LG and Sky shape the future of TV with a spectacular 3D event
February 2nd, 2010 by Dave@LGUK
Yesterday was a big day in the future of television as Sky and LG broadcast the world’s first 3D Premier League football match exclusively at 9 pubs across the UK and Ireland. The specially selected pubs were kitted out with a 47-inch LG LD920 3DTV allowing the lucky viewers to immerse themselves in the Premier League showdown between Arsenal and Manchester United.
The turnout was tremendous, with a real palpable sense of excitement in the air as people of all ages donned their passive technology 3D glasses in anticipation. Prior to the match Sky screened a trailer highlighting their commitment to 3D as golf, boxing and rugby were all previewed in 3D for the watching crowd. The response upon kick off was electric, with people enjoying the added depth that this new technology offers, making them feel like they really were sat on the front row at the Emirates stadium.

After the match we caught up with some of the spectators for their views. One Manchester United fan commented “you feel like you’re there, a lot of the stadium for example, looked wonderful” going on to say “if someone hit the bar, you felt it!”. Others were quick to comment on how immersive 3DTV was compared to the older 3D films, with another spectator saying “it really felt immersive, rather than in films where things are just coming at you”.
LG’s 47-inch LD920 will be the first 3DTV to be released in the UK with a planned release date in April in time for Sky’s own dedicated 3D channel which will be released later in 2010.
