Space Colony Art from the 1970s
February 14th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
A couple of space colony summer studies were conducted at NASA Ames in the 1970s. Colonies housing about 10,000 people were designed. A number of artistic renderings of the concepts were made and you can see them on the official NASA site
Extraordinary to think these were the real deal, rather than flights of sci-fi fancy.

Happy Darwin Day!
February 12th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
Today, February 12 2009, is the 200th anniversary of the birth of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin.
According to the Darwin Day Celebration site there are 664 events taking place in 44 countries for Darwin Day 2009! There is also a nice optical illusion on Richard Wiseman's blog:
The picture below shows two monkeys. Set your computer monitor to maximum brightness and then stare at the centre of the picture for about 30 seconds without moving your eyes. Next, look to a white wall and blink a few times. The monkeys should suddenly transform into a perfect picture of Darwin!

Tuning In
February 10th, 2009 by Dave@LGUK
At first glance, harmonic mixing software Mixed In Key appears to be a tool for DJs, but a bit of exploration reveals a stunningly clever piece of software.
Using sophisticated algorithms, Mixed In Key analyses your music collection and marks each track with its respective musical key
The key can either be expressed traditionally ('G Major', 'D Minor' etc) or as a code based on the Camelot Wheel, which requires no musical knowledge.
Once you have flagged the tracks in your music collection with their keys, you can put together groups of songs that are perfectly in tune with each other, an exercise...
