Can’t make it to London yourself? Then fear not, for you can view the Royal Wedding route in 3D courtesy of Google Maps here

Android Apps:

There is no shortage of apps on the Android Marketplace made especially for the big day. However seeing as a large majority of them are countdowns for the wedding it seems a waste of time to post those. So here are a few of our favourites:

The Royal Wedding Album

Free to download, The Royal Wedding Album offers something a little different. Register at their website and then on the day you can upload your own pictures of you, your family and friends celebrating the day in your own way and contribute to an alternative memory of the day.

Royal Wedding, Insider

Courtesy of the BBC, the Royal Wedding, Insider promises insider access to breaking news and exclusive videos amongst others. Considering it’s free and considering the BBC’s coverage of the day and relationship with the Royal Family this looks like it could be a winner.

London Tube Status

With a lot of tourists coming into London for the wedding we recommend a decent tube app to find your way around the city so you don’t get on the wrong tube and end up in Camberwell! London Tube Status is our favourite at the blog, with any disruptions listed as well as live departure times.
We appreciate the Royal Wedding may not be everyone’s cup of tea, in which case we still recommend this app – just avoid Parliament Square!
