LG Optimus 3D – the World’s First Full 3D Smartphone

February 14th, 2011 by LG Blog UKLG Blog UK

Two weeks ago, we announced on the Blog that LG were going to release the world’s first 3D smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2011. Well MWC is underway in Barcelona and we are excited that we have detailed information for this eagerly-awaited handset to share with you all.

Now officially named the LG Optimus 3D, LG’s first 3D phone is equipped with a dual 5MP lens camera which allows you to capture 3D images and record 3D video on the go, whilst glasses are not necessary to view 3D content.  Not only can you shoot and view in 3D with the Optimus 3D, but you can share content anytime, anywhere via an HDMI 1.4 connection on 3D TVs and monitors as well as upload and stream on YouTube’s 3D channel (youtube.com/3D), all directly from your phone. To make the 3D experience even fuller and immersive, there is also a bright 4.3-inch WVGA screen which is great for viewing 3D (and 2D) content and users can also navigate through the phone’s 3D interface with a unique 3D Hot Key, which presents five 3D-dedicated UIs including Gallery, Camera, Games & Apps, YouTube 3D and 3D Guide.

Besides being the first full 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D is so exciting due to its superior speed and power. The Optimus 3D uses LG’s unique ‘Tri-Dual’ technology, utilising dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory, meaning unlike other dual-core smart phones, the LG Optimus 3D also offers significant performance benefits as a result of the faster transfer of data between the dual-core and dual-memory. This means you can browse web pages, multitask between programs, play games at a higher frame rate and enjoy movies more smoothly than ever before. As Dr. Jong-seok Park said ‘We’ve incorporated every feature for the power user and we think they’ll be pleased with what they see.’

Key Specifications:

  • 1GHz Dual-Core Dual-Channel processor (Texas Instruments OMAP4)
  • 4.3-inch 3D WVGA screen
  • 8GB memory and 4Gb LP DDR2
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 5MP dual-lens camera
  • 2D: 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 recording and playback
  • 3D: 720p H.264 SEI recording and playback
  • HSPA+, DLNA/HDMI 1.4
  • H.264, H.263, DivX, MKV, WMV-9, ASF, AVI, 3GP, MP4

If you are as excited as us about the Optimus 3D, then you should know that it will be available in Q2. It will initially be released with Android 2.2 Froyo and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We will bring you the upgrade schedule for the UK when it is available in due course.

I’m trying to find what’s the resolution of 3D still pictures. Is it 3:2, 4:3, 16:9? All of the above? I need only the 3D stills, not video. Thanks in advance!

Is the LG Optimus 3D still going to be exclusive to Carphone Warehouse?

Can’t wait, I’ve been wanting to do 3D blogging for some time now as 2D is very restrictive and it’s days are clearly limited, but the price of current technology is prohibitive, LG clearly has a head start if they release the LG Optimus 3D ahead of the competition.

It’s a beauty i assure you Gordon. Looks like a late May/early June release so not too much longer to wait :)

Looks Like LG is going to have a worlds first with the LG Optimus 3D, Android, dual core, glasses free 3D and HDMI output with HD video recording all this and it even records in 3D HD. Really need to see this miracle of technology with my own 2 eyes…

    Hi King,
we are very excited to get our hands on this handset for a proper play with it. Unfortunately we don’t have a time frame on this currently – but rest assured we will do a full review and write up, including 3D footage, when we receive one. If you have a 3D TV or Monitor you may be interested to have a look at YouTube’s 3D channel that you will be able to stream/upload your 3D content to and from

Wow! LG really seem to be up there with the big boys in terms of latest technology now! Loving this new 3D addition.

sounds like LG’s got some pretty high specs in this phone, and 3D defi adds an edge to it

  • King

I got a look at this phone at MWC – the 3D screen is impressive, especially when you consider the fact that you don’t need special glasses. When will you be posting some footage from the 3D video camera?

  • LGBlogUK

Being able to record 3D on the go is a massive bonus indeed. There’s also a dedicated YouTube 3D channel that you can stream videos from as well as uploading your own 3D content! BOOM! :)

  • LIV

This is a geniunly surprising and cool invention from LG – 3D gaming on the go is awesome and I really want to see what my home videos will be like in 3D. BOOM is all I can say!

  • TheBook

I saw it in ShortList today. It is really cool and can’t wait to have it in my hands! :)

  • Vik

I used to have an LG myself, but unfortunately it was stolen. What a shame! It was very reliable and thin then.

  • LGBlogUK

Unfortunately we have not received a Optimus 3D yet and none of the specifications reference the interaxial distance unfortunately. When we receive a handset we’ll be sure to let you know
