LG Optimus phone – users guide…

Optimus Prime was my favourite Transformer. He was a good guy, but wasn’t afraid to use his loud and intimidating Optimus Prime voice to get people to do what he wanted. If that failed he just used the fact he was a giant robot and fought them, and from what I remember he didn’t lose very often.

I mention this because the new LG phone is called the Optimus, due to it being an Android phone. It’s clearly aiming to pick up where the GW620 left off, bringing a smartphone to the masses that you won’t have to pay through the teeth for, but will still do everything that you would want a smartphone to do.

Specifications:

• Long-lasting 1500mAh battery
• Android 1.6 OS
• 3.5mm headphone jack
• Bluetooth 2.1 capability
• Assisted GPS
• 32GB of expandable microSD memory
• Automatic account synchronisation with all Google mobile services
• DivX and Xvid video compatibility
• 4 customisable home screen themes

With the imminent release of the Optimus phone LG have made a series of tutorial videos showing you how to do a wide range of things with your phone. These range from the practical like inserting your simcard and battery correctly, through to highlighting some of the cool features that the GT540 is capable of like how to set up your social networking sites and Google talk instant messaging service.

This first video shows you how to set up your contacts list, including attaching a photo to the profile.

This video shows you how to set up your social networking sites on the Optimus phone using LG’s own social media widget.

  • Well I hope the soon to be release new LG Optimus One has a capacitive screen otherwise I'm just gonna buy from there rival Samsung...
  • No news on the specs of the Optimus One yet, but will have something live the second i know more

The Lg Optimus looks like a great phone and I also hope it gets the 2.2 Android update very soon because 3.00 is coming , making this phone (1.6) outdated already! HTC have already announced 2.2 updates on all their phones released for 2010; Sony have also announced 2.1 and other update too! LG announces nothing!! If LG can't be bothered to support their phones, their will lose out on customers/marketshare. What is the point of buying an LG phone knowing that the company are not going to even give their customers updates, but other companies are updating theirs. Im willing to take my money and wait for the new Sony Ericsson X8 (almost same specs as LG Optimus, but with Android 2.1, a capacitive screen and video recording of 30fps) or get HTC with 2.2! LG you've got competition!
  • The Optimus is very new to the market, so an upgrade is certainly feasible in the future. It was released with 1.6 as it is an entry level smartphone, as the price indicates.

I was wondering if it was possible to send music via bluetooth to other peoples phones. If it is - how! I know how to share other media files but not music...

I do wish to buy the LG Optimus smartphone as the features are amazing - but I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade to Android 2.2 operating system on this smartphone -- is there?
  • There is no way to upgrade the OS on the Optimus. There is potential for a future upgrade, but the phone is so new to be released there is no official word on this yet

I'm thinking of buying this phone, but I want to know what Android os will it be upgraded to, and will it include flash? Also, will I be able to download the apps to the Micro SD card?
  • lgblog
Both Flash and the ability to save apps to a microSD are down to having the latest version of Android - 2.2. Currently the Optimus runs with 1.6, 2 versions behind 2.2. As the Optimus is so new to the market it is impossible to tell if their will be an upgrade for a few months i imagine

    Thanks very much LGblog!

What I don't get is, if you say that it is impossible to tell if there will be an upgrade for the Optimus, then why the TV add states "Google Goggles available with "free upgrade" from August 2010. I and other potential customers would assume that there will be or there is an upgrade together with Google Goggles from August - can you please clarify on this?

If on ther other hand, there will be no upgrades for the time being or none at all, why did LG make this statement in the UK ad?

I think you have a great phone that will attract a lot potential customers in this market, and not everyone can afford an Iphone or the new Samsung S, which costs hundreds of pounds, but if it the Optimus can not be upgraded, it will be just like the LG GW620 - not worth buying!!!

I really want to a buy this phone which will last me a long time, but I can't afford to waste money only to find out the Optimus has an out-dated Android OS which can't be updated and lasts only for a few months!
  • lgblog
Google Goggles is available on 1.6 upwards, which obviously covers the Optimus. By upgrade it must mean that receiving Google Goggles as an upgrade will happen as an auto upgrade once the app has been released.

    Thanks very much LGblog!
  • PhoneGirl
By the way, I've seen the adverts for this phone and it mentions that "Google Goggles available with free upgrade from August 2010" (UK TV Ad)!
  • lgblog
indeed this is true! the Google goggles app is available for download now!
  • tuga
LG write to me that Optimus will have a android 2.1 upgrade in late august..but i hope will be a froyo update this cpu is capable of it
  • DBNEmesis
The lack of flash is the only thing that stops me loving this phone.
  • lgblog
Fingers crossed it gets the Android 2.2 update, as then it will be Flash 10.1 compatible!!
  • Neostar
I wonder how fast is the processor on this phone as I can't find any information on it? Also how good is the video playback of DivX and XviD files?
  • TheLostSwede
Well, the screen is a tad on the small side, making it hard to type on.
Otherwise I'm quite happy with it and fingers crossed that update to a newer version of android will come true. It's something LG can do to get one up on Samsung at least ;-)
  • Neostar
I want this phone BUT no android 2.1 or 2.2 means i'm gonna pass :(
  • sean
Im choosing betwen this iphone and x10 mini. I have heard that the mini Will get 2.2.
  • ch
Is there any plan for an update to OS 2.1 or 2.2??
  • lgblog
It's a bit soon to consider upgades on the Optimus, which is a brand new phone for LG. However there may be scope for this in the future. We will certainly share the news the second we hear more on this...
