Life’s Good in 3D: LG’s 3D range uncovered.
January 8th, 2010 by Dave@LGUKLG today unveiled it’s new series of incredible 3D TVs and accessories:
- A 47 ” LED 3D HD TV
- A 55″ LCD HD 3D TV with 3D Camera and Film sharing capabilities
- A 55″ LCD HD Full LED slim TV
- A 60″ 3D Plasma TV
- A 72″ LCD HD Full LED slim TV
- A LG 3D Projector for screens appox 300″
- A 3D enabled Blu-ray player
Here’s a breakdown of what all this means:
The world’s first camera 3D TV from LG will allow people to upload images from the world’s first ever 3D camera. This is compatible with an MPO file, which will be the file format for all 3D cameras. You can record your life, your mates and your family in 3D and then share it all on this luscious 55″ screen (both film & stills).
The 3D camera enabled TV works with what is called “Passive 3D” technology. This means the cool looking glasses (see pic), have 2 different lenses; one for the left eye and one for the right, and are polarised. There are two different images overlaid over each other to achieve the 3D effect. The glasses for passive technology are not expensive so this will lower the overall price compared to “Active 3D technology”.
The 55″ Full LED Slim TV works with Active 3D technology. This means that the glasses (see pic), interact with an infrared node on the TV, and shutters in the lense open and close in order to create a 3D effect. This style of 3D is better for live broadcasts such as sports or music concerts and some argue is the better of the two as regards to picture quality, but will be more pricey.
The plasma 3D TV has increased depth due to the black levels inherant within plasma. This basically means that you achieve correct black level – resulting in the best contrast ratio (DLP) and best colour reproduction (LCD).
This technology is highly exciting!!
LG’s first 3D set to be launching in the UK will be the 47″ LED TV this coming April. The LD360 will be compatible with Sky 3D TV Services which means that when Sky’s new 3D channel launches in 2010, families will be able to watch movies, entertainment and sport with the exciting extra dimension.
A whole range of 3D films will be coming out this year, including a film called ‘Street Dance 3D’ which includes ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winners; The dance group Diversity and the break dancer George Simpson. I watched a preview in 3D, and it was fantastic. Even if you don’t like dance, it is a great film to demonstrate the 3D experience – it felt like George Simpson was about to kick me whilst doing the windmill!!
