We know you like big TVs. Otherwise you wouldn’t be in here.

But there’s big (like our 50 inch PS8000) and then there’s BIG, like this 50 ton expanding screen currently being used for U2’s 360º tour. With a screen area of over 3,800 sq feet, made up of 500,000 pixels, and expanding, contracting, and changing shape in all directions to enhance the gig experience. Or as put by creator Chuck Hoberman

“The Expanding Video Screen fuses technology, design and architecture. It’s a video display that becomes something else, a living theatrical event. This project has been a true feat of engineering, accomplished by a fantastic team of architects, engineers and artists.

I wonder how Gears of War 2 might look on that?

The Digital Switchover Myths: Research Results
Tuesday, 30 Jun 2009

LG research reveals the need for consumer education re the Digital Switchover

• 87% of West Country consumers claim to know what the Digital Switchover is, yet 50 per cent subscribe to the major myths
• 30% of people claim they don’t know how to judge if a TV is ‘digital ready’
• 45% of people want to receive high definition programming as part of their digital package if it doesn’t cost more
• ‘Silver 60s’ claim to be the most educated about the Digital Switchover and the most prepared

Berkshire, 30 June, 2009 – New research launched today by LG, reveals that 87% of consumers in the West Country believe that they know what the Digital Switchover is, yet 50% still subscribe to the three most common myths concerning the change from analogue to digital broadcasts – including having to upgrade their home entertainment equipment, paying more for programming, and losing channels.

Exeter, parts of Devon, Somerset and Dorset started to switchover from 6 May, while the remainder of the region will experience the transition between 1 July and the middle of August 2009. Although the majority of consumers are convinced they are prepared for the switchover, 45% are unaware of when the switchover is happening. With this impending change, one in three consumers is still unaware if their TVs are capable of receiving a digital feed. However, 45% are keen to experience the benefits of high definition digital TV packages, as long as they don’t have to pay more for the service.

George Mead, marketing manager, LG Electronics digital display says, “It is interesting to note that The Digital TV Group, itself, released results recently, suggesting that 90% of residents in the West Country are ready for the impending Digital Switchover and whilst this certainly mirrors parts of our findings, our research delves deeper to uncover a disconnect between this high level of understanding and reality.”

Interestingly, the research indicates that the “Silver 60’s” segment of consumers – aged between 60 and 70 – is the most confident about its preparation and education about the Digital Switchover. 90% of these respondents claim to have made appropriate provisions for the switchover, however, 62% still subscribe to the common myths.

LG will be touring through the West Country in our LG Xperience trailer. It will be visiting new and established LG retailers to educate staff and consumers about the brand’s product developments – including the LF7700, subscription-free HD TVs with in-built Freesat, high definition designer small screens, 200Hz LCD sets, and the switchover – to answer any questions that inhabitants of the various regions may have, as well as to provide advice on the most appropriate TV purchases, depending on individual needs. You can see the tour dates at the bottom of this post.

Other findings to come out of the LG study include:

REGION

Bristol
• Least prepared for the Digital Switchover – 74 per cent
Cornwall
• Respondents had the highest awareness of the Digital Switchover – 97 per cent
Devon
• 81 per cent of respondents from Devon know when the switchover is happening
Dorset
• Dorset and Wiltshire are the most price sensitive regions as 58 per cent and 57 per cent respectively would adopt HD programming if it didn’t cost any more
Gloucestershire
• 34 per cent of respondents associated the switchover with having to upgrade their existing TV
Somerset
• Somerset is the area in the West Country that is most prepared for the switchover – 94 per cent
Wiltshire
• Only 31 per cent of respondents know when the switchover is happening
• Regionally, , Wiltshire is the least prepared for the switchover with its 75 per cent figure
• Dorset and Wiltshire are the most price sensitive regions as 58 per cent and 57 per cent respectively would adopt HD programming if it didn’t cost any more

