LG – Life’s Green
February 3rd, 2010 by Dave@LGUK
In the first six months of 2009 LG was proud to announce that it had successfully reduced 2.1 million tons of greenhouse emissions through improved efficiency and manufacturing processes. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of planting 700 million pine trees to offset carbon emissions! This news came in the wake of LG’s announcement that it intends to reduce annual emissions by 15% by the year 2012 through improved energy efficiency in it‘s products.
LG have taken further steps on their eco-promise by investing $168 million in refitting a decommissioned factory that once made plasma screens into a factory to make solar panels. The plant will boast two solar fabrication lines, both producing crystalline silicon solar cells and modules with each line having a production capacity of 120 megawatts. The first line will be opening this quarter with the second planned for the first quarter of next year.
LG Electronics currently operate a solar cell business team which was transferred from its sister company LG Chem Ltd. in June 2008 in an attempt to expand its business into the solar energy sector as a new growth engine.
The LG GD510 POP phone is just one of the many products LG have designed eco-consciously to save energy and protect the environment. It comes available with a built in solar-cell battery cover, designed to provide emergency charge when you are running low on battery and need that extra little charge to get you through the rest of the day.
