Secure your Android handset

Last year the BBC mislaid 65 mobile phones, worth a combined £12,913. With the current boom in smartphones you can be assured that some of those were linked to the owners’ email giving whoever chanced upon the handsets an insider view on goings on at the BBC. This is probably why the storylines for Eastenders are such poorly kept secrets.

Thankfully Android phone users have a way to secure their phones using the inbuilt lock to stop anyone accessing any personal details on your phone. To set up your own security on your phone simply go into Settings, then Security, then Require Pattern to add your own unique pattern. You will be presented with the grid below – simply trace your finger over the screen joining consecutive dots in a unique pattern moving horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Once this is completed every time your phone is unlocked you will be requested to enter your pass pattern to access your phone!

However, for those of you out there with particularly sensitive material on their phone, military secrets or nude photos of David Cameron, there is an even more extreme measure of security coming soon. Blue Planet Apps are working on a Biometric security app for Android phones called BioLock. The app will offer a 3 stage security procedure:

  1. a simple pin number
  2. The iris scan mode uses the camera on your phone to recognise your eye.
  3. The third and final step is a facial recognition mode. This is programmed to recognise the difference between your actual face and someone holding up a photo of you. The facial recognition software will also be able to account for facial variables like beards and moustaches.

The BioLock app is lined up for release within two weeks!