AGE
• 60% of 60 year olds know when the switchover is happening in their town, while 47% of ‘under 30s’ are aware of when the switchover is happening in their town
• 60 year olds are the largest subscribers to common misconceptions about the switchover – 62%
• Under 30s are also the least educated about the switchover as 23% do not know what it is

SEX
• Men claim to be better informed than females about the switchover with 94% claiming that they know what it is. Females – 82%
• 50% of males would adopt HD programming if it was ‘cheap enough’
• 35% of females would be unable to determine whether or not a TV in-store is digital

LG’s Boogie Baby is on the loose!
Thursday, 25 Jun 2009

I have a feeling you’re going to be pleased with this exclusive preview because when we launched the LG Arena TV advert on the blog back in April we discovered that there were a fair few people who were fans of the scene stealing dancing baby. Well for those of you, like MEGAFLATHEAD, xx123RockOn123xx and oconnorthelegend who wanted an extended cut, LG have gone one better – especially for you, Boogie baby has his own video!

What more could you want to set you up for the weekend?

Boogie Baby will be unleashed upon the world next week, but until the weekend he’s exclusively ours, so enjoy!

Worldwide Photowalk
Wednesday, 24 Jun 2009

I recently became aware of the Worldwide Photowalk, it’s a brilliant idea – Photowalks are “a social photography event where photographers get together, usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town, to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers” they are free to take part in and open to anyone – although, for practicality all walks are limited to a maximum of 50 people per walk.

Photowalks

Q. How many cities and people participated in last year’s Photo Walk?
A. We had:
1. 8.324 photographers register for local walks
2. 47 Countries had participating cities
3. 44 States in the US had Photo Walks
4. We had a total of 236 cities worldwide
5. More than 1,017,125 photos were taken on walks that day

Next month an international challenge will be undertaken – with walks arranged all over the world for photographers to submit images for one massive grand prize. At the end of each walk, all participants can submit their favourite photo of the day, their walk leader then chooses an overall winner from the event and each of these go to a panel of judges as part of the Worldwide Photowalk 2009 competition.

There are currently walks planned all over the world – from Albania to Yugoslavia! – and they don’t only happen on July 18th (the date of the global competition walk) so if you’re into photography and fancy meeting some fellow enthuasists in your area check out the walks available. Happy snapping!

FreeSat’s awards double whammy!
Thursday, 18 Jun 2009

Today is a good day for me – earlier I got to share the good news on our LF7700 competition winner and now I get to congratulate someone else!

Last Friday Emma Scott, managing director of Freesat, took the top prize of the First Women Awards in the media category.

The awards, which were founded in 2004 by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Real Business magazine, celebrate the achievements of women who are pioneers in business across a variety of sectors including media, finance, business services and manufacturing.

Ms Scott, who beat strong competition from Financial Times and YouGov candidates, said:

It’s important to recognise the achievements of women in business everywhere. So to receive this prestigious award is a real honour
I couldn’t have won this award without the support of many great people during my career – and now thanks to our shareholders, the BBC and ITV and the fantastic team at Freesat who have worked incredibly hard to make the service such a brilliant success in only its first year.

Emma’s award came at the end of a week that saw Freesat win “Best New Brand or Business” at the Marketing Society Awards for Excellence. Congratulations guys!

We have a winner!
Thursday, 18 Jun 2009

I’m very pleased to be able to announce the winner of our LF7700 LCD TV competition – Simon from South London, who you can see posing with the lovely TV, which was delivered earlier this week!

img00526-20090616-1847

Simon is a stay-at-home dad… For both his and the TV’s sake I hope the kids are past the stickie fingers stage!

Massive congratulations to Simon on winning, looking forward to checking in with him in a few weeks to get his thoughts on the LF7700 and it’s FreeSat capabilities!

Thanks to everyone else who entered, sorry you can’t all be winners… But remember, there is still time to enter our Arena photography competition for your chance to win £250!
