Views from Hubble’s Ultra Deep Field in 3D!

August 13th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

While trying to find more information on the meteor shower I was promised last night but didn't see, I came across this gorgeous video on YouTube today. In the words of Tony Darnell, who scripted the narration and shared it with the world: I've recently discovered an animation that was rendered using the measured redshift of all 10,000 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. I've written a short script that leads you through a quick history of both deep field images and this video ends with a fly-through of the Ultra Deep Field. Every galaxy in the image is in its...

Forgetful Workmen Saved by RFID

August 11th, 2009 by agenda21

Now this is clever - Dewalt, the power tool powerhouse, have teamed up with Ford to develop Tool Link, an RFID enabled toolbox. Here's how it works - you're supplied with RFID tags, which you attach to your tools. When you get back in your van after the end of a busy day grafting, the Ford's on board computer checks that all the registered kit is on board. If you're missing anything, the system alerts the driver immediately via the on screen display. $1,120 might seem a little steep for such a kit, but when you think that $1,000 is the cost...

British costcutters say no to restaurants but yes to new mobiles!

August 10th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Last week the BBC announced the results of an Ofcom review which suggests that we Brits are more willing to tighten the purse strings on our holidays and meals out than on spending on communication technology! The watchdog's annual report says spending on mobiles, the internet and TV is regarded as a higher priority than almost anything except food. In a poll of 862 people, over 40% said they would save on holidays and eating out and 19% chose spending on mobiles. Interesting - and good for us! But I wonder what the motivation is, perhaps it's the conveniences our technology affords us;...

No Fishes Were Harmed!

August 10th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK

Titanas from Greek tech blog pestaola.gr sent us an inexplicably surreal yet charming video of his new LG Crystal GD-900 'sleeping with the fishes'. As Titanas points out on his blog, please don't try this yourself. As far as we can make out he's made a water-resistant skin for his handset which allows it to happily sit underwater. Read the original post (via Google Translate)...
